Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Everything is totally different 

on the food landscape these days, but in the interests of 

the public, we are still venturing out there and enjoying the 

victuals provided by local eateries. 

The place: We aren’t focusing so much on the place this week, but 

the delivery service that brought us lunch from Cape May staple Hot 

Dog Tommy’s! Beach Eatz is a Cape May delivery service bringing you 

delicious food, coffee and snacks from some of your favorite spots in 

Cape May — and it’s all through an easy-to-use app. 

The way it works: Download that Beach Eatz app on your Apple or 

Android phone and create your account. From there you can choose 

from an exclusive selection of Cape May restaurants, and they will 

deliver your order within seven miles of Beach Avenue — including 

West Cape May and North Cape May. They began home deliveries last 

year, but they will deliver right to your beach chair. 

The options: The app features exclusive spots — Hot Dog Tommy’s, 

Coffee Tyme, Cappy’s Pizza, Nick Filet and Good Earth Organic 

Eatery. Customers vote every year for what they want to see on the 

app, so if you aren’t seeing your favorite place this season, keep your 

eyes peeled for when voting starts for next year! 

The driver: We were lucky to have the business owner herself, 

Bianca Picardo delivering our food. Bianca was great in communicating 

that they were running a little behind and our food was still hot 

when it arrived. She told us that we were their tenth order of the season 

— they just opened this week and business has been great despite 

some dreary weather. This is year four and Bianca is very excited to 

see what the future holds for Beach Eatz. 

The food: It’s the first Hot Dog Tommy’s we enjoyed this season 

and there will definitely be more visits to come — probably when we’re 

on the beach. It was Kayla’s first time and she enjoyed the buffalo dog 

and Jack copied her and added the potato tornado bowl. Nicole went 

for her usual — the summer shower dog. 

The takeaway: Beach Eatz is an easy way to avoid packing up the 

kids and beach toys just to grab lunch. They are open Thu-Sun 12-5

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence 

My vision is blurred, my throat hurts 

and my back is killing me, which 

can mean only one thing. It’s mid- 

June! The time when those of us 

who practice music or serve food 

or tend bar or what-not remark on how we’re 

already burnt out and the season hasn’t even 

really started yet. And if the crowds at Exit Zero 

Filling Station are any indication, it’s going to 

be a bonkers season. So, to all my friends and 

colleagues providing a service, buckle your chin 

straps, we’re going in… 

Which reminds me, TNT (the iconic duo of 

Terry O’Brien and Tim Joyce, who have been 

compared to Lennon and McCartney if Lennon 

and McCartney didn’t write any songs) make 

our debut at Ferry Park tonight (Thursday) 5-9, 

playing all your favorite Lennon and McCartney 

tunes. We’re there every other Thursday 

throughout the season, which reminds me… 

Every OTHER Thursday I’m at EZFS with 

Nancy Malcun and our new duo, creatively 

called Nancy and Terry. Standing five feet to 

her right while she sings “Here’s Where the 

Story Ends” by The Sundays is my happy place. 

Nancy is a phenomenal singer. Nowhere near 

as good as me, but pretty phenomenal. (Okay, 

she’s better than me, just don’t tell her I said 

so.) Which reminds me… 

Celebrity Sighting of the Week: At our gig 

last week, Nancy asks me, “Is that Maggie 

Gyllenhall?” I look over and indeed it is. “And 

I think the guy she’s with is an actor, too.” And 

indeed it was — Peter Saarsgard, her husband. 

Maggie played the doomed Rachel Dawes in 

The Dark Knight (uh, spoilers for a movie from 

2008). And when Peter came up to request a 

song we didn’t know, I took the opportunity 

to tell him that Shattered Glass is a desert island 

movie for me and he should have won the 

Oscar. He seemed genuinely touched, but he IS 

a very good actor. Anyway, we ended up doing 

some Cyndi Lauper for them for which we 

received some very enthusiastic thumbs-ups. I 

was going to show them my Larry Crinkle commercial, 

but I didn’t want to intimidate anyone. 

