Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: Ocean 7 at the Inn of Cape May, formerly Aleathea’s on
Beach and Ocean Avenues in Cape May.
The vibe: We snagged a lovely table on the porch overlooking the
lawn with a beautiful view of the ocean. It was HOT, but we enjoyed a
cool breeze. There are still a few renovations still outstanding (a downstairs
bar), but it’s looking great as things come together. The porch
outside is beautiful with a bar just inside and they’ve placed rocking
chairs across the lawn along with a few tables for more seating for the
restaurant. With a prime location and blend of good food, accommodations
and a kind and attentive staff, we look forward to what’s to come.
The conversation: Throughout lunch, we got on the topic of the
afterlife, psychics and mediums. You know the people — one minute
you’re out minding your own business, and the next, a stranger is telling
you about your late aunt who’s standing over you going on about
a necklace you’re wearing that came from her. Well, Jack shared a
wild story about a friend of his named Craig who was overcome with
a female presence near a neighboring table once while out to dinner.
Turned out, it was the late mother and daughter of the woman at the
table, letting her know they were okay. Tears were shed — how could
he possibly know this about a woman he’s never met? We say skeptics
be damned.
The food: We tried a few different menu items including three
watermelon and feta salads, a southern fried chicken sandwich and
seafood chowder with shrimp. Everything tasted super fresh, and it was
delicious — not a drop of food was left behind. We definitely see a second
visit in our future.
The goodbye: Friday was Exit Zero marketing intern Emma’s last
day. We treated her to lunch in celebration and can’t thank her enough
for hopping aboard our crazy train. She was a huge help to us this summer
and we will miss her dearly. Emma is headed into her junior year at
West Virginia University, and we wish her the best... come back soon!

Undertow
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
Undertow: A pox on both your monkeys!
The comically huge mountains
of dirty laundry I face down
every Sunday morning would be
hilarious if they didn’t fill me with
such existential dread. I keep waiting for
Gollum to club me and try to steal my ring.
A missed turn and quick recovery
Thursday morning might not be a big deal to
YOU, but with about 1500 loose copies of Exit
Zero stacked on your front seat, it’s a catastrophe.
A paper-mountain landslide. I half-expected
Gollum to club me and try to steal my
ring. (Sorry, I’m kind of listless this week.)
It was 86 degrees by 10am Thursday,
which should be illegal. It was so hot I could
feel the AC billowing out of the Cape May-
Lewes Ferry terminal from about 30-feet in
front of the door. Isn’t this interesting? As I
said, listless. Also, don’t mock people who
believe in God if you believe government
spending will lower the temperature.
I’m listless, but Paula Bistak said something
I wrote last week was “brilliant” and
who am I to argue with the savviest readers
in the world?
Sorry, Hawk Haven, I know I usually
deliver your magazines right to your door,
but I wasn’t going to run the gauntlet of lawn
sprinklers that were on when I got there. I
SHOULD have run that gauntlet (86 degrees
by 10am), but I didn’t because I’m dead inside.
(Enjoying my humor column so far?)
Joker 2 being a musical starring Lady Gaga
as Harley Quinn opposite Joaquin Phoenix’s
titular clown prince of crime is the kind of
batshit crazy energy we deserve right now.
Quote of the Week: From Jim Faulkner.
“I’m not just saying this to get in your column,
but you were hilarious up there.” Oh,
Jim. You dirty liar. Thank you. And the “up
there” in question was on stage at Ferry Park
where I emcee the goings-on and whatnots
on Big Wednesday! (The exclamation point
means we’re serious.) Big Wednesday is
a day-long jubilee over at Ferry Park with
live music, games and drink specials from
2 to 11pm. On the 17th we have the Legacy
Band 5:30-8:30pm on the big stage playing
high-energy dance tunes that’ll get your juicy
booty shakin’, and not only will I be hosting,
but the Terry O’Brien Trio will be playing
the pre-and-post game parties (2-5:30pm,
8:30-11pm). It’s Big! It’s Wednesday! IT’S BIG
WEDNESDAY! (Exclamation point!)
