Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: 5 West Pub on Bayshore Road in North Cape May. This 

restaurant comes from the same family behind Tisha’s in Cape May. 

The server: Stephanie H. has been a part of the 5 West team for 

three years and she told us it’s her customers and co-workers who really 

keep her around. “They’re the best, and a great family to work for,” she 

says. “We have a ton of regulars who stop in, and they truly make the 

job worth it.” The food is also a big part of her love of 5 West — when 

we talked about her favorite items, she grabbed a menu, finding it hard 

to pick just one. “Everything is so good — it’s difficult to choose,” she 

says. “Dirty shrimp and tots are number one for appetizers, our buffalo 

chicken noodle soup is amazing, the Cuban torta is my favorite sandwich 

and the chicken marsala is incredible.” Needless to say, she had 

our mouths watering and our minds planning our next trip back. 

The food: It was quite the takeout order we placed and always 

worth the extra drive from West Cape May. Kayla had the Rajun Cajun 

burger, Nicole went for the crab cake tacos, Jack enjoyed the chicken 

cheesesteak wrap and Filling Station manager Katie had the bourbon 

burger. It was also Katie’s daughter Olivia’s 20th birthday, so she joined 

us for lunch and ordered a classic cheeseburger — more importantly, 

she enjoyed a heaping piece of birthday peanut butter pie during her 

celebration at the Filling Station later that night. We hope it was a 

happy birthday, Olivia! 

The takeaway: 5 West Pub is open year-round and they’re gearing 

up for the season with their regular live music schedule on the horizon. 

Currently, 5 West has rotating local artists playing inside on Wed, Fri 

and Sat. Once the weather begins to cooperate — and we are finally let 

off this rollercoaster of snow, wind and sun — their outside patio will 

open for a variety of artists all summer. 5 West also offers a rotating 

happy hour menu daily from 3-6 that includes half-priced appetizers 

and half-priced pizza. Like Stephanie says, it will be difficult to choose 

a favorite because everything is just that good.

The best thing Will Smith did last week 

was make Amy Schumer promise to 

take a month off. Thank You of the 

Week: To Antojos in North Cape May, 

a place of sublime desserts, for the 

continued use of your restroom while I’m on 

delivery, and for the can of Febreze emblazoned 

with my name. It’s about time I got 

some goddamned respect around here! And 

bro, how good was Moon Knight? 

I am willing to concede that the sudden 

influx of R.E.M. and Squeeze (and dozens of 

other great New Wave bands) onto the playlist 

at 101.5 WCFA since I started writing about 

them is a coincidence. I am also willing to concede 

that the guy in charge of the 7am-11am 

Thursday morning block, Ed La Duca, has 

incredible taste in music. I will also concede 

that it’s entirely possible that he was playing 

this music for years before I ever noticed 

because the world doesn’t revolve around me. 

A HUGE concession. Whew… three concessions 

in one paragraph… I need to lay down… 

Turns out my accountant, Joe Mento over 

at Cape Bookkeeping (longtime numbers gal 

Karen Mirabile has moved on to greener pastures), 

lived for a stretch in my hometown of 

Kennett Square, PA and was well-acquainted 

with my family when I was but a wee lad. 

Doesn’t that warm your heart? Make you all 

warm and fuzzy? I know, me too. And still I got 

screwed with this terrible return… KIDDING! 

I kid. I know there’s laws and codes and ethics 

and other such ramifications of your government 

printing endless supplies of money for 

two years… or are there… (slips $5 into Cape 

Bookkeepings weekly bundle). If you’re still 

procrastinating, give them a ring. They’re good 

folk. 

I confronted Tamzin Kelly, a computer 

programmer and frequent visitor to Exit Zero 

Filling Station, on why she was there so often? 

Which devilishly handsome bartender was she 

hoping to reel in at night’s end? Gordon or 

Bane? She answered, “Who says it’s just one of 

them?” Well played, Tamzin. Well played. 

The night grew dark, the wind blew cold, 

and Justin Mattes strolled into EZFS. Trouble 

follows Justin like a bad penny. When he dies 

in a shootout with six other gunmen at the OK 

Corral, his tombstone will read, “Here Lies 

Justin Mattes: Nothing But Trouble.” 

I’m not generally one to heap praise upon 

bloated government bureaucracies, but I have 

to say, the road crews working Bayshore Road 

in North Cape May are doing a bang-up job. 

They’ve replaced all the curbs from Townbank 

to Breakwater and have gotten down the first 

layer of new blacktop with minimal traffic 

disruptions. Of course, that could all change, 

what with the government in charge (the eight

until she turns 21. (KIDDING! We 

love you, Olivia. Happy birthday!) 

Popped into Jake’s in Villas 

for an adult beverage with the wife 

while she wolfed down a crab cake 

sandwich (review: yummy) and, 

while it’s still in mid-renovation, 

the place is coming along. Solid 

vibe, the food looks great and 

they have Tito’s and a bartender 

named Derek to serve it to me. 

