Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Everything is totally different 

on the food landscape these days, but in the interests of 

the public, we are still venturing out there and enjoying the 

victuals provided by local eateries. 

The place: 5 West Pub — the year-round restaurant directly next 

to Wawa in North Cape May. It is also run by the same family behind 

Tisha’s on the Washington Street Mall. 

The server: Jen joined the 5 West Pub crew about two years ago. 

She loved Cape May and her parents always had a shore house, so she 

relocated from Pine Hill, NJ with her two boys. Jen has always a part 

of the restaurant business so 5 West Pub was the right calling. She 

told us how much she enjoys working in the friendly environment and 

meeting kind and generous diners every day. We also chatted about 

their to-go business — 5 West offers cocktails and six packs of beer 

to take home when you order. Jen told us how happy and surprised 

everyone has been with it and how much they’re all looking forward 

to summer. 

The vibe: It was great to pull up and see a full parking lot. Tables 

were nearly full for lunch and their open kitchen allows you to see a 

little behind-the-scenes action while you wait for your food. 5 West’s 

inviting atmosphere attracts locals all year and — from the looks of 

the dining room on a Thursday afternoon in March — it’s not stopping 

any time soon. 

The food: Kayla once again sat this one out — we really can’t get 

on the same page with lunch. While she enjoyed her peanut butter 

and jelly sandwich, Jack and Nicole ordered out. Jack enjoyed a chicken-cheesesteak 

wrap with some jalapeños and a side salad, while 

Nicole opted for the grilled chicken BLT and side salad. Proud of us for 

skipping the fries? Well, we also shared some meatballs topped with 

ricotta cheese and marinara sauce — very much worth it. 

The takeaway: 5 West Pub is open daily for lunch and dinner with 

indoor and outdoor dining on their patio available. Enjoy live music 

— weather permitting — on the patio Fridays and Saturdays. Bring 

the whole family, and if you can’t make it out, they offer takeout daily.


FEED OUR FRIENDS 

Exit Zero Filling Station delivered dinner to Cathy Smith for the most recent Feed Our Friends meal. Cathy recently lost her husband Bob, who spent most of 2020 in 

and out of hospital. Bob was known for sharing his knowledge as a Native American, volunteering and sharing crops from his garden. EZ staffer Melissa O’Donnell 

delivered butter chicken pot pie, a chopper salad, iced tea and iced coffee. This meal was sponsored by Mike and Eileen Dignen – thank you for your support!

Weekly Beard & Weight Watch: 

Getting this out of the way 

because it’s annoying and I hate 

talking about it, but I’m committed 

to sharing my progress or lack 

thereof with you guys for some absurd reason a 

team of Swiss psychiatrists would need decades 

to figure out. I dropped a pound to 236, which is 

fine, I guess. Better than gaining a pound, I suppose. 

I’m so thrilled. The beard has given way to 

a mustache, a sweet, sweet mustache, that I’m 

test driving before I use it in a commercial I’m 

filming next week. No, you probably won’t see 

it unless you’re in the central Jersey market. No, 

it will make me neither rich nor famous. Yes, it 

will provide me several more annoying stories 

with which to bore you to tears. 

Shmooshy Shmooshy Wooshy Wooshy 

Squishy Squishy Puppy Face of the Week: The 

little fella that patrols the grounds at Nauti 

Spirits. His name is Marshall, he’s a rat terrier-fox 

terrier mix and he’s among the cutest 

things on Earth. He also loves chasing me up 

and down the driveway when I’m dropping off 

magazines. Owner Brad Ransom says, “He’s a 

good boy.” And I believe him. 

I hope the people at Donut Connection 

and Cuttin’ Edge salon appreciate the lengths 

to which I went (feel like I’m using a lot of “to 

whichs”) to deliver their magazines last week. 

With the seemingly never-ending construction 

projects on Bayshore Road cutting them off 

from 100% of their potential customers, I had to 

walk almost 1/16th of a mile to deliver their bundles... 

1/16TH OF A MILE! I guess it’s true what 

they say. Journalists really are superheroes. 

