Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny 

on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we 

talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, 

who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay 

of the land. 

The place: The Raw Bar at the Lobster House — the first left 

coming over the Cape May bridge into town. Head straight through 

the restaurant’s front doors to the back deck and it is right before the 

Schooner entrance. The Lobster House has been around for four generations 

and is a must-try stop in Cape May. 

The vibe: It was a breezy Friday afternoon, and the sun was shining 

just the right amount — a perfect day for lunch near to the water. 

It was busy throughout the deck and at every spot through the Lobster 

House property. They have the inside restaurant, the Raw Bar, the 

Schooner, the take-out shop, the Fish Market and the Coffee Shop. 

Tables lined the deck all the way down to the end of the building along 

the harbor and families, friends and some pups were enjoying the 

fresh air along with their lunch. They make it very easy inside the Raw 

Bar — peruse the menu while you wait in line, place your order and 

pay at the counter. Grab a table and listen for your number to be called 

over the loudspeaker. It’s a very easy way to enjoy some fresh seafood 

selections or sandwiches that come out quickly. 

The food: Kayla started with a cup of the snapper soup — we 

debated for a while about it actually being made of turtle. Kayla has 

been told two different stories, so any insight on this serious matter, 

please let us know! She also enjoyed the flatbread pizza with shrimp. 

Nicole started with her favorite, the barbecued clams, and then had 

the spinach salad, which she had leftovers of thanks to a very good 

portion size. We stayed hydrated with some bottled water, but no 

doubt our eyes were following all the orange crushes and ice-cold 

beers walking by us… we managed to restrain ourselves. 

The takeaway: The Lobster House does not take reservations and 

their inside restaurant is open year-round. For more on the hours of

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

he good news is it’s been a relatively 

boring couple of weeks here at 

Undertow Central. The bad news is that 

that makes for very boring reading. So 

prepare yourselves for 1250 words on 

“Things I Picked From My Belly Button”... 

One super-cool thing I did last Sunday 

was scoop Owen up at Rowan (I’m a poet, 

didn’t know it) and head to Wiggins Park in 

Camden for the Xponential Fest, sponsored by 

and featuring many very, very WXPN artists. As 

a newly minted Dawes fan (I really can’t recommend 

them enough) I was STOKED to see them 

close the show, right up until the moment they 

canceled at 10 o’clock Saturday night. (Covid. 

UGH!) I almost didn’t want to go, but I’m glad 

I did because, first and foremost, it was a day 

with my son, and also because the rest of the 

acts were pretty amazing. Sierra Ferrell, Jade 

Bird and Nicole Atkins on the Marina Stage, 

Devon Gillfilian, Cimafunk and Shovels & Rope 

on the River stage. Just… wow. Put all of these 

people in your YouTube or Spotify playlists and 

I guarantee you will hear songs you like. ’Twas a 

beautiful day filled with wonderful music and I 

can’t wait to go back next year. 

I missed Tommy Conwell & the Young 

Rumblers because of traffic, but caught them 

on the radio and man, those guys cooked. 

Remember 1987 when they tried real hard to 

make him a rock star? MTV videos and opening 

the Grammys? Didn’t quite work out, but he’s 

still had a good run. 

I wore my cool Gojira (Godzilla) T-shirt 

which received many compliments, and it 

was confirmed the Japanese symbol beneath 

the rampaging nuclear lizard did, indeed, say 

“Gojira” and not some horrible racial slur, as I 

long feared. 

Upon returning from what felt like my 100th 

trip up and down 47 & 55 in the last month, 

I popped in to 5 West to unwind with a delicious 

Poco Diablo martini (or four) mixed by 

the lovely Jordan, and kibbutzed a bit with Man 

About Town Ed McDonough about our lovehate 

relationship with the Phillies (currently on 

love, but check back in a week). A great way to 

end a weekend. 

I caught up with Studmeister General Zack 

Baron outside my Rusty Nail gig. I told him 

I’d just deleted a bunch of contacts I don’t use 

anymore, his included, because, “I haven’t seen 

Zack in three years, when’s the next time I’m 

going to need his number?” Turns out it was two 

days later. Oh, universe… how you toy with me.

think our impact on the American 

music and cultural scene has been 

just as great, if not greater. (Catch

million times but not as good as we 

play them.) 

I’m not sure when co-ed 

sleepovers became a thing, but if 

they’d existed in my day I’m pretty 

sure I would have lost my virginity 

at... the same time I did.

news shows as I wrote this on 

Saturday morning and now I’m just 

mad at everything. 

Why I Love Tom Cruise Reason 

#3,472: The Last Movie Star not 

only guarantees you are going to 

see a high quality film product for 

better (Mission: Impossible) or worse 

(The Mummy), but he also refused 

to even consider a Top Gun sequel 

without Val Kilmer, who lost his 

voice to cancer. Adam Sandler is 

my best friend, but I have room for 

two if Tom ever casts me in anything. 

Maybe a remake of Twins? 

