The Make-or-Break Decade for the SDGs has begun

Despite some successes in development and environmental politics, progress is far from sufficient to achieve real sustainable development. We know that the 2020s are the make-or-break years. In the new 2021 edition of the Global Goals Yearbook we discuss barriers and solutions.

What is <strong>the</strong> c<strong>or</strong>p<strong>or</strong>ate relevance of<br />

<strong>the</strong>se policies?<br />

In both Green Deals, <strong>the</strong>re is a call f<strong>or</strong><br />

private-sect<strong>or</strong> involvement. <strong>The</strong> role of<br />

<strong>the</strong> private sect<strong>or</strong> in <strong>the</strong>se policies can<br />

be categ<strong>or</strong>ized into five c<strong>or</strong>e <strong>the</strong>mes.<br />

• Innovation and digitalization<br />

Fostering sustainable innovation and<br />

creating new business models present<br />

an opp<strong>or</strong>tunity f<strong>or</strong> business to differentiate<br />

and capture new markets. <strong>The</strong> EU<br />

is encouraging entrepreneurship and<br />

innovation through tax-ref<strong>or</strong>m incentives<br />

that could encourage sustainable<br />

behavi<strong>or</strong>.<br />

Leveraging digital innovation is a key focus<br />

of both deals; <strong>the</strong> EU emp<strong>has</strong>izes <strong>the</strong><br />

need f<strong>or</strong> digitalization in <strong>the</strong> fight against<br />

<strong>the</strong> climate crisis and to transf<strong>or</strong>m <strong>the</strong><br />

economy to meet <strong>the</strong>ir ambitions. Digital<br />

and disruptive<br />

technologies can<br />

play a key role in delivering<br />

climate ambitions,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> private sect<strong>or</strong> can be<br />

<strong>the</strong> fundamental enabler.<br />

<strong>The</strong> focus of both <strong>the</strong>se policies is<br />

around reducing GHG emissions, and<br />

consequently <strong>the</strong>re is significant appetite<br />

f<strong>or</strong> low-emission technologies and<br />

sustainable products. <strong>The</strong> private sect<strong>or</strong><br />

will be able to capitalize on <strong>the</strong> new<br />

markets and jobs that will emerge in<br />

<strong>the</strong> face of <strong>the</strong> transition to decarbonize<br />

<strong>the</strong>se economies.<br />

• Collab<strong>or</strong>ation<br />

Climate change is a global issue, and<br />

cross-b<strong>or</strong>der collab<strong>or</strong>ation and action<br />