Apology of the Week: To my man Dan at 

Donut Connection. My delivery routine always 

included a stop at the drive-thru, where I’d drop 

off magazines and order a couple of large decafs, 

and Dan would invariably ply me with a free 

pastry or two. However, I got Cathrine a new 

K-pod coffee machine for Christmas and, well, 

I fulfill all my coffee needs at home now. (Why 

does that sentence sound so dirty?) Anyway, it’s 

not you, it’s me. And I’ll be back the minute that 

machine breaks down. 

Cathrine asked me to give Tish Roussos a 

hug last week, so I did. The ass grab was from 

me. And HUGE props to Tish for working the 

day after her birthday — pretty impressive for 

someone of her advancing age. And don’t worry, 

I won’t tell anyone I saw you going into Dollar 

General in your pajamas. 

I was driving around the other day thinking 

about how cool racism is, then I saw this 

bumper sticker that said RACISM IS WRONG. 

Totally changed my mind. 

If you are feeling 100% not depressed and in 

good mental health, watch five minutes of any 

episode of the current season of Grey’s Anatomy

I was a little worried about my 

friends at Evolution Salon & Spa; 

they were closed last Thursday 

during delivery. But turns out it 

was just a scheduled day off and 

they were back this week, which 

is good, because they’re my most 

welcoming drop-off. I just wish 

I had some hair for them to cut. 

And congratulations on the new 

location (3018 Bayshore)! It looks 

great. 

Everyone who knows Jose 

Ramos loves Jose Ramos. He’s 

the Mr Fix-It of Exit Zero Filling 

Station and the place would fall 

apart without him. But if he doesn’t 

start cleaning up his coffee area 

there is going to be a revolt. 

Quote of the Week: EZFS

big for me.” As ever, I’m leaving

Retracted Apology of the 

Week: Katie Dowe makes a second 

appearance this week for placing 

her GIGANTIC SIPPY CUP right 

in front of the phone I use at work. 

See, when I’m on shift, I’m usually 

the answers-phones-takes-orders-and-reservations 

guy, which 

is exceedingly difficult to do when 

someone places a GIGANTIC 

SIPPY CUP right in front of it. 

Last week I apologized to Katie 

for poking her Covid shoulder. I 

now retract that apology and will 

deliver two pokes to that shoulder. 

Satisfying Phone Moment of 

the Week: Jim Linnington called 

on Sunday to see if we were still 

serving brunch. I told him we were 

not, brunch is 10-2 Saturday and 

Sunday. He proceeded to tell me 

that the phone message (also me) 

stated the hours as 10-2 and it was 

currently 1:35pm and it’s bad to 

mislead your customers. I agreed 

that it is bad to mislead your customers 

but it’s actually 2:35pm and 

maybe you forgot to move your 

clock ahead for Daylight Savings? 

Oh, did we have a good chuckle. Jim 

and I have something of a friendly 

rivalry that has cooled in recent 

years. Still, this was pretty satisfying. 

Anyway, he and partner John 

Marchie came in for early dinner, 

enjoyed our sublime Ramen dish, 

and egregiously over-tipped their 

server. Also me. Thanks, guys!. 

Was nice to see Sherry and 

Paul McCord in for dinner last 

week. They absolutely HOUSED 

two bowls of potato leek soup, 

corned beef and cabbage egg rolls 

and their own shepherd’s pies. I 

don’t judge, but I’d recommend 

social distancing from them during 

Covid and/or when they’ve skipped 

lunch. It was quite the frenzy. And 

don’t blame me because it’s April 

now and you can’t get those delicious 

specials anymore. You had 

all of March. 

Was also nice to see Kyle 

Debenderfer out with a date last 

weekend. You may think Kyle is 

pretty screwed up the first time you 

meet him and spend five minutes 

talking, but considering Steve and 

Sandy are his parents, I think he’s 

remarkably well-adjusted. 

I wore a white linen shirt to my 

gig last Saturday and everybody 

was all like, “Hey man, nice shirt.” 

And I was all like, “What do you 

mean? I wore this all last summer.” 

So I tried to figure out what the 

big deal was about me wearing a 

white shirt. Then I looked at my 

wardrobe and my collection of 347 

black shirts. 

