What those affected have to say..
drummond & etheridge Branch
Manager Murray Chesterman says,
“As a business, we are concerned. The
proposed four lanes on Jones Rd outside
our door will have an impact on how
customers can access our business;
the issue of accessibility needs to be
discussed further. In the current plan,
we may not be able to exit our site onto
Jones Road. Another serious concern
is the safety issue with large truck and
trailer units turning into our business
across a proposed cycleway. With new
big box retail also coming to the area, it is
important that the connectivity between
Rolleston and Izone is done right. The
current proposition includes numerous
sets of lights close together, and this will
likely add to congestion and doesn’t fully
future-proof Rolleston. Another challenge
for wider discussion is the motorway is
proposed to remain one lane both north
and south through Rolleston”.
diesel fix owner Phil says, “Traffic
flow will be impacted; it all depends
on where and how traffic will be
redirected, but it’s horrendous at
peak times anyway. We have all
dealt with never-ending road works
over the last five years. It needs to
be sorted sooner rather than later,
especially at the rate Rolleston and
the Izone are growing. We are quite
specialised so customers who need
to come to us, still will and eventually
it will create more traffic flow so it
may benefit the businesses on Jones
Road. I haven’t heard a thing from
New Zealand Transport; however, I
feel they have listened and have gone
back and changed the plans after
businesses on Jones Road protested.
They will never keep everyone happy.
However, I do feel for the businesses
in direct line to where the overpass is
proposed to be going.”
Rolleston diesel & Petrol owner Simon Wilson says,
“Are Rolleston people going to benefit from it? They’ve
got to sort out the motorway flow problem and go from
there. They need to look around the surrounding areas,
as fixing one problem can actually create a problem in
other places. It is a Band-Aid fix and is not looking ahead.
All the agencies like the council, NZTA and Railways
need to plan the work together and also talk with the
community. Planning and communication with everyone
is lacking, and no agency has come to talk with me. I
don’t think the video is clear about what is going on.”
gayle’s foodbar owner Gayle says, “All proposals are
going to affect us. They need to realise how difficult it will
be to get back, and by closing off these entranceways
and exits, it is forcing you to go further afield, which will
not help with the amount of traffic down Jones Road. I
don’t feel it is addressing all the problems that have been
created. Getting in and out of Rolleston is a problem with a
single lane and needs to be double lanes. There are things
that haven’t been fully thought out. They are not going to
come all the way over here to my shop if it takes them 15-
20 minutes to get back to where they’ve come from.”