Not only did Jim ambush me with his
compliment, but there has been a dozen people
over the last few weeks who have introduced
themselves. Usually, but not always,
with a kind word. Which sounds about right.
Last week, the Englishtown Project

(Grateful Dead, New Riders of
the Purple Sage, Marshall Tucker
Band, etc) sure brought out the
tie-dye and patchouli lot. I had no
idea there were so many commie
pinko bastards in Cape May.
Restroom of the Week: I went
off the beaten path this week and
made a pit stop at Uncle Bill’s
in North Cape May. While the
decor is a little spartan for my
taste (give me an Iron Man decal
or “Hang in there!” kitty poster
all day long), it was impeccably
clean and aromatic. For a while.
Made acquaintances with
Tom and Marguerite Clancy
(and third wheel Bobby) at Ferry
Station. This is notable mostly
because she is the second person
I’ve ever met with the name
Marguerite. (It is my sister Erin’s
middle name.) What does this
make them? Name twins? Namelgangers?
Weirdos?
During a bout of insomnia
last Friday, I put on director Denis
Vilanueve’s Enemy, starring Jake
Gyllenhall and forgot it has the
scariest f*cking ending of any
movie ever made. Got the heart
going, didn’t do much for the
insomnia.
I haven’t said much about the
Phillies because I don’t want to
jinx anything (they’re going to
win the World Series… OOPS!)
but it may be time to stop dragging
out the 1980 team on alumni
weekend every year. Especially
now that they finally got Pete
Rose in for one. It’s… it’s time.
WCFA 101.5 Songs of the
Week: “Sitting Still” by R.E.M.
and “Annie Get Your Gun” by
Squeeze. Two finer examples
of the art form you’d be hardpressed
to find. The Phantom DJ
has been knocking it out of the
park lately.
Bartender of the Week: Mark
Haibach who mans the coolers at
Ferry Park on Big Wednesdays.
He puts in about 10 miles a night
running back and forth to the
fridge, restocking beers, wines
and canned cocktails that sit in
an ice bath then glisten in the
sun, sparkling beads of perspiration
running down their sides…
sorry. I’m just really thirsty.
This is a good time for Better
Call Saul to end because there ain’t
no hair and make-up gonna keep
these guys looking 35 years old.
Unpopular Opinion of the
Week: I watched the Dear Evan
Hansen movie on HBO the other
night and… it wasn’t bad? I never
saw the musical (fun fact: the
last Broadway production I was
Sarah Jessica Parker in Once Upon
a Mattress in 1996 and the one
before that was Crazy For You in
1993 and before that was nothing)
so I don’t have a frame of
reference, but the songs were
catchy and the acting was fine.
The kid playing 18-year-old Evan
Hansen looks about 37, but this
is the same industry that gave us
40-year-old Barbra Streisand as a
16-year-old in Yentl.
If you’ll recall, last week I
noted that I will be singing every
day from August 11 to 23 (with a
memorial service for my larynx
on August 24). What I failed to
realize is that with all my jobs
combined — singing, delivering,
writing, emceeing — I will be
working every day from August
7 to September 4. MY NEXT
DAY OFF IS AFTER LABOR DAY.
Just… what… why… how do
these things happen? Anyway, if
you see me at any time between
these dates, don’t ask, just get me
a Diet Coke. Or vodka.
Lastly, if you’re visiting our
town for the first or the fiftieth
time, please bear in mind that
every store and restaurant you
visit is woefully understaffed
and hanging by a thread, praying
they make it to September where
they can take a bit of a breather.
So, don’t yell at hostesses and
cashiers for things they have
no control over. And if you’re a
cashier or hostess, bear in mind
we’re less than a month away
from Locals’ Summer. Try not to
kill anyone before we get there.