Lastly, I started this paragraph 

as an elaborate April Fool’s joke 

about quitting the column and 

ditching Exit Zero, but I couldn’t put 

you, my loyal readers, all six of you, 

through that pain. It would just be 

too cruel. So instead I’ll tell a bad 

joke. I went to my doctor the other 

day and said, “Doctor, doctor, I feel 

like a wigwam! Doctor, doctor, I 

feel like a teepee.” He said, “Ah, 

you’re too tense.”

Most times, this column tries to 

stay highbrow, but this week is 

a departure. You could say I’ve 

gone batty. Imagine a new property 

developer enters a rundown 

community to promote revitalization. You 

don’t have to imagine it. It’s happening every 

day in cities across the country. 

Gentrification can be used as a codeword 

for “Kick out poorer residents of an old neighborhood 

to make way for young, rich people 

to live.” Bringing new life into a neighborhood 

where homes have fallen into disrepair is a 

noble effort. But at the expense of displacing 

current residents is highly objectionable. 

Vampires vs. the Bronx is a Netflix film that 

focuses on a new real estate developer in the 

neighborhood. At first, the company seems 

pretty standard — buying distressed properties 

to renovate and get higher rents. Simple 

enough. There’s just one problem — they are 

actually vampires. 

The premise is hysterical. Miguel Martinez 

is a teenager played by Jaden Michael trying to

save the local bodega that he’s bought soda 

and snacks his whole young life. During his 

travels biking through the streets, he discovers 

they are vampires. His mission turns from 

trying to save the bodega to trying to save the 

neighborhood — maybe even the world! 

At times, this film can be silly and at other 

times violent. There are moments when it 

tries to relate substantial social commentary, 

but it does so almost as an afterthought. 

Consider forgotten neighborhoods or older 

residents who can easily be disregarded and 

cast aside. These are the casualties of gentrification. 

It’s good to want new life in rundown 

neighborhoods, but it’s also important 

to accomplish that responsibly. 

More in-depth statements subtly woven 

into a storyline make noteworthy films. And 

if director Osmany Rodriguez fine-tuned the 

juvenile action and jokes, we could have had a 

profound classic. Truly with a little tweaking 

this could have been a multi-award winner. 

What we’re left with is a watchable film 

that can be enjoyed. It’s not too long, and the 

young actors playing the three kids trying to 

beat the vampires are excellent and fun to 

watch. In fact, all the neighbors make a great 

ensemble. Unfortunately, this adolescent flick 

stays in its chosen space to its own detriment.

golfing friend of my wife texted 

her to let Linda know that 40 

(American) Robins were gathered in 

her Cape May yard. Across much of 

North America, most notably New 

England and Canada, the appearance of this 

brick-breasted thrush is celebrated as a sign 

of spring and with good reason. While this 

most common North American bird is abundant 

in Cape May during winter, they don’t 

strut across lawns until earthworms emerge 

to mate. This means unfrozen soil that supports 

spring flowers and hungry robins. 

My partiality to this sturdy thrush harks 

back to childhood, when the birds used to 

place their adobe nests in the red maple next 

to the garage, within reach of the exploring 

fingers of budding naturalists. They’re one of 

nature’s construction marvels. The foundation 

is worm castings or poop overlaid with 

grasses and other materials including some 

man-made. Bits of paper, gum wrappers, even 

the strands of plastic grass that adorn Easter 

baskets are suitable building material. Built

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

by the female and fitted to her dimensions, the 

nests may be in trees up to 25 feet tall or in the 

corners of man-made structures. I once found 

a nest in the remains of a sod outhouse of an 

abandoned whaling station on the coast of the 

Beaufort Sea. There wasn’t a tree taller than 

ankle-high dwarf willows for 200 miles, but 

two American Robins traveled to the northern 

limits of the continent to breed. 

Why? The arctic is insect rich in summer 

and young robins need a lot of protein. In 

winter, robins switch to a fruit diet. Holly 

berries are a favorite food item, explaining 

why tens of thousands of robins winter in 

holly-rich South Jersey. Apple orchards also 

attract wintering robins. Late October and 

early November are when the great hosts 

of wintering robins migrate through Cape 

May and mass movements may reach tens of 

thousands. One notable migration turned the 

skies over Cape May green on weather radar 

began at 10 pm and continued until noon the 

next day, possibly the greatest movement of 

robins ever recorded. I once drove from Cape 

May to Cape May Point on an early November 

morning to find Sunset Boulevard paved with 

grounded robins. It was a good day to be a 

holly berry in Cape May — holly trees count 

on robins and other berry-eating birds to 

disperse their seeds. This also accounts for 

the vast amount of Cape May’s open space 

supporting poison ivy. But don’t blame it 

all on the robins, woodpeckers and Yellowrumped 

Warblers feast on poison ivy, too.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to staying in... this week, take a trip to the zoo! 