While waiting for my sublime lunch from 

El Pueblo Taqueria (I had the salad bowl with 

chicken, Owen had the steak quesadilla), we 

ran into Jim from The Original Fudge Kitchen 

and his cutie pie daughter as THEY waited 

for THEIR El Pueblo (El Pueblo is very, very 

good). He was circumspect about the sale of 

The Original Fudge Kitchen and plans to stay 

on as he has for the last 40 years or so. I’m 

happy for Joe and Barn Bogle as they move onto 

their next chapters, but I’m really going to miss 

Joe singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” on 

their radio commercials.

about “I’m Not Where It’s At” until 

you played it for me. A perfect 

song. And also for ‘Laura,’ my 

absolute favorite Billy Joel deep 

cut. When my tribute band would 

play it, I always wondered, “How 

many bands in the world are playing 

‘Laura’ tonight?” One. It was 

probably one band. 

I really hope everyone involved 

in that semi-serious looking car 

accident in Villas on Thursday 

morning is all right, because the 

detour added 30 minutes to my 

route. Why don’t people put more 

thought into how their decisions 

affect me? 

I see you, Shoppe delivery guy, 

I see you. (We had a real Clint 

Eastwood stare-down outside Red 

Brick Ale House. He said, “I think 

it’s gonna rain.” I said, “Nah.” Then 

there was whistling and ponchos 

and stuff…) 

Nineteen years and nine 

months. It’s been that long since 

I’ve used the bathroom without 

someone knocking on the door. 

Employee of the Week: 

Makayla Huber has been working 

about a million hours a week at 

EZFS and always seems to be in 

at least a decent mood. I’m still 

mad at the string of decisions 

that denied her the chance to play 

Roxie Hart in Chicago her senior 

year, but she seems to have come 

to terms with it. Also, if you have a 

second, send a good thought up for 

her step-dad, Rob. He’s fighting 

the good fight, but could always 

use more people in his corner. 

After years of inheriting 

couches from friends who were 

getting rid of their couches, and 

said couches being tossed after 

a year or so reeking of cat urine 

and stale chocolate milk, I finally 

bought us a bona fide new couch 

that cost real money, now that I’m 

reasonably sure my kids won’t 

spill chocolate milk on it and that 

cat is dead. It’s a Lane sectional 

with ottoman that covers about 

80% of the floor space in our living 

room and it’s glorious. Pro Tip: If 

you order a $1000 couch from Big 

Lots online, they don’t take the 

money out until the order fully 

processes, in this case about three 

weeks, which caused a bit of consternation 

waking up to see my 

bank account at -$800. But don’t 

worry, it’s back up to -$100 now. 

Working Actor of the Week, 

Non-Famous Division: I booked 

and shot another industrial film 

last week, my fourth in the last 

year and third in the last few 

months. I wish I could say it was 

because of my rugged good looks 

and sunny disposition, but it’s 

most likely because these giant 

chunks of complicated word salad 

show off my greatest talent; memorizing 

lines real fast. I’m basically 

the Maggie Gyllenhall and Peter 

Saarsgard of regional mid-size 

pharmaceutical industrial films. 

Sex is great and all, but have 

you ever found a YouTube video 

you love but isn’t so popular they 

stick a half-dozen ads before it? 

That’s good, too. (Your mileage 

may vary, but for me it’s “Already 

There” by Joan Armatrading.) 

I was going to watch Space Jam 

2 when it premieres on HBO later 

this summer, but I hear LeBron 

James walks out with six minutes 

left.

Week: Frank Winters, husband 

of Gloria, friend of Carl and Sue

was I? Oh yeah, Frank barked that 

he didn’t like my new stick shaker 

and preferred the eggs, then 

demonstrated how to play them, 

resulting in said hilarity. Maybe 

you had to be there, but it was 

pretty funny.

The Theater Column

It’s good to see in a new reality some 

good ol’ acts still entertain. East Lynne 

Theater Company started a new outside 

program last week called Vaudeville 

Variety. This “pandemic friendly” set of 

stories and songs will give the post-lockdown 

theater experience everyone is clamoring for. 

Mae Savell Croy, played by Susan Tischler, 

is travelling the country promoting her new 

book, Putnam’s Household Handbook. Croy’s 

book contains suggestions such as, “If the 

baby wants to cry, let it do so, thereby exercising 

and strengthening its young lungs.” And 

let’s not forget one of my favorites, “Kerosene 

cleans just about everything.” 

Susan first played Croy in Helpful Hints 

a few years ago and has adapted that work 

for this program. She is one of my favorite 

character actors in Cape May, and this role is a 

classic! She never skips a beat or strays out of 

character. Be prepared to be stunned by some 

of the “advice” — the kind that worked maybe 

100 years ago. Times have changed, but the 

direct quotes from the book are priceless! 