’Til next week, don’t get
caught in The Undertow.

New Show At SOMA
The NewArt Gallery announces fourth art exhibition of the 2022 season
SOMA NewArt Gallery announces its
fourth art exhibition of the 2022 season,
featuring three regional solo artists.
“Things I Saw on the Way to the
Beach” by Rye Tippett, “Within Reach”
by Sharon Cosgrove and “The Venus File” by
Richard Samuelson will be on display August
20 to September 18.
Tippett received his formal training in
illustration and design at the Art Institute
of Philadelphia and works in an oil glazing
technique using thin layers of color in a wash
over a toned under painting. Cosgrove is an
award-winning artist whose work explores
classic themes of time, nature, balance and
stillness. Samuelson uses traditional and digital
techniques together into what seems to be a
deep and true creative partnership in his work.
Art lovers are invited to attend an Opening
Artist Reception on Saturday, August 20 from
6 to 9pm. SOMA is located at 31 Perry Street
in Carpenters Square Mall, Cape May. For
more information, please contact the gallery by
emailing stevesomagallery@gmail.com.
“The Feral” by Rye Tippett and more can be seen at the gallery beginning August 20.

The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
Let’s start with a full disclosure. I dabble
in the stock market. I’ll buy a couple
shares here, a few there. I’m no
Warren Buffet, but it’s like betting on
a horse race. Oh no…I just lost the
animal welfare readers, right? I’m sorry but
when you can get 80-to-one odds on a horse,
and win…well, I’m in.
Okay enough about that. Back to the full
disclosure. Just yesterday, I bought a couple
shares of Netflix. Look up the value and do
the math… it wasn’t cheap (but it wasn’t way
too expensive either). And full disclaimer now
too! I’m not and never will be a stock advisor!
Nothing I say about stocks would (or should)
be taken seriously. When EF Hutton talks,
people listen. When I talk about investments,
people need to take that with a proverbial
grain of salt.
So why am I saying all of this, and how
does this even remotely have to do with a
movie review? Let’s start with a preview.
Netflix has some seriously anticipated
releases coming soon. Lost Ollie is an animated
feature that might compare to Toy Story.
That’s a big deal coming from a guy who puts
the Toy Story franchise in his top ten movies of
all freakin’ time!
Another ambitious film Netflix is releasing
is a take on the Pinocchio story as told by
Oscar winning director Guillermo del Toro.
Let’s talk Oscar while we’re at it. Seventeen
Netflix originals have gotten nearly 100 Oscar
nominations over only a few years. Feature
films, documentaries, shorts… you name it.
Netflix is a solid corporation that’s not
going anywhere. Subscriptions are down on
the streaming side of their business. That’s
what likely caused their stock prices to plummet,
making my purchase even possible.
They’re trying to tighten up on those subscriptions.
Hey, my kids use my account to
watch Netflix, and we don’t live in the same
household. Yikes, I hope Netflix isn’t reading
this. Don’t come after me!
But what about the studio side? After I
saw the trailers mentioned and recent movies
like Hustle, I looked to see what was in the
pipeline of new movies coming out in 2022.
What a long list! They’ll get their subscription
side under control, but the studio is fired up!
So, is Netflix a longshot? Isn’t everything? I’m
hoping to see great things.
We haven’t done a prize drawing in a
while. For a gift card of your choice, be the
first to email flixyoumissed@gmail.com with
the name of the film for which Guillermo del
Toro won his Oscar. No peeking online now!
FOR A GOOD TIME,
GO UNDERGROUND.

Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
My neighbor Peter, a ranger
at Corson’s Inlet State Park,
informed me the other day that
Sanderling were back on the
beaches. Visitors know them as
“sandpipers,” and delight in their wave-chasing
antics. Most assume the birds nest here.
