Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Everything is totally different 

on the food landscape these days, but in the interests of 

the public, we are still venturing out there and enjoying the 

victuals provided by local eateries. 

The place: Saltwater Café — the marina-front eatery on your left 

right after the Lobster House when heading into town. Not only is this 

spot great for dining, but they have shopping at Fathoms just steps 

away in the same building. 

The vibe: It was a quiet Wednesday afternoon, but a beautiful 

day for outdoor dining. People were enjoying their meals out on the 

patio with a great view of the marina. We were in and out quickly, but 

everyone we encountered was eager to help us get our order taken care 

of. We didn’t have much time to browse the shops, but there were a 

ton of Cape May souvenirs, clothing and accessories along with some 

beachy knick-knacks to take home — something to check out during 

your vacation. 

The server: Diamond has been at Saltwater Café for seven years 

— it’s her family’s business. She grew up in Cape May and enjoys 

working in such a friendly and familiar environment, especially on 

the water. Diamond is a barista and helps with takeout. She told us 

that they only serve breakfast and lunch and have indoor and outdoor 

seating available. Diamond also let us know they are under new management 

this year so while some things have changed, it is the same 

menu and service you know and love. 

The food: Kayla and Nicole were on their own for lunch. We did 

our best to stick to our healthy-ish mindset. It was a little easier this 

week with Jack out of town and lack of his tater-tot taunting. Kayla 

enjoyed a wedge salad with blue cheese while Nicole went for her 

faithful favorite, a chicken Caesar salad. Every ingredient was super 

fresh, and the portions were the perfect size. We ordered it for takeout, 

but definitely want to give dining on the waterfront a try next time. 

The takeaway: Saltwater Café is open six days a week — closed 

on Tuesdays — from 8 to 3 pm. Enjoy a waterfront breakfast or a cozy 

lunch inside. They do take reservations and are currently hiring for all 

positions — apply within.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

come to you this week on the fifth of an 

unprecedented seven days off in a row, 

which I’ve totally been wasting on sleep, 

TV and movies or, as I call it, Living The 

Dream. Nancy Malcun came down with 

the Summer Bug (it comes for all) torpedoing 

our Thursday night show, while Tim Joyce 

(one of the Ts in TNT) has been bedridden all 

week. Sad, but on the bright side, he sounds 

like a crusty old blues man. We (hopefully) 

will return to our regularly scheduled gigs 

next week; Tuesday and Friday at Exit Zero 

Filling Station, 5-9 (530-930 on Saturday). 

Ferry Park on Thursday, 5-9, with Rob Lipkin 

sitting in for Tim, and on Saturday before the 

fireworks, 1-5. And we wrap up with an afternoon 

throwdown at the Rusty Nail on Sunday, 

2-530, by which time my voice will be all velvety 

smooth, like Harvey Fierstein imitating 

Vin Diesel. Join the fun! I’ll be napping… 

Father’s Day Gift of the Week: For the 19th 

year in a row, I was gifted the opportunity to 

pick out and pay for my own gadget. Last year 

I went with the Kobalt 40 battery-powered 

lawnmower (which runs like a dream and 

makes my lawn look nice and I love it like a 

fourth child which might be kind of strange 

and maybe I should talk to somebody about 

that but here we are), so this year I went 

with the accompanying weed whacker. It took 

some doing to get through a few of the areas 

that were allowed to grow unfettered since 

last year, but get through it I did and now 

my lawn looks 100% amazing. As a bonus, I 

know a lot of you don’t like me because I’m a 

Republican, but here I am, using electric doodads 

to maintain my lawn, saving the planet 

twice a week, while most of your machines 

fart out emissions and kill baby seals. So eat 

it, hippies. Get your patchouli stink outta ma 

face! 

Speaking of patchouli-stink hippies, 

there were quite a few of them playing some 

great music Wednesday night at the Opening 

of Gail and Craig Fitz’ Arts & Soul Studio (in 

the old Gecko’s on Sunset). Gregg Carpenter, 

Dan Barry, Marnie Bevan and Nate Kennedy 

performed from 4-8, playing seven songs 

(that’s a Jam Band joke) and I bought a cool 

necklace; a clef note made from guitar string. 

