Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny 

on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we 

talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, 

who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay 

of the land. 

The place: Harbor View restaurant — the marina-side eatery on 

your left when heading toward Cape May on Ocean Drive. 

The vibe: Dan and Nicole went for a late dinner — the sun had 

already set and the deck was slowly clearing out. There was still a 

bit of a wait outside, so we chose indoor dining since it was already 

pretty late. We sat at a small table next to the bar with the Phillies 

game playing in the background. It wasn’t too crowded as the night 

was slowing down, but it was a cozy spot to enjoy our meal. 

The server: Marge has been a server at Harbor View since 2005 

and after that many years, it’s clear her heart is in it no matter how 

tough it gets. “I love it here, it’s easy to sell what you love. We are short 

staffed, but it’s been alright — thank god we have a good crew,” she 

says. “The owners Irene and Fred are an amazing help —food running 

and expediting. I’m by myself so it’s sometimes crazy, but I’ve been 

blessed and have had some of the best people all summer.” Marge had 

a wonderful handle on the inside, and it was a great experience thanks 

to her... and of course the drinks and food. 

The drinks: We had to kick off the weekend right with some 

drinks. Nicole enjoyed a pink lemonade martini complete with a 

sugar rim... her favorite. Dan was craving a beer — cue shock and disbelief 

— so he enjoyed a pint of Leinenkugel Summer Shandy. Both 

were delicious — Marge makes a sweet martini. 

The food: We started with BBQ baked scallops and Dan had a 

cup of clam chowder. Neither of us have ever had scallops prepared 

like that but they were mouthwateringly good. Dan then enjoyed fish 

tacos with pineapple mango salsa and Nicole went for the Caesar 

salad topped with London broil. Having London broil available is one 

of her favorite things about Harbor View and it did not disappoint. 

The takeaway: Harbor View is a great spot to dine, and you can 

arrive by boat or by car. For updated hours, call 609-884-5444.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence 

To begin with, an apology. All of you 

who allow us to bring copies of Exit 

Zero to your establishment are deeply 

appreciated by us, which is why it 

was so frustrating when distribution 

turned into a confusing mess last week. Long 

story short, we ended up 1,000 copies short of 

completing our delivery runs due to what we 

thought was a printing error. So my delivery 

colleague, Melissa O’Donnell, and I started 

doing the math on how we could get at least 

SOME copies to SOME of our outlets (math 

on the fly, mind you, as I was already an hour 

into my route, which is why some of you woke 

up to fewer copies than usual, or none at all. 

Couple hours later we find out it’s a delivery 

issue (those 1,000+ copies were left on a 

skid) and would be delivered the next morning, 

which is why some of you woke up Friday 

to little EZ bundles of joy on your doorstep. 

(At this point, “long story short” feels like a 

lie, but I’m painting a picture here, okay?) So 

I got to do my very favorite thing TWICE last 

week. Woo-hoo! (“Woo hoo” is also a lie.) On 

the plus side, Owen, my eldest, helped me 

out on Friday so I got to hang with him for a 

few hours, and I’m getting paid twice and not 

giving him any of it (I’m teaching him how 

communism works). What a country! 

Delivery means WXPN and Throwback 

Thursday. This week’s theme was Soul Music, 

a genre I’m indifferent to, but after an hour 

(literally, the 8-9am hour) of Aretha Franklin 

songs, I am a total convert. (Also, her fun 80s 

hit, “Who’s Zoomin’ Who” has a whole new 

meaning in 2021, doesn’t it?) Bonus: The 

4-5pm hour was all Prince, which is when I 

happened to be out running errands before 

my Exit Zero Filling Station gig with Jerry 

Kolber. That’s a win for Terry. 

Speaking of my Exit Zero Filling Station 

gig with Jerry Kolber, we had several this 

week due to a scheduling glitch and weather 

concerns, along with our regularly scheduled 

programs. In fact, by the time you read this, I 

will have set the EZFS record for Consecutive 

Nights Appeared (five). Boy, is Exit Zero paying 

me a LOT of money this week. 