What else do you need? Oh, and 

bonus points for giving live music 

a go. Area legend Syndi Raymond 

kicks off their schedule the 16th 

at 6pm. 

Derek and I spent a few 

minutes swapping The Departed 

quotes, which means he is now 

my favorite bartender. Bane, 

Gordon… time to up your game. 

Because I’m the guy that does his

It Out If You Can’t Take It: My Cape 

Island Foods co-worker and local 

man-about-town, Tim Shriver, 

had a very brief, very pointed 

reply to my joke that he was the 

Maria in our Cape Island Foods 

West Side Story. I’d print it here 

if this wasn’t a family-friendly 

publication. I think Tim may have 

misread the underlying point of 

the joke, which is that we all fight 

over him because we love him so 

much. And he looks stunning in 

a white dress while singing “I Feel 

Pretty.” (I look forward to next 

week’s reply. Also, if you want 

to know how things really work 

in Cape May, spend six hours in 

a room with Tim putting lids on 

jars. He knows where all the bodies 

are buried and probably put 

half of them there.) 

I want to like Minx, the yougo-girl, 

don’t-need-no-man HBO 

series about the founding of a 

Playgirl-like magazine in the 70s. 

I really do. It looks great and I like 

Jake Johnson despite the shrieking 

awfulness that was the last season 

of New Girl. But for a show that 

sounds like it was written by a 

bunch of eighth-grade girls after 

reading their first Gloria Steinem 

article, it seems a little too proud 

of itself. But, while not a huge fan 

of anyone’s penis but my own, 

kudos to HBO for flooding the 

zone with ’em. Between this and 

Euphoria I’m not sure the zombie 

corpse of Bob Guccione hasn’t 

taken over the network. 

It’s possible I star-hump 

a little much in this space, but 

it’s only because entertainment 

media has been a huge part of 

my life (lots of alone hours as 

a kid). I love nothing more than 

finding a great “undiscovered” 

show (Newsradio), hearing a great 

song for the first time (Ed Dobbs 

playing “Still Got the Blues” by 

Garry Moore at the Shipwreck 

Saloon in 1995 literally brought 

me to tears) or when the lights go 

down in the theater before a film 

I’ve been anticipating for 10 years 

unspools (Avengers: Endgame). If 

you know, you know. If not, well, I 

feel bad for you. Bruce Willis having 

to step away from his career 

because of illness is awful, and 

grows worse when I realize he’s 

been in my life since I was 15 

feckin’ years old and tuning in 

to Moonlighting. By all accounts, 

a decent man having it all taken 

away. If anyone knows a guy who 

knows a guy, tell him another bald 

singer from Sout’ Jersey sends his 

best and thanks him for all the 

flicks. Except Ocean’s 12.

Franny, my brother, was in Los Angeles 

with his family during the Oscars to 

visit his daughter who moved out 

there a few months back. He hung out 

around the Dolby Theater, where the 

event took place. 

He texted me, “You need to come out 

here one year for the Oscars. It was really 

cool. You’re a movie guy. Even though we 

couldn’t really see anything, it was cool being 

in Hollywood while the Oscars were going on. 

Helicopters were overhead, all the restaurants 

were packed, and people on rooftops were 

trying to catch a glimpse. Ordinary people in 

the street were dressed in gowns and tuxedos. 

It was a carnival atmosphere — all around the 

movies. It was a cool day.” 

My text back, “Yeah not really a ‘bucket 

list’ thing for me. I’m less of a movie guy than 

a big fan of really solid storytelling. I’ve been 

down on the Oscars. I call it ‘from Oscar buzz 

to Oscar bleh.’ But now you got me thinking — 

maybe one day, I’ll go.”

By arts columnist Tom Sims 

praised the film CODA. I said even though it 

was remarkable and outstanding I’d doubt if 

it would win any of the three nominations — 

least of all Best Picture. Wow was I glad to be 

so wrong! And yeah, I was really wrong, I get 

it. But maybe I should say I’m glad Oscar got it 

so right. Finally! 

I really wanted Will Smith to win, and 

still glad he did, but not like that. The whole 

slap seemed staged. It helped viewership. 

More than 16 million watched, up 58% from 

the worst TV audience on record last year. 

His acceptance speech was passionate, but 

it seemed so “Hollywood.” Still, his performance 

in King Richard was exemplary. But his 

action at the Oscars didn’t mirror Richard 

Williams at all. In fact, Chris Rock acted more 

like Williams than Smith, my wife points out. 

In the movie, Williams never struck back when 

harassed. 

How about CODA? It’s the first time a 

streaming service (Apple TV) won an Oscar 

for Best Picture — a sign of things to come, 

for sure. Jane Campion won for Best Director 

(Power of the Dog, its only win out of 12 nominations). 

And Dune mopped up with six wins! 

Amazing! 

Now Franny made the Oscars sound like 

New Orleans during Mardi Gras. New Orleans 

is one of my top five cities in the country, but 

I’m not so sure I want to be there for Mardi 

Gras. Still, his text captured my interest now — 

someday maybe I will go check it out. But I’m 

not rushing to it.

