Whakaata Mai te Kūkūwai: Reflections
from the Wetlands Exhibition
To July 31
The Whakaata mai te Kūkūwai exhibition
celebrates the special Ngāi Tahu
relationship with wetlands. Selwyn is rich
with wetlands that are full of biodiversity,
and significant to Ngāi Tahu as a source
of mahinga kai. Despite many wetlands
being destroyed or modified, whānau
continue these food-gathering practices
today. This exhibition opened June 15.
It highlights the work of Ngāi Tahu and
local communities to restore wetlands for
future generations through photographs,
video, stories, and taonga. Free, bookings
not required.
Country charm
close to the city
West Melton has become increasingly
diverse and grown exponentially in recent
years as more people discover its charms.
An easy commute to the city, a vibrant
community and a country lifestyle are
features that make West Melton a great
place to live, work and play.
The shopping centre, with its spacious
parking area, is at the heart of the
township and has everything you need
on a daily basis including supermarket,
physiotherapist, beauty salon,
hair salon, cafes, bakery,
medical centre, pharmacy,
and much more. Plus, the
local school, preschools,
community hall, tavern, fuel
station and churches are all
centrally based too, making
everything within easy
walking distance.
There are plenty of
recreational opportunities
too, with the Wilfield
subdivision nearby offering
delightful walks among the
West Melton
reserve areas, a tennis court, basketball
hoop, and playground. With the rapid
growth of West Melton, the community
has risen to meet the needs of its residents
with a range of interest and sports groups
to take part in, including a New Friends in
the Village group.
If you’re looking for a change of scenery
or a new area to live, then take a drive
to West Melton and check out what the
GLOBALLY MOTHS can
vary greatly in size from
the giant Hercules moth
(Coscinocera hercules)
with a 27cm wingspan to
the minute moth called
Stigmella ridiculosa with
2mm wingspan.
At the smaller end of the
range Leuroperna sera has
a wingspan of 10mm. This
relatively common species
is very similar to the
diamond back moth but
can be distinguished by
genitalia and wing width.
Leuroperna sera is
thought to be selfintroduced
to New
Zealand, and also found in
Australia, India, Indonesia,
Sri Lanka, Vietnam and
Taiwan.
According to
iNaturalist, it is mainly
found in the North
Island, with the specimen
I found in Lincoln
Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology
(insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces
a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His
column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the
variety of living things around us. Check out the full list