I also got to hang out with Ed and Teresa 

Henry for the first time in ages. We talked, we 

laughed, we drank, but mostly we helped each 

other up from the picnic benches. Arts & Soul 

has a wide variety of art and jewelry for sale, 

most of it hand crafted by Gail, and will have 

live music every Wednesday. Swing on by and 

support this new local business. Or else! 

I’m bummed the 76ers lost, but Trea 

Young of the Atlanta Hawks is a bad, bad 

man. He reminds me of Lenny Dykstra. Hated 



his guts until he put on a Philly 

uniform. Much respect. (This is a 

sports item, for readers like Tim 

Joyce who did not know Boston 

had a baseball team. Also, the 

best part of the NBA playoffs 

has been watching the games 

with my boys Henry and Owen. 

Owen, whom I shielded from 

Philadelphia Phandom for 18 

years, is just now learning that it 

brings nothing but interminable 

stretches of pain, an occasional 

unexpected championship, then 

interminable stretches of pain. 

I’m sorry, son.) 

My old (old, old) friend Tom 

Cupp got married last week! I 

asked, “Who’s the lucky fella?” 

because I’m still edgy enough 

to make gay jokes, and he told 

me it’s a woman named Donna 

Daniles, with whom he had a 

relationship years ago that was 

recently rekindled and she’s 

totally real and not made up AT 

ALL. (But seriously, congratulations. 

Tom is one of the nicest 

guys around and deserves all the 

happiness he can find. I just feel 

bad for Donna…) 

United Nations of Undertow 

of the Week: I will do whatever I 

can, diplomatically, to broker an 

agreement between the Avalon 

Bagel and T-Mobile stores in 

Rio Grande to clean up that 

gross-ass, busted-up smoker’s 

pole that’s been left to molder 

between their shops the last several 

months. Let us unite in the 

sweeping up of that shit. 

I don’t know what world-renowned 

pastry chef Michel Gras 

is giving away over there at Chez 

Michel (Park Boulevard), but 

every Thursday morning when I 

drop off magazines the lines are 

longer. Perhaps it is his world-renowned 

pastries. Perhaps it is 

crack. But probably his pastries. 

Which are like crack. 

I always just kind of want to 

hang out at Evolution Salon & 

Spa (Bayshore Road just before 

Villas) when I drop off their bundle 

of EZs. There’s a nice vibe, 

everyone seems happy, it smells 

nice. But they never invite me. 

Which is kind of mean and now I 

hate them. (Sorry, no gigs means 

I’ve been sober for almost a week 

and my moods are pretty volatile. 

It’s nice there. Go get your 

hair did.) 

I kind of feel like Brad 

Ransom (Nauti Spirits) and I are 

best friends now. He’s cool, I’m 

sorta cool. He’s got an awesome 

dog named Marshal, I’ve got an 

awesome dog named Charlee. He 

gives me finger-guns when I pull 

up with magazines... you make 

finger-guns with your middle 

finger, right? (I kid, I kid…) 

Tish Roussos Moment of 

the Week: I asked her if TNT 

should play outside last weekend 

because it looked like rain. She 

said, “It’s going to be a short little 

aggressive blitz” and I now have a 

name for my sex tape. 

Gordon Sterling, EZFS bartender 

and really the heart and 

soul of the whole operation, was 

cool enough to hang out at TNT’s 

first Ferry Park gig last week. It 

was then I noticed the man bun. 

I’m not sure if I hate it because 

I can’t grow one or because it’s 

a man bun, but one thing’s for 

certain, I do really hate it. It’s the 

only part of Gordon I don’t like. 

Well, that and his janky boat feet. 

Saw A Quiet Place 2 in Stone 

Harbor the other night ( B+ but 

be advised; the first 20 minutes 

is the best part, the rest of it is… 

fine) then stood in line for an 

hour for some Springer’s homemade 

ice cream. Worth it. But a 

little birdie (Pete Baldwin) tells 

me you can also get Springer’s at 

The Creamery (Junction of Rt 83 

& 47). As a diligent investigative 

reporter, I will have more on this 

next week.

New Show At SOMA 

The NewArt Gallery announces third art exhibition of the 2021 season 

SOMA NewArt Gallery announces its 

third art exhibition of the 2021 season, 

featuring three regional solo artists and 

their work. “A Day at the Submarine 

Races” by Rye Tippett, “Moments 

Well Spent” by Monica Nask and “Eclectic 

Harmony” by Marie Natale will be on display 

July 10 through August 8. 