Jerry and I have one more gig scheduled 

this year (August 12) but I’d like to thank him 

now for doing yeoman’s work covering Tim 

Joyce (away on family business) and stepping 

in on short notice when other gaps appeared. 

Good player, good singer, better guy. 

Somewhere around 1994 I had the great 

pleasure of working on stage with the effervescent 

Jen Polish. We performed this complicated 

dance move that involved her doing 

a cartwheel, me catching her legs and flipping 

her up onto my shoulders while simultaneously 

dropping to my knees as she “walked”

just thinking about it). It was 

an impressive bit. We rehearsed 

it exhaustively until it became 

one fluid motion and we became 

confident we wouldn’t kill each 

other. We performed this move 

successfully every night for 

about 12 weeks. In the 13th week, 

something happened and I was 

unable to do it without fear of 

injuring myself, or worse, her. 

I suddenly stopped doing the 

move and started thinking about 

the move until I got vapor lock. I 

called it “the yips.” Simone Biles 

calls it “the twisties.” So yeah, it’s 

disappointing she was unable to 

compete in the Olympics, but I 

totally understand where she’s 

coming from.

beard is merely an extension of 

the burgeoning angst I feel in a 

capitalistic, post-Covid America 

and reflects the deadening of my 

inner self and actually I have no 

idea what’s going on with my 

beard. It’s just, there, man. 

I got out on delivery a little 

earlier than usual this week so 

Evolution Salon & Spa wasn’t 

quite open yet, Scott was still 

vacuuming the floors and whatnot. 

Which I’m sure is why the 

WELCOME TERRY banner and 

accompanying streamers had not 

yet been deployed. Might I suggest 

you go ahead and set them 

up the night before so they’ll be 

ready to go if I get there early. See 

how that works? (Also, thanks 

for the hale and hearty greeting 

at my surprise Friday pop-in. I’m 

starting to feel like Norm from 

Cheers. And look like him.) 

Disproportionate Response 

of the Week: After a mild roasting 

by EZFS server Jenn Smith, for 

something so minor I don’t even 

remember what it was, I came 

back with, “I saw a movie last 

night that reminded me of you. 

OLD.” I apologize to Jen for this 

overreaction, which should have 

been reserved only for a fat and/ 

or bald joke. Jenn looks exactly 

her age and maybe a little under 

but I can’t be sure because I don’t 

know how old she is. Undertow 

regrets the error. 

I feel like, by now, every bartender 

in Cape May knows my 

default drink is Tito’s and club 

(got to save those carbs where I 

can), which is why it was such 

a shock to the system to take 

a sip of the Tito’s and SPRITE 

I was given by EZFS bartender 

Damien Contino. A simple soda 

gun mistake? Or a passive-aggressive 

attempt to poison me 

with sugar? Only Damien knows. 

Probably a mistake, because no 

one with the name Damien ever 

did anything wrong... 

My wife Cathrine came out 

to sing last week and we apparently 

had a full-circle fight arc 

(conflict-argument-resolution-apology) 

that I was completely 

unaware of. See? I’m such 

a good husband I don’t even have 

to participate in our spats anymore. 

I didn’t realize how bad the 

gutter situation had gotten in our 

country until I watched that infomercial 

while on the elliptical at 

Planet Fitness. Israel-Palestine? 

Rising inflation? Delta variants? 

No. It’s your gutters, people. 

Listen, that guy might be 

nuts, but he makes a crazy good 

pillow.

New Show At SOMA 

The NewArt Gallery announces fourth art exhibition of the 2021 season 

SOMA NewArt Gallery announces its 

fourth art exhibition of the 2021 season, 

featuring two regional solo artists and 

their work. “Distance” by Jim Inzero 

and “Uneasy Stillness” by Sharon 

Cosgrove will be on display August 14 through 

September 12. 

Inzero is returning for his eighth exhibition 

at SOMA with a new collection of encaustic 

paintings. He pursues an inward representation 

of landscape, challenged by the paintings 

to serve as reminders of distance. Cosgrove’s 

work explores themes of time, nature, balance 

and stillness. Her paintings offer infinite possibilities 

and joy in creating elaborate color 

relationships with complex patterns and forms. 