Let the kids zoom around in real life at 

the Cape May County Park and Zoo’s 

Easter EggstravaganZoo. 

Every day is a good day at the zoo 

and Spring’s moderate temperatures 

mean the animals are a little more active. 

The kids can be a more active, too, with the 

help of special events running April 2 through 

April 11. Before you get to the front gate, shake 

off the stiffness of a long car ride with the 

Hopstacle Course. At the zoo entrance, pick 

up the entry form for I Spy Easter Eggs, an egg 

hunt that starts and ends at the carousel. The 

grand prize — chosen on April 11 — is a giraffe 

encounter for four people. There’s an Easter 

Scavenger Hunt — find and unscramble the 

six letters to figure out a secret word and earn 

a treat from the Easter Bunny. 

Admission to the Cape May County Park 

and Zoo is free, but donations are welcome, 

and this year, sorely needed. Covid restrictions 

are in place and you must wear a face 

mask. Picnic in the park and let the kids enjoy 

the playground before or after your zoo visit 

— no food is allowed inside the zoo. Strollers 

and wheelchairs are available to rent at the 

gift shop — call 609-465-0971 for more information. 

If your child is on the brink of using 

a stroller, bring the stroller along anyway 

— it’s a large zoo for little legs. Pack the bug 

spray, sunscreen, wipes and plenty of water. 

A change of clothes for the little ones is also 

a good idea — somehow, zoo drinks always 

seem to be purple and zoo snacks tend to be 

melt-y. Leave the pets at home — no dogs 

are allowed in the zoo. There is no smoking 

in the zoo. The zoo is located at 707 U.S. 9 

North, Cape May Court House. Their hours 

are currently 10 am to 3:30, park hours are 7 

am to dusk. 

If a regular day at the zoo isn’t enough, 

arrange for a private tour. Gain detailed information 

and behind-the-scenes secrets with 

this new event. The 80-minute tour, led by a 

zoo educator, gives you exclusive early morning 

access to the zoo. The tour is $200 for four 

people and $50 for each additional person up 

to eight. Or arrange a Giraffe Encounter, $140 

for up to four people, $35 for each additional 

person up to eight. This 20-minute encounter 

takes place three times daily and lets you 

get up close to the giraffes as they snack. 

Face masks are required for the duration of 

the encounter and for safety, children must 

be at least five years old. All children under 

18 must be accompanied by a paying adult. 

(Camel and Reptile encounters are currently 

suspended due to COVID-19).

pandemic. I felt sorry for her even though we 

don’t get along, but I figured this would only

for a few weeks. Well, you know how that went. 

Furthermore, she wasn’t really furloughed. She 

works from home at a reduced salary, but she 

is working and not contributing a dime. Five 

days ago, I came home to find she ate what I had 

planned for dinner. I went ballistic and told her 

to find someplace else to live. She has created a 

huge family drama over it and I’m having second 

thoughts. Did I react too impulsively? —

Nonsense. Your sister is a bit of a con artist 

and using your good nature against you. 

The problem, we suspect, is that you have provided 

too nurturing an environment. Tell her

proceed to make life less comfortable. Eat out. 

When you do cook, do so only for yourself. The 

Answer Lady would suggest cutting off the 

internet, but that would adversely affect you 

more than she. Meanwhile, you need a drink.

on the deck might make things more tolerable.

I had some people over to dinner a week or 

so ago — outside because it was such a warm 

day. At the end of dinner, I was shocked that no 

one offered to help me clean up. I always offer 

to help when I go to someone else’s home. I felt 

like saying something, but it was such a lovely 

dinner and so long since any of us have gotten 

together, that I kept mum. But I’m still miffed.

the hired help. You should not be expected to 

help as a guest. Doing so is very nice of you, but