Now is the perfect time to learn bird 

song. There are still few birds singing 

although the number of local 

breeders will expand almost daily 

as more and more species return to 

our region and establish breeding territories. 

I know you promised to do this last year. 

And the year before that. Just do it. Challenge 

yourself to one bird per day. Your reward will 

be a whole new dimension of engagement. 

You can amaze your bridge partners by directing 

their attention to the hurried warbling 

song pouring in from the open window and 

announce “House Finch!” 

Vocalizing birds not only want to be 

heard, but seen, so most vocalists will be sitting 

on some conspicuous perch. Front runners 

include Northern Cardinal whose loud 

“Tew...Tew...Tew...” note is simply repeated, 

sometimes with a variation on the second 

set. Carolina Wren sings “tea-kettle...tea-kettle...tea-kettle.”

American Robin’s song is a loud rising and 

falling series of caroled notes. You can go 

online and Google the songs on the Cornell 

website. But for recollection, nothing beats 

seeing real vocalists in real time. 

You can do it. Can you recognize the cry 

of Laughing Gull? Well, you can use LAGU as 

a stepping stone to learn all the rest. The rules 

don’t change only the length and complexity 

of the vocalizations. Soon you will be saying, 

“well it’s sort of like robin but sweeter sounding 

and more hurried.” Welcome to the cheery 

incantation of Rose-breasted Grosbeak, a bird 

of recovering deciduous forest that will be 

passing through our region in May. The stunning 

rhubarb-bibbed birds may even drop by 

for a snoot full of sunflower seeds, should you 

still be feeding birds in May. Females look like 

bulky female House Finches. The call note, 

too, is easily remembered, sounding much 

like a sneaker squeaked across a gym floor. 

If you take nothing else home from this 

column, note, this: bird calls are short (often 

one note) utterances. Bird songs are longer, 

more complex vocalizations with multiple 

notes. It drives me crazy to hear birders define 

songs as calls. And I am particularly incensed 

when I do it myself. 

But semantics aside, go out and get an 

earful. Listen critically and try to break the 

song down into component parts. One thing 

I can tell you. The more songs you bank in 

memory, the easier it gets.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, try your hand at crocheting! 

Don’t abandon your cozy crafts just 

because the weather is getting 

warmer. Switch up your stitching 

and find a way to be creative while 

keeping your cool. 

Knitting and crocheting are great winter 

crafts because your work-in-progress keeps 

you warm as it grows. That afghan is less 

appealing in the spring. If you’re committed 

to a blanket, consider individual squares 

which are stitched together later. Use up your 

scrap supplies by creating little animals called 

“amigurumi.” If you’re very skilled, consider 

crocheting lace from thread. Smaller projects 

are also satisfying for beginners, which makes 

spring a great time to learn. Try a video tutorial 

— items worked in the round, like fingerless 

gloves or koozies, can be very forgiving. 

Historians can trace knitting to a pair 

of cotton socks purled in 5th century Egypt. 

Crochet is newer, likely evolving in the 16th 

century from “tambour,” a form of Chinese 

needlework in which a background fabric, 

stretched on a frame, is embellished. 

“Tambouring” without the frame, or “hook 

in air” led the French to call the art “crochet.” 

Crocheting is easy to begin, yet skilled artisans 

can create elaborate works. This led to the 

invention of Irish crochet, developed to mimic 

Venetian lace and allowed skilled workers, 

mainly women, to create individual motifs 

like fruit or flowers, which would be joined 

together by beginners to create collars, cuffs 

and other embellishments. Families, mostly 

near Cork, worked on the fine threads, earning 

money to survive the famine. When machine 

lace became available in the 1920s, interest 

in Irish crochet waned, though machines 

still cannot mimic the “otherworldly” patterns 

created by hand. Machine crocheting is still 

impossible giving you a new appreciation for 

items at Cape May craft shows.

A guy, who lives a few blocks away, jogs 

every morning and passes my house at night. 

I never paid much attention to him until I 

noticed a few of my fall plants were missing. 

I thought it was a dog and replaced them, but 

soon, they were gone again. One evening I 

happened to be looking out the window, on 

the lookout for the dog, and I saw this guy 

pulling the mums out. Well, one mum. I 

couldn’t get out fast enough to stop him and 

then the weather turned, and I didn’t see him. 

But spring is here. I don’t want to make a thing

lovely spring plants and put them in. Wait for 

your friend to come by. Try to get him on video 

nabbing your plants. Then have a friendly chat

stop stealing other people’s plants. Ask him 

about his garden. It must be spectacular.

with older children. 

DUCHESS is a sweet eight-year-old girl who 

came to the shelter when her owner could 

no longer care for her. She is happiest when 

snuggling with her human and enjoys playing 

fetch in the yard. Duchess has excellent leash 

skills and knows several behavior cues. She 

would do best in a home with no other dogs 

and a slow introduction to cats.