There will be an Opening Artist Reception 

on Saturday, August 14 from 6 to 9pm. Art lovers 

are invited to attend and enjoy an evening of 

art and conversation.

The Movie Column

Ride’m cowboy! Just watch the speed 

bumps! Concrete Cowboy is a movie 

featured on Netflix. It tells the story 

of Cole, a teen from Detroit who 

ends up in Philadelphia. He’s a quiet 

kid, but somehow, he manages to find trouble 

at his school. His mother can no longer take 

off time from work to pick him up because of 

disciplinary problems. 

Cole finds himself on the streets of North 

Philadelphia, one of the more underserved 

areas in a city of neighborhoods. His father 

works in the horse stables around the corner. 

Yes, deep within the inner city is a horse 

stable. It’s a remnant of history where horses 

were the only mode of transportation. The 

horses were abandoned, and some communities 

too. 

Cole’s dad cares for those horses and 

the people forgotten. The stable owners are 

ready to sell to new property developers. 

Gentrification strikes again. It’s wonderful to 

see neighborhoods revitalized but not when 

it’s at the expense of good, hard-working people 

who pay their rent and are forced to move. 

This movie does utilize some well-worn 

plot turns. Characters getting wrapped up in 

the wrong side of the law. People trying to 

get just one more deal before they get out of a 

bad hustle. Sure, we’ve seen these storylines 

before. But just as a horse is a noble creature, 

this movie has honor and dignity. 

Philadelphia plays a major role in this 

movie, as well as one of its native sons, John 

Coltrain. The Fletcher Street Riders, a group 

of black riders and caretakers who still exist in 

North Philadelphia, are featured throughout 

this film. In many ways, they save the horses 

— but sometimes the horses save lives too. As 

one rider says it, paraphrasing, “If it wasn’t 

for the stables and the work with the horses, 

I would’ve gotten into some pretty bad stuff 

on the streets.” 

If you were thinking Urban Cowboy or City 

Slickers, this is not those movies. As far as having 

“true grit” — it has more. Concrete Cowboy 

employs some tired motifs, but it scores big 

points for expert acting, cinematography, and 

directing. It also wins for shining a light on the 

negative side of urban renewal but especially 

for showcasing these horse riders of the inner 

city. Could we hear Oscar buzz about this later 

in the year? Stay tuned.

I 

know I’ve laid down this challenge 

before but to commemorate the publication 

of mine and Kevin Karlson’s 

new book Bird Families of North America, 

I would like to challenge Cape May’s 

residents and visitors to find 10 bird species, 

but not just any species, one representative 

species from 10 different bird families. So, 

Blue Jay and either American or Fish Crow 

still count as just one, all are members of the 

family Corvidae — crows, magpies and jays — 

a large family with a global distribution. 

In Cape May, we have one breeding hummingbird 

— Ruby-throated — but several 

breeding warblers including Yellow Warbler 

and Common Yellowthroat both of which 

nest in the South Cape May Meadows but 

many warblers from the Boreal Forests of 

Canada are migrating through, now. Head 

on over to the woodlot next to Cape May 

Bird Observatory to see a black-and-white, 

worm-eating Magnolia Warbler. While you 

are there, pick up a free checklist of Cape May 

birds arranged by family to help keep score.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

OK, you’ve got a corvid and a warbler, 

two families. A trip to the beach will score 

more. The small sandpipers playing tag with 

the waves are members of the Scolopacidae, 

a family that includes sandpipers, phalaropes, 

and allies. If you see a small shorebird 

with a dark band across its breast, that’s 

a Semipalmated Plover, a member of the 

Charadriidae. Laughing Gull? Another new 

family, the Laridae. 

Now head to the Hawk Watch Platform. 

See any swallows buzzing around? 

Hirundinidae. Any geese or swans? Score 

again, both members of the Anatidae (ducks, 

geese and swans). Heron or Egret? Ardeidae. 

