Gran Canaria’s award-winning cheeses
The quality of Gran Canaria’s cheeses once again shone through at the
2021 World Cheese Awards, held at the end of last year in Oviedo
At the end of last year, Oviedo was the chosen
venue for the 23rd edition of the World Cheese
Awards, the most renowned international
cheese contest on the continent, organised by
The Guild of Fine Food. For decades, the World
Cheese Awards have brought together cheese
professionals to judge the best products worldwide.
In its 33rd edition, 4,078 cheeses from 5 continents
participated in the international cheese
competition, and were judged by 256 international
judges; and happily, 41 cheeses from the
Canary Islands were awarded prizes, with 15
medals going to cheeses from Gran Canaria.
The island’s awards, consisting of 1 gold, 8 silver
and 6 bronze medals, were awarded as follows:
the Quesos La Gloria brand won a gold medal for
their mature goat variety. The silver medals went
to Quesos Bolaños, Quesos Naroy, Quesos San
Mateo, Quesos San Mateo Volcania (in the cured
cow and goat and cured goat varieties), La Era del
Cardón, Cortijo de Caideros and Cueva Sosa. And
the bronze medals went to Artesanal Guedes, La
Gloria, Quesos Caseros de Valleseco, Madre Vieja,
Lomo Gallego and Quesos San Mateo.
“These awards serve to underline the high quality
of cheese production on our island, which is the
result of great effort, dedication and good work
on the part of both our male and female producers",
said Miguel Hidalgo, the Primary Sector and
Food Sovereignty Councillor at the Cabildo de
Gran Canaria, a department that promotes and
finances the participation of Gran Canaria’s cheesemakers
in this contest.
These awards, as well as further enhancing the
prestige already enjoyed by the Gran Canaria
cheese sector, are an important boost for the
island's producers, both in terms of morale and
economic profit, as the firms proudly feature
their awards on their product labels, which lends
them a greater guarantee and added value for
consumers.
