Young Lego masters excited to be at show
PIECE AFTER piece, hour after
hour, Ladbrooks School pupils
Henry Sculding, Benji Mosley
and Olivia Fryer have chipped
away to build a show-stopping
dragon exhibition ahead of this
year’s Christchurch Brick Show.
The trio – all aged 10 – began
playing with Duplo before
they could walk. This year they
received a gifted learners award
from the Ministry of Education,
providing enough funds to
build their display for this year’s
event.
Using more than 5000 Lego
pieces, they’ve realised their vision
of a tropical island under attack
by dragons. The project has
taken around two months to put
together, with weekly meet-ups
keeping them on track.
“We like to be challenged, to
have a problem that we can solve
with research and by working
together,” Olivia said.
This year the Christchurch
Brick Show is celebrating its
10 th anniversary. It will be held
at Christchurch Arena on
Saturday and Sunday. Oliva,
Benji and Henry are among
more than 250 exhibitors set to
take part.
When deciding on a topic for
their exhibition, dragons were
the obvious choice.
“You can make a good
story with dragons,” says Olivia,
whose specialty includes “free
building” and working on finer
details.
All three are from “Legoobsessed”
families. For Benji,
“doing building challenges”
with his mother and father is a
favourite pastime.
Henry says his father, Simon,
is his main inspiration.
“He’s been building Lego since
I was born.”
In addition to their work on
the project, Benji, Olivia and
Henry run a Lego club at school.
It’s given them the opportunity
to share their passion with other
students.
This term pupils have made
mosaics using Lego dots. Their
pieces will also be on display at
the show this weekend.
Olivia says she’s looking
forward to being amongst other
lego enthusiasts.
“We’re excited to be there and
see other people’s creations. The
quality at the Christchurch Brick
Show is very high.”
