Putting a Band-Aid on Diabetes
By: Kyo Mitchell / A Healthier You
In 2004 I took a group of students to study at
the Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese
Medicine in China. We had the fortune of receiving
a lecture from an expert in diabetes named Dr. Chi.
During her lecture, Dr. Chi stated that ten years prior,
Type 2 diabetes was unheard of in China and now it
was growing in epidemic proportions. After making that
statement, she looked at the class and asked, “Can you tell
me why?”
Each and every student knew the answer to the question.
American fast food and processed food had come to China
and it was having a devastating effect.
The CDC reports that in 2022, 130 million Americans are either
diabetic or prediabetic. With a current population of about 332 million
citizens, this means that better than one in three people in America has
or may soon develop diabetes.
During the Covid pandemic, it was stated that those with preexisting
medical conditions were more likely to die from the virus. Diabetes and
obesity, which many times goes hand-in-hand with Type 2 diabetes,
were two of the major medical conditions which could result in
mortality if Covid was contracted.
Yet, when we were told about all of the ways to safeguard ourselves
against Covid – wear a mask, get vaccinated again and again, keep six
feet away from others – the CDC, the WHO or any other government
organization never addressed eating healthier, maintaining a healthy
blood sugar level or losing weight. Why?
There are many drugs out there designed to help those
suffering from Type 2 diabetes, including Metformin,
Victoza, Farxiga and Rybelsus. They may help but they
do not address the root of the problem.
The problem is our diet – what we eat and the way we
eat. I have many patients who ask me if acupuncture or
Chinese herbal medicine has a way of treating Type 2 diabetes.
What they are asking for is a magic pill or treatment to make the
diabetes go away. There is no such miracle cure.
I tell them to see a dietician who specializes in diabetes. That’s their
best hope of a long healthy life.
and Wongu University in Las Vegas for over a decade. Dr. Mitchell