Any vultures in the air? New family, the 

Cathartidae. How about an Osprey? The 

sole member of the family Pandonidae, a 

bird found everywhere but polar regions. If 

the osprey is being chased by a Bald Eagle, 

score again, eagles are Accipitrridae (diurnal 

raptors) recently split from the Falconidae 

(falcons and caracaras). I’m sure that’s more 

than 10 families and you haven’t even tallied 

House Sparrow (Passerellidae) or starling 

(Sturnidae). 

Not bad. And you didn’t have to leave 

Cape May. Your prize is a day afield at North 

America’s premier birding destination. With 

81 bird families represented in the continental 

U.S. and Canada, there’s still lots of adventure. 

And with fall migration just starting, lots 

of new bird families arriving daily, there are 

plenty of discoveries to be made.

All work and no play makes life dull. 

Luckily, you’re in Cape May, steps 

away from the world’s best playground. 

Go out and play! 

Though play is essential to the 

development of children, it’s not just kid’s 

stuff. Play — any activity you do for fun, with 

no concern for the outcome — is also good 

for adults. Play is how adults get to know 

each other, and how we strengthen existing 

social connections. Like dreaming, playing 

may perform a cleansing function for your 

brain, unleashing creativity that is normally 

blocked by checkbook balancing and grocery 

shopping. Play may also help to keep our bodies 

fit and our brains sharp, but it doesn’t have 

to be “good” for you to be important. The play, 

as they say, is the thing. 

The beach is an outstanding place to play. 

In addition to the fun, you can have frolicking 

in the surf, you have your choice of games. 

The best beach games have simple rules and 

require equipment that is easy to carry or 

easy to find — this is essential, because you’re 

probably walking or riding your bike. Find 

a stick and play Pictionary in the sand or 

draw up a list for a scavenger hunt. Draw a 

hopscotch court and use shells for markers. 

Play modified horseshoes using shells — one 

point for getting it in the circle, three points 

for landing exactly on the bullseye. Use your 

beach towel for tug-of-war or play musical 

chairs on beach towels. With a couple of buckets, 

you can have a water-carrying relay race. 

Play catch with a football or Frisbee or set 

up targets. If your players are young, opt for 

rolling games rather than throwing — carve 

yourself a little skee ball lane or bowling 

alley in the sand. You only need a little equipment 

for wiffleball, paddleball, Kan-Jam, or 

Spikeball. There are beach towels that double 

as Scrabble or checker boards. Those large 

waterproof playing cards are fun but keep the 

stakes low — your opponent will likely see 

your hand. 

Don’t be surprised if spectators ask to 

join in — fleeting beach friendships are some 

of the joys of summer. And, if there’s no one 

to play with — we all agree that the luxury of 

a solo trip to the beach is matched only by a 

solo trip to the movies, right? Set up your own 

targets, fly a kite, or predict when you’ll see 

the day’s first dolphin. Be considerate of other 

beachgoers when you play — you don’t want 

to hit anyone, so look for space at the back of 

the beach or between lifeguard chairs. Keep 

score, or don’t — it’s not whether you win or 

lose, but that you play the game.

became too sick to care for him. He is a playful 

8-month-old boy who loves to fetch. Tyson is 

respectful of personal space and sits nicely on 

command. He would make a wonderful companion 

for an active family who is ready to 

work with his puppy energy. Tyson is housetrained 

and up to date on his vaccinations. 

NEWTON came to the shelter a shy, 10-yearold 

boy. He has settled in and is very happy 

and eager to learn. Newton is learning useful 

behavior cues and leash skills. His puppy 

behavior makes him a lively and fun companion. 

Newton has the potential to be a wonderful 

companion for a family that is willing to 

continue his training. 

STAR is a sweet girl who came to the shelter 

when her owner got sick and could no longer 

care for her. She is a little nervous when meeting 

new people, but quickly becomes friendly 

and social. Star loves to play fetch and thinks 

she is a lap dog despite her 94-pound stature. 

She is learning more behavior cues and will 

make a loving companion to any family.