Wrong on two counts. The birds breed in
the High Arctic, and they deposit their eggs
in shallow scrapes on the tundra. So, what
are they doing here, now? Migrating. Nesting
season is done for the year, these adults,
still showing traces of rust-colored breeding
plumage about the head and neck are heading
south. Some will remain here for the winter;
others may travel to the tip of South America.
What determines which birds stay
and which move on? Nobody knows, but
Sanderlings have one of the longest and narrowest
longitudinal wintering ranges on the
planet, relegated as they are to sandy beaches
from Long Island to Tierra del Fuego. These
early arrivals are failed breeders, birds that
failed to find mates or whose nesting effort
ended in failure. In the Arctic, there is no time
for second chances. A failed effort means
an early ticket south. Next to arrive are successful
breeders, one of the adult pairs. With
young able to fend for themselves shortly after
hatching, there is no need for both adults to
guard the kids from predators. One of these
pugnacious birds is enough to guard the kids
from foxes, falcons and jaegers. Ma or pa
call the alarm and the kids freeze, defeating
hunting eyes with their cryptic natal plumage
which will be replaced by fully functional
feathers in time for young to start south in
August. How they know where to go and
when to stop is a mystery. But this staggered
migration means that adults and young can
use the same migratory stop-over sites and
not compete for food. So, as you marvel at
these tireless bundles of energy racing along
the beach, now you have just one more marvel
to contemplate. Imagine flying nonstop from
Baffin Island and still have energy to race
down the beach.
As much a part of the shore experience as
surf and salt laden air, the birds of the Jersey
shore continue to delight our senses, kindle
our imaginations, and serve as subjects on
coasters, place mats, dish towels and lamp
shades. So, the next time you contemplate
those tiny sandpipers, appreciate them for
the wonders they are, birds whose wings knit
hemispheres and grace us with their presence
for a few weeks every summer as they travel to
and from the ends of the earth.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, play some beach games!
What do you do at the beach when
you can’t be in the water? Play
a game that requires only the
“equipment” you can find on the
beach. No cost, no carry — just a
little ingenuity and a lot of competition.
Though we evolved to rely on cooperation,
humans also thrive on competition. It’s said
that we invented racing when we realized we
didn’t have to outrun the lioness, just the other
people running from her. My father always
asserted that the Irish invented competitive
athletics, citing the Tailteann Games of 1600
BCE as evidence. The Tailteann Games were
funeral rites to mark the passing of important
people. The first day — or group of days,
depending on the importance of the deceased
— was a day of mourning; the second, a day
of governance; and the third, a series of mental
and physical challenges, mostly involving
running. (The Egyptians probably held a similar
festival 1000 years before the Irish, and
there was a little thing called the Olympics
over in Greece, but let’s not let facts get in
the way of my father’s stories.) Held in late
July, the Tailteann Games also featured songs,
stories, and an ancient version of “Married at
First Sight” — a mass marriage of people who
just met, who pledged to live together for a
year. After that, if they didn’t suit, each was
free to choose another partner.
You don’t need to make that kind of commitment
when you choose partners for your
Beach Games. You just have to decide some
basic rules. Hold a footrace by drawing start
and finish lines with your toes; or set up a
relay, mixing the speedy in your group with
the slow. Or, when you see the dolphins, run
along the sand and race them to the jetty. If
you’ve got a lone kid, time her as she runs
from point to point — kids usually love to
beat the clock. Play a clamshell version of
horseshoes — draw two circles with holes in
the center about 20 feet apart, stand at the
opposite circle and try to get your clamshell
in the hole. Score one point for landing in
the circle, two for hanging the shell on the lip
of the hole, and three for getting it into the
hole. Play musical “chairs” with beach towels.
Draw a tic-tac-toe board in the sand. Create
an obstacle course by digging a small ditch,
building a small hill, and — if they are game
— recruiting aunts and uncles to serve as
obstacles. Draw a tightrope or a balance beam
and see if your cartwheel holds up.
