32 Selwyn Times Wednesday July 13 2022 Welcome to West Melton New book from local children’s author West Melton author Alyse Boaz is about to launch her third children’s book within a year, Robot Ted Forgets His Head. Robot Ted gets into all sorts of trouble when he loses his head, leaving behind a trail of disaster. Beautifully written by Alyse and illustrated by artist and cartoonist Robert Scanlan, the book captures the hearts of the old and young alike. Robot Ted Forgets His Head is a fun story with illustrations, rhyme and word repetition to engage children, helping them learn to read. Alyse launched her first picture book, Royal Blue, in August last year. Her second, Sammy the Rooster, was published recently in April and now Robot Ted Forgets His Head is due to come off the printing press. “I started writing Robot Ted years ago,” says Alyse. “I like writing rhyme though it’s not easy. I’d play around with the story, then leave it, then one day, I changed some words, took a beat out of each line and came up with a good ending. It was finished!” She says Royal Blue artist Robert Scanlan was keen to illustrate Robot Ted Forgets His Head. “He surprised me with how quickly he produced the fantastic illustrations. ADVERTISING HopE pRESbyTERIAN WEST MElToN Supporting the Community Hope Presbyterian is a network of four churches including Hornby, Rolleston, West Melton and Halkett. Everyone is welcome to attend Hope Presbyterian church services and activities. Singing, praising, fellowship, learning, activities, service, food, and more surround those who attend this vibrant pillar of the community. West Melton Church services start every Sunday at 9:30am. Halkett church services are held on the first Sunday of every month, at 11am at 662 Halkett Rd. Hope West Melton has just officially opened their remodelled church at 726 Weedons Ross Rd. They are enjoying this larger, newer space which better accommodates all their activities. Hope runs a range of programmes for various groups in the community - youth, men, women, young mums, seniors, couples. For example, every Thursday at 9.30am, Hope runs Mainly Music. This is a programme for mums from the community to connect and for their young children to play together. For youth, there is an activities night every Friday; every second Sunday evening there is a youth service. Both of these are open to all. Pastor Mark Ambundo is a caring, inspired, motivational leader who migrated with his wife six years ago from Kenya where he also worked as a pastor. He and his wife have enjoyed their Kiwi experience and now call New Zealand home. Over the past years they have expanded their family which now includes two young children. Hope has a youth pastor, whose role is to support young people both in the church and in the community. These young people have developed genuine friendships, and show a desire to love and serve others. Hope seeks to provide a safe place for friendship and support, learning, personal growth, and inner connection with your beliefs and values. A relaxed farmers market, it focuses on providing a laid-back, family-friendly and pet- friendly atmosphere, rain or shine, with live music setting the tone for the duration of the market. Tables and chairs are provided for marketgoers to sit down, enjoy some hot food, coffee and a catch up with friends and neighbours.