Joining Mrs. Croy are two local favorites, 

Holly and Will Knapp, in a variety of classic 

skits for the whole family. Does the “world’s 

greatest knife thrower” still got it? Are you 

daring enough to volunteer from the audience 

who holds a cigarette in your mouth 

to find out? You may want to ask why the 

knife-thrower’s full-time assistant, Sylvester, 

is no longer with her. 

Holly and Will have been performing 

regularly in South Jersey since they moved 

to Cape May about 15 years ago. After graduating 

from University of the Arts in 2004, 

Holly performed at Elaine’s Dinner Theater 

— bringing Will on board in 2007 — and then 

served as the theater’s Artistic Director and 

Executive Producer for several years, where 

she developed nearly a dozen original shows. 

Not ready to sit in a theater just yet? 

That’s what makes this program so appealing. 

Outdoor theater will likely become the norm 

for a while, but it’s always been a wonderful 

way to enjoy a show. And this one is as light 

and breezy as a cool summer evening. The 

show lasts just under an hour — relax and 

enjoy the weather with fun skits and songs. 

Vaudeville Variety takes place on 

Saturdays at 7pm on June 26, July 10, 24, and 

31, and August 21 and 28 on Broadway! Well…

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

It was a hot, sunny, Sunday beach day. 

We navigated the walking path around 

the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape 

May Meadows Preserve. Taking shelter 

in the bird blind on the East path, 

we were captivated by the 50 or so shorebirds 

arrayed on the exposed mud flat, mostly 

Semipalmated Sandpipers. We were soon 

joined by two non-birding visitors. You could 

tell because of their beach apparel and lack of 

binoculars. They didn’t notice the sandpipers. 

Mud colored birds standing on mud defy all 

but a vocationally calibrated eye. But our 

discussion alerted them to the possibility of 

a close encounter with birds beyond the ken. 

Shorebirds are an acquired art even 

though many ardent birders pass them by 

in favor of those cone-cell searing birds like 

Indigo Bunting and Orchard Oriole which are 

worth a study when they dain to perch in the 

open. But the presence of our incipient birders 

made me realize how much their perusal was 

missing. Seeing sandpipers in New Jersey 

is to catch a narrow slice of their incredible 

loves. Breeding in the Arctic, fattening up 

in the Bay of Fundy before a nonstop flight 

to Suriname, then on to New Jersey, interim 

stop on their way back to the Arctic. The two 

visitors were also unaware that they were 

catching the bird’s migratory window as it 

was closing. Semipalmated Sandpipers are 

gone come late June. The more you know, the 

more fascinating these moments become. 

However, shorebird numbers are plum- 

meting, down 70 percent in just 30 years. Is 

that serious? And shorebirds are not the only 

birds facing population shortfalls. It has been 

estimated that three billion North American 

birds have been lost in just 30 years. The challenges 

birds face ranges from the proliferation 

of plate-glass windows along key migration 

routes, free-ranging cats, habitat loss, changing 

weather patterns and declines in large 

flying insect populations. 

What can you do? Place exterior screens 

on windows to soften the impact of birds 

striking glass. Keep cats indoors. Do not leave 

trash on beaches that attract crows, gulls 

and mammalian scavengers. These predators 

consume the eggs and young of beach-nesting 

birds. Support local initiatives that promote 

open space. Vote for candidates that 

support fully funded and staffed government 

agencies dedicated to habitat and bird protection. 

These biologists stand on the front 

line of bird protection. Most of all become a 

motivated partner in our on-going efforts to 

understand and maintain a healthy planet.

Forget all of those articles from 2019 

that assert that nobody wants your old 

stuff. Antiques are back in style. 

Being stuck at home for many 

months, an interest in eco-friendly 

decorating, or an interruption in the supply 

chain has awakened a new respect for old 

things. Antiques — generally considered to 

be over 100 years old — and other vintage 

goods are having a moment. “Granny chic” is 

in. Our improved cooking skills deserve fancy 

china plates. Our multiplying houseplants 

look prettier in repurposed teapots. Workfrom-home 

taught us the value of the sturdy 

drop-leaf kitchen tables that served America’s 

small kitchens in the 1930s. We’re buying, and 

we don’t feel guilty, because we’re upcycling. 