Be considerate of other beach goers, and
don’t be surprised if they want to challenge
you. Have fun!

The Answer Lady invites inquiries from
gentle readers on all manner of relationship
quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
My aunt, who is also my godmother, and I
have always been close. For 20 years she’s been
telling me I’m in her will. Not too long ago, an
issue came up in the family about whether or
not to sell my grandmother’s house. As my
own mother died a few years ago, I am the heir
as well as my aunt and my uncle. He and I want
to sell the house and she does not. She has
refused to sign an agreement of sale and now
threatens to cut me out of the will unless I agree
with her. My aunt is ridiculously sentimental
about the past. Yes, she was raised in that
house, but she does not live in it now. Nor will
she spend any money to make it rentable. She
is very wealthy, and I am wondering if I should
acquiesce. What do you think? — Cornered
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Dear Cornered
The Answer Lady does not know your
financial circumstances, but she cringes at this
threat. Consider this, if you acquiesce, she will
use it against you in every situation in which
her opinion differs from her sibling or when
she wants you to do something you prefer not
to do. So, weigh your decision carefully. It’s not
just about the house. Sounds like you need an
ice cream cone at Kohr Brothers on the Mall.
Dear Answer Lady
My wife and I had dinner at a pretty nice
restaurant, but everything was horrible except
the service. We waited an hour for our meal and
then my filet was overcooked, and my wife’s
crab cake was miniscule for the price. The bill
was unbelievably out of line with the quality of
food. Now here’s where my wife and I disagree.
I wanted my dissatisfaction to be reflected
in the tip. I’m sorry — the tip reflects not just
good service but a good experience. My wife
begged me not to punish the one person who
made the evening tolerable. I left 15 percent
and told the server why. What would you have
done? — Disgruntled Diner
Dear Disgruntled
It seems you reached a fair compromise.
However, if you want to make your point, you
should have asked to speak to the manager
and threaten a Yelp review, emphasizing your
lovely server paid the price. Meanwhile, erase
that experience from your mind and make a
reservation at a farm-to-table dinner at Beach
Plum Farm.

ARIES is a large boy who was came to the
shelter when his owners could no longer keep
him. Once he is comfortable, he loves socializing
and attention. Tennis balls are Aries’
favorite toys and loves to play fetch. His leash
skills are improving, and he already responds
well to “sit.” Aries would be best in an adult
home as the only pet in the house.
LUCAS is a young dog who came to the shelter
when he became a bitch much for his family’s
four children. He has some fear-based behaviors
so, he needs a slow introduction to new
people and situations. Lucas is still learning
behavior cues and improving his leash skills,
but he would make a wonderful companion to
a family willing to continue his training.
NINA is an 11-year-old girl who is looking for
a home. She is a sweet and spunky girl for her
age and had a very loving owner. He passed
away and she came to the shelter as a result.
Nina loves to snuggle and has excellent leash
manners. Nina is comfortable with dogs and
cats and is looking forward to a loving family
taking her home.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
PHEOBE came to the shelter from a hoarder
house, starving and very neglected. She is a
beautiful princess after her time in the shelter
and ready for a new home. Pheobe would be
good in a home with other cats, dogs and children.
She loves attention and playing with her
toys. If interested in adopting this girl, contact
the shelter.
TAFFY came to the shelter as one of seven
cats who lived in horrific conditions with a
hoarder, although he meant well. The cats
were found very scared, but sweet and needing
a lot of love. A quiet home would be best
for Taffy, who is also four years old. She is up
to date on all vaccinations and spayed. Taffy
would do well in a home with other cats.
RICHIE is a sweet girl who would make the
perfect house cat. She is an eight-year-old
polite and gentle feline and an ideal first pet
for a family. Richie is good with other cats,
dogs and children. She is very friendly and
loves to explore new surroundings. Richie is
up to date on all vaccinations and spayed. If
interested, please contact the shelter.