Damien Contino (aka Ichabod 

Pornstache, a nickname I really 

thought would gain more traction), 

in a desperate bid for Undertow 

relevance, tried and failed to do 

anything funny, smart or stupid 

enough to earn my attention. Nice 

try, Damien. Oh, wait... 

Be forewarned; if you wear a 

“Cuddle Monster” T-shirt, you can 

be damn sure I’m coming in for a 

cuddle. (Sorry, random lady outside 

Joe Canal’s last Thursday.) 

I saw Kristin Bartle, as usual, 

as I drove up to Nauti Spirits to 

drop off magazines, but she had 

no dogs. Do… do people just go 

outside and walk? Without dogs? 

The little Facebook message 

icon glowing red for days at a time, 

indicating a new message has been 

received despite there being no 

new message, makes me want to 

launch my phone into the sun. 

Never, ever buy a half-pound 

bag of Swedish Fish thinking, “I’ll 

only eat a few of them.” 

My wife giving her number to 

EZFS Turkish bussers, Samet and 

Emre, is peak 2021. I live with her 

and I can’t get her number. 

Lastly this week, if you 

attended and enjoyed my stupid 

show, Young Dracula, last October, 

which was the centerpiece of 

our West Cape May Christmas 

Parade fundraiser, then boy are 

you in luck because we’re doing an 

even stupider show this year! The 

Mostly Dead is a Zombie Romantic 

Comedy Fairy Tale Musical, a 

genre I think I may have invented, 

and will show at 5pm and 7:30pm 

at Exit Zero Filling Station on 

Wednesday, October 13 (rain date, 

the 14th). Me, Kevin Ebner, Jeff 

Sharkey, Lisa Weck, Amanda 

Brough and Miranda DeLong will 

once again do our best to keep a 

straight face and make you laugh 

for an hour or so. Reserve your

in early because both shows sold 

out last year. I can’t promise it’s a 

very good show or will make a lot 

of sense, but I can promise you’ll 

chuckle at least once and will feel

The Theater Column

It was the swingin’ 1960s, and Barney 

Cashman (played by Andy Prosky) 

decided to take his turn. Neil Simon’s 

classic play, Last of the Red Hot Lovers, 

will take you into the world of a middle 

class, upright man trying to be a happenin’ 

guy. It’s in a world he isn’t ready for, 

and it isn’t ready for him. Barney chooses 

his mother’s apartment to test the waters of 

this new world of freedom and choice. While 

change swirls through society, the apartment 

is firmly planted in the 1950’s complete with 

black rotary phone, oil paintings of ships, and 

sconces on the walls. East 37th Street never 

looked so good! 

Prosky brings us a hero who becomes 

more confident and realizes all he wants to 

be is a kind, loving, decent man. He searches 

for romance with three women, all played by 

Rita Relm. Her ability to transform in each 

scene is an act of wonder. She plays Elaine, 

a domineering, carnal, tough woman who 

brings Barney self-doubt and self-loathing. 

She chews him up and spits him out. Prosky 

shows us a vulnerable, inexperienced man 

who can’t stand up to her withering attack. 

Relm then morphs into the quintessential 

California Girl, Bobbi, who our hero meets 

in Central Park. He lends her $20, and she 

comes to repay. He soon realizes he isn’t 

getting his $20, or anything else. Bobbi says it 

all — “Married men are rarely vicious...they’re 

too guilty.” Transcendent insight for a girl who 

can’t remember where she is. 

By the time Barney brings Jeanette to 

mom’s apartment, he becomes more aware 

of the expectations around what a swinger 

should be. Jeanette is a caricature of the 1960s 

housewife. She takes pills for what ails her — 

her husband’s affair with a friend of hers. 

This play is a microcosm of the changing 

values and morals of the 1960s with a 

twist of humor and thoughtfulness. Prosky’s 

portrayal of Barney’s evolution is engrossing 

and compelling. We become his supporter, 

succumbing to his basic human attraction 

as a good person. Relm’s backstage changes, 

not just of costume but of the entire persona, 

are stunning. She is unrecognizable from one 

scene to the next. 

You don’t need to be a devotee of Neil 

Simon to appreciate the humanity of the characters 

in this production. Prosky and Relm 

take you back to the 60s to find searchers, 

seekers, sometimes brutal and sometimes 

kind. The play runs through November 21 at

When Blackpoll Warblers begin 

turning up in Cape May, you 

know fall warbler migration 

is nearing its finale. Breeding 

across most of Boreal Canada 

and Alaska as well as mountain tops in New 

York and New England, these bantamweight 

forest birds are the long-distance champions 

among southbound songbirds. Weighing 

less than half an ounce, but nearly twice the 

weight of a Northern Parula (warbler), they 

jump off from northern New England after 

doubling their body weight, then fly nonstop 

over the Atlantic to winter grounds in South 

America. The 1,800-mile nonstop flight takes 

three days, and the birds lose half their weight. 

