Whakaata Mai te Kūkūwai: Reflections
from the Wetlands Exhibition
To July 31
The Whakaata mai te Kūkūwai exhibition
celebrates the special Ngāi Tahu
relationship with wetlands. Selwyn is rich
with wetlands that are full of biodiversity,
and significant to Ngāi Tahu as a source
of mahinga kai. Despite many wetlands
being destroyed or modified, whānau
continue these food-gathering practices
today. This exhibition opened June 15.
It highlights the work of Ngāi Tahu and
local communities to restore wetlands for
future generations through photographs,
video, stories, and taonga. Free, bookings
not required.

GLOBALLY MOTHS can
vary greatly in size from
the giant Hercules moth
(Coscinocera hercules)
with a 27cm wingspan to
the minute moth called
Stigmella ridiculosa with
2mm wingspan.
At the smaller end of the
range Leuroperna sera has
a wingspan of 10mm. This
relatively common species
is very similar to the
diamond back moth but
can be distinguished by
genitalia and wing width.
Leuroperna sera is
thought to be selfintroduced
to New
Zealand, and also found in
Australia, India, Indonesia,
Sri Lanka, Vietnam and
Taiwan.
According to
iNaturalist, it is mainly
found in the North
Island, with the specimen
I found in Lincoln
Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology
(insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces
a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His
column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the

The moth is a light
brown to grey with a
dark brown up-pointed
triangular patch on edge
forewing.
Antennae are usually
forward pointing and are
long, cream coloured apart
from three to four darker
markings along them.
Larvae reach 10mm
in length and are green
to yellow and head has
blackish to brown dots.
They feed on crucifers
including mustards,
cabbage, cauliflower, rape,
turnip, radish and possibly
watercress.
Pupae occur in a white,
open mesh-like cocoon on
the underside of leaves.
Leuroperna sera is found
in vegetable gardens,
cultivated areas and forest
edges.