Tippett’s paintings have humor, and his 

work is inspired by the countryside and changing 

seasons. Nask’s work is a visual diary of 

her days at the beach — she is inspired by 

landscapes along the coast. Natale’s simplest 

of subjects take on a special luminosity and 

combines the flow of paint with her light and 

brilliant magic. 

There will be an opening night Meet the 

Artist reception on Saturday, July 10 from 6 to 

9pm. Art lovers are invited to attend and enjoy 

an evening of art and conversation.

This isn’t West Side Story! This is In the 

Heights, and Lin-Manuel Miranda put 

it out there. He really put it out there. 

This isn’t a musical from yesteryear, 

like Hollywood does. This film was 

street level, and it was magnificent. 

Miranda doesn’t only give us a big picture. 

He shows a complete culture. He shows 

what it’s like to live where he grew up — in 

Washington Heights right above Harlem. He 

takes us back with the beats, the rhymes, 

the language, and bodegas — along with the 

struggles and challenges as well. The creator 

of Hamilton brings us back home with streets 

alive with song and dance. For as real as it is, 

there are fantastical scenes as well — imagery 

that defies gravity. The pavement becomes a 

stage to showcase ensembles expertly choreographed 

in amazing sequences that overpower 

everyday life. 

This film should be required viewing 

for every elected official. It will give them a 

glimpse of the hardships their constituents 

face. They don’t understand how people live. 

The Movie Column

The hardships are real and brilliantly depicted 

throughout the film. Issues of immigration are 

part of the story, but in this movie everyone is 

a “dreamer.” Everyone wants a better life. She 

owns a nail salon but wants to move to the 

Bronx. A cab company owner plans to send 

his daughter to college. Maybe not everyone 

finds their better place through formal education, 

but it’s all an education, nonetheless. 

This little big city takes center stage to 

shed light on underserved communities and 

underrepresented families. There are so many 

good people who hope, yet there is so much 

discrimination. Still today. Unfortunately… 

today. There may be differences in food, fashion, 

dance, music, and language — but we’re 

all saying the same thing. We all want to live, 

we all want to celebrate. 

And it was so good to get back to a movie 

theater again. No masks and keeping our distance, 

there’s just something about sitting in 

front of the silver screen with big sights and 

sounds. It puts you in the middle of it. I won’t 

take that for granted ever again. 

West Side Story was more of a modern spin 

on Shakespeare, and La La Land was not on my 

watch list (too much fluff for me). I almost 

didn’t go and see this movie because I saw the 

same show on Broadway. Or so I thought. The 

movie is better. It shows the disparities more 

clearly. We all need to be there for each other, 

no matter our backgrounds. It’s time we all 

have each other’s backs… like they do “in the 

Heights.”

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Cape May is so celebrated for our 

wealth of migrants, that our bounty of 

resident species gets short shrift. One 

of these is the Northern Mockingbird. 

You probably have one in your yard, 

a conservatively garbed Mimid that pours all 

its color into song. Capable of learning the 

songs of up to 200 birds over the course of 

its life, the standard repertoire of most male 

mockingbirds incorporates 10-15 songs or 

song parts in a set. 

They may also incorporate car alarms or 

doorbell chimes into their song set. Beginning 

in February, continuing into August, male 

mockingbirds will sing day or night, singing 

rings around their territories. Rival males that 

fail to get the message are vigorously pursued 

and these spirited tail chases may go on for 

several minutes or at least until the invading 

male gets the point. Females, too, vocalize 

but mostly in fall, perhaps as birds establish 

winter territories, because unlike many local 

songbird breeders, Northern Mockingbird is a 

permanent resident. 

Traditionally, a southern species as 

Harper Lee’s book attests. In the middle of the 

20th Century, the birds began a northward 

expansion. While always part of Cape May’s 

birdlife, mockingbirds were absent in North 

Jersey. I recall the first one I encountered, in 

the vacant lot across the street. Despite the 

bird’s manifest traits, I questioned the bird’s 

identity, because my field guide showed North 

Jersey outside mockingbird’s range. 