To accomplish this feat, birds jump off with a 

northwest tail wind, then rely upon the trade 

winds off ofNorth Africa to see them home. 

This long and risk-filled route works. 

There are fine winter habitats in the Greater 

and Lesser Antilles, but these are used by 

warblers that lack Blackpoll’s powers of flight. 

I’ve noticed in recent years, more Blackpolls 

turn up in Cape May. Their growing fall numbers 

seem linked to the proliferation of porcelain 

berries. This invasive Asian plant is 

alleged to have low nutrition value for birds, 

but the partiality of Blackpolls and other 

fruit-eating birds says different — as does the 

proliferation of the berries whose seeds are 

widely spread by defecating birds. 

Most Blackpolls in fall are yellowish and 

vaguely streaky. Find them in the cedars north 

of the hawk watch platform at Cape May Point 

State Park, the trees in front of the Northwood 

Center in Cape May Point and where you find 

multi-colored porcelain berries. The other 

late-season warbler to watch for is the Yellowrumped 

Warbler. This one that winters mostly 

in the US, even as far north as Cape May. 

Distinguished by their bright yellow rumps, 

Yellow-rumped warbler feeds on poison ivy 

berries and bayberries, but augmenting their 

diets with insects and insect larvae. Wait until 

December and you won’t have trouble identifying 

it. It’s about the only warbler in town. 

Unless you are lucky enough to find a rare 

wintering Orange-crowned Warbler or catch 

a glimpse of Common Yellowthroat skulking 

through the reeds. 

If warblers are what you seek, look fast 

or wait until Spring. The southbound warbler 

express is pulling out of the station. Local

a treat, and my good friend Kevin Karlsons 

multi-panel warbler cheat sheet is both precise 

and concise. Buy both.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, celebrate Fall at Historic Cold Spring Village! 

Fall is like the evening of the year, a 

drowsy time that somehow sets your 

senses tingling. Just as you nod off, 

you hear something. A footstep? A 

tap on the window glass? You want to 

dismiss it — you’ve already locked the doors 

and windows. You look to the dog for reassurance 

and find she, too, is attentive — to 

what? Is that a child’s voice? The music of a 

fife? Perhaps logic steps in at this point, recognizing 

that the neighboring fourth grader is 

learning the recorder. Or is he? 

If you believe in ghosts, you’re not alone 

— surveys suggest over a third of Americans 

believe in them. Evolution gets the credit for 

our need to believe — our sense that something 

isn’t right prompts us to react quickly. 

Better to flee an imaginary threat and be 

wrong 100 times than to consider whether a 

noise is dangerous and fall victim to a predator. 

When that slow logic fails, and the voice, 

or the fife, can’t be explained away, we call it 

a “ghost.” Once we believe, we are likely to 

experience the supernatural — a face in the 

robe on the back of the door, voices in the 

rain, and feeling contact when the weather 

changes. Ghosts serve the secondary function 

of addressing our mortality and the existence 

of an afterlife, where our loved ones, and 

someday, we ourselves, will continue to exist. 

Exorcise your need for ghost stories at 

Historic Cold Spring Village this fall. Try a 

Ghost Walk Tour — enjoy an hour-long evening 

stroll through the village as a guide tells 

you all about the spirits that linger — the 

apprentice in the print shop, prankster in the 

school, kids in the ice cream parlor. Tickets 

are $16 for adults and $14 for kids 12 and 

under, with discounts for members. Social 

distancing an masks inside are required.

Club’s Pumpkin Festival and Harvest Food 

Drive, Saturday, October 16, from 10-4. 

This free event transforms the village — the 

barn becomes a haunted house, the streets 

become an outdoor mall, and hot dogs and

My mother-in-law watched our house 

while we were away. When I got back, she 

had rearranged every piece of furniture in the 

house. I was furious. My husband said to shut 

up and he’d be glad to help me put it back. Still, 

I feel like a stranger came through and touched 

everything I own. She had no right to do that, 

and I feel I must say something, or she’ll do it 

again. Don’t you agree? — Invaded 

Dear Invaded 

Yes, you must say something but do it 

gently. Your husband probably fears a turf 

war starting over his mother’s interference. 

Clearly, he has navigated these waters before. 

That said, talking to her will get you nowhere, 

but she should know you’re not going to ignore 

this boundary crosser. Soften the blow by 

taking her to Harbor View for a cocktail and 

sushi. Start by simply asking why she felt 

compelled to move the furniture. Expect some 

criticism of your decorating skills. Smile and 

try to zip it. And find someone else to watch 

the house next time. Cheers!

STORM is a young, active boy who came to the

moving object he sees. Storm's leash skills are 

improving, and he has a lot of energy. Storm 

would be best suited in an active home and 

one that knows his breed. 

STAR is a sweet girl who came to the shelter 

when her owner got sick and could no longer 

care for her. She is a little nervous when meeting 

new people, but quickly becomes friendly 

and social. Star loves to play fetch and thinks 

she is a lap dog despite her 94-pound stature.