Antiques also offer sentiment. An item 

may have value because it reminds you of a 

person you love — a glass jar of buttons calls 

to you because you now understand your 

grandma saving every button. Travel is still 

dicey, so you hang a picture of celebrities on 

the Amalfi coast. An old softball glove is a 

nod to your younger self. They’re conversation 

starters, dreams, or tributes. 

Used items are more affordable than new 

ones, so you can take part in a trend without 

breaking the bank. As the mid-century 

modern craze fades into a fascination with 

1980s excess, add black lacquer, blond wood, 

or lucite and pay homage to the age of excess 

without the bank account of Alexis Carrington 

Colby (Ask your mother. Or grandmother.) 

Antique shopping also offers the thrill of a 

treasure hunt. It would be great to find a lost 

piece of fine art or other treasure, but it’s fun 

just to find the specific item you’re seeking. 

Cape May’s antique markets are reopening 

and some eager shoppers don’t even make 

it into town before they stop at the Cape May 

Antique Center, 1228 Route 109. With 70 vendors 

selling a wide variety of nautical items, 

tarot cards, Victorian-era furniture, and large 

outdoor items, this is a great place to look. 

Visit Antiques Emporia on West Perry Street 

for touches of whimsy, after you get your 

practical goods at Swain’s. Victorious features 

antique jewelry. The Antique Doorknob at 

600 Park Boulevard does indeed have knobs 

of all kinds, but also stained-glass panels, 

chairs and small couches. West End Garage 

mixes antiques with crafts and modern pieces. 

Garage sales remain the best places for deep 

discounts — sellers are eager to clean out their 

homes. Also visit summer craft shows like 

the Crafts and Collectibles show at the Emlen 

Physick Estate on June 26 from 10 am to 4 pm.

can I do to avoid any ugly confrontation or to 

be put on a slow shift? So far, I have the best 

tables and the best shifts. My fear is that could

Tough one. The best thing you can do is 

pretend you are oblivious to his interest. Be 

very nice to him but very formal. Call him Mr 

or Sir to underscore the authority and the age

We are women of a certain age, my best 

friend and I, and there is not a plethora of men 

available. The ones who are available either 

want to date much younger women or are 

men who are looking for “a nurse and a purse.” 

Lately, my friend is showing an interest in 

“Joe,” because he has shown an interest in her. 

I feel he’s interested in the “nurse and a purse” 

aspect and would have asked anybody out who 

fit that bill. She thinks I’m jealous (NOT — he’s 

boring and overweight) and won’t listen to my 

warnings. How do I wake her up? — Concerned

There is nothing you can do except be 

supportive — as supportive as you can be. You 

don’t want to alienate her, thus making “Joe” her 

whole world. What you can do is gently advise 

her regarding her “purse” especially if she has 

family who could stand to inherit but do it out 

of concern for them not with the idea that he his 

trying to get his mitts on her money. Smooth 

things over and invite both your friend and “Joe”

BUDDY BLUE is a six-year-old gentleman 

who came to the shelter when his owner 

died. He’s always known a loving home and is 

ready for a new family to show him that same 

love. Buddy Blue loves to go for walks and has 

excellent manners. He is crate trained and is a 

calm boy who needs a quiet household without 

children. 

DAISY is a settled, middle-aged girl who came 

to the shelter when her new owner couldn’t 

keep her anymore. She enjoys wandering 

around the yard and chasing tennis balls. Her 

beagle nose is actively engaged on walks, and 

she has wonderful leash skills. Daisy would do 

well in a home full of love that would allow her 

to have her own space.

came to the shelter when her owner moved 

back to Puerto Rico and she couldn’t handle 

the air travel. It may take some time but once 

you give her a little love Dory will warm right 

up to you. She hasn’t lived with kids, other cats 

or dogs, but a slow introduction should be fine 

and make her a great house pet. 

BUCK is what you may call a cranky old man, 

but he can be the sweetest cat you’ll ever meet. 

He is an old Tom Cat who has never been properly 

cared for. Buck is very depressed being in 

a cage and deserves a quiet indoor/outdoor 

home. He loves to bask in the sun and be a free 

spirit. Buck would be a wonderful companion 

to someone who wants his company. 

LUNA is a quiet and gentle girl who came to 

the shelter when she was found wounded 

and abandoned in a neighborhood. She was 

attacked by what seems like a dog and needs a 

loving home where she can feel safe. She is up 

to date on all vaccinations and spayed. Luna 

would be best in a home without dogs and 

children.