Today, mockingbird is found coast to coast 

but still largely avoids most of Canada. It’s 

resident status notwithstanding, Cape May 

birders do note an up-ticking mockingbird 

numbers in late August and early September. 

This might relate to dispersal of young or 

actual migration of New England birds. In any 

event you will not have an uptick of tail chases 

in the weeks to come as your resident mocker 

tries to hold onto its territory. 

While not especially feeder birds, mockingbirds 

do eat suet and will consume raisins 

placed on an open tray. But these hardy birds 

seem happy with whatever native berries 

happen to be around. These and an old elevated 

TV antenna seem all that mockers want 

or need. For you under 20 somethings, a TV 

antenna was the way we used to get television 

reception before dish or cable. It was a wire 

contraption most often affixed to the tallest 

point on your house that was connected by a 

wire to your TV. Antennas not only brought us 

Philadelphia sports broadcasts but proved the 

ideal perch for vocalizing mockingbirds.

There’s a lot to celebrate this 

Independence Day, so Cape May is 

bringing back the fireworks. We’ve 

missed a lot over the last year. It’s time 

to bring back crowded sleepovers, 

late-night cousin conversations, high stakes 

board games, squabbles over the shower 

lineup and disputed Kan Jam scores. It’s not 

a family reunion until someone has been 

accused of being, in Jefferson’s words, “deaf 

to the voice of justice and of consanguinity.” 

After all, what could be more American than 

a family dispute? 

Independence Day celebrates the 

Declaration of Independence and the uneasy 

compromises necessary to form a Nation. It 

took 17 days of internecine haggling to create 

this glorious, contradictory document, and 

there’s never been a better letter of introduction 

to “a candid world.” The eloquent list of 

grievances convinced colonists to see themselves 

as Americans, agreeing that “these 

United Colonies are, and of Right ought to 

be Free and Independent States” who should 

hold their relatives in England “as we hold 

the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace 

Friends.” John Adams thought the signing 

should be remembered with “Pomp and 

Parade,” and Cape May will do just that. 

Watch the Independence Day Parade, with 

classic cars, string bands and more at noon on 

Saturday, July 3rd, starting at Philadelphia 

and Beach Avenues. For a special VIP viewing 

of North Cape May’s fireworks, head over to 

the ferry terminal for a spectacular view from 

the Sunset Lounge balcony. For $45 per person, 

you’ll enjoy VIP parking and appetizers 

including beef, pork or chicken sliders, grilled 

vegetables, cheeses, breads and spreads and 

fresh-cut watermelon. Housemade iced tea 

and lemonade is included and there will be

music until the fireworks start at 9 pm. 

The fireworks will blast off on Sunday,

If you don’t fancy a firework show, enjoy 

a variety of free concerts in Rotary Park at 

400 Lafayette Street. Bring a blanket or chair 

and enjoy the music beginning at 7 pm. The 

lineup is the 63rd Army Band on Friday, July 

2; Jack Melton Swing Bang on Saturday, July 3; 

America’s Sweethearts on Sunday, July 4 and 

John Clark Band on Monday, July 5.

Fourth of July is coming, and I have to 

attend my aunt’s annual barbeque — the 

family hasn’t gotten together since COVID. 

The problem is I don’t like my aunt. I’m 18 

and I don’t think I should have to go to these 

things anymore. I mentioned it to my mother 

and she dismissed me. She doesn’t look at my 

aunt with the same eyes I do. The barbeques 

always at her house when there are five sisters, 

all of whom love to entertain. My aunt is very 

domineering so neither my mother nor my 

other aunts can contribute. It has to be all her, 

all day. When can I end this cycle of obligation 

and how do I end it? — Life Sentence?

So, this year, because of the reasons you 

outlined, the Answer Lady thinks you suck it 

up and attend, even if for only a couple hours. 

In future, you will be another year older and 

have friends outside the family. Maybe next 

Fourth, have your own barbecue. Perhaps your 

mother will be persuaded to attend. Since you 

are attending this year, improve your spirits 

by buying yourself an outfit for the occasion.

CHINA is a sweet girl whose owner was no 

longer able to keep her. She is a seven-yearold 

pup looking for a loving home. China loves 

taking walks and has excellent leash manners. 

Her previous owner indicated that loud noises 

and wheeled conveyances make her nervous.
