4 YOUR NEW GWSA BOARD FOR 2022/2023 At a special orientation Board meeting held July 27, 2022, for returning and new Board members, your new Board for 2022 and 2023 was nominated, accepted the nomination, and elected as follows: President/Chair of the Board – Pat Gage Vice-President/Vice-Chair – Donna Keating Treasurer – Sam Marzouk Secretary – Brooke Gibbons (City Recreational Co-ordinator) Executive Director – Linda Jeffery Directors: Charlie Bishop, Ken Fugler, Wenda King, Sam Montoya, Janice Robertson, Elizabeth Steggles, Yvonne Thomas Adam Rutherford – City Program Manager Your new Board is looking forward to a successful year for GWSA by working for and with you throughout the following year. GWSA Email Updates Each month, approximately mid-month, the Membership and Marketing Committee at the GWSA sends out the GWSA Email Update. It highlights a few of the exciting things happening at the GWSA and important communications from the Board. You can subscribe to receive the GWSA Email Update by completing the steps below: 1. To begin, please send an email to: subscribe@gwsa-guelph.ca. You can enter Subscribe in the Subject line, or just skip that part, it will work either way. In just a few minutes, you will receive a message with a link. 2. Click on the link you received, fill in the appropriate fields, and click “Subscribe to List”. 3. To ensure you really want to receive GWSA Email Updates – and to make sure all emails are error-free – we’ll send a message asking you to confirm. 4. Once you respond to the confirmation message, your registration is complete and you’ll receive our Welcome Letter. You can also subscribe using the Email Update input form at the bottom of any page on the GWSA website at gwsa-guelph.ca. You can expect to receive your first GWSA Email Update approximately mid-month after you sign up. You can unsubscribe from the GWSA Email Updates at any time by clicking on the “unsubscribe” link that is displayed at the bottom of every update. 5 THE EDITOR’S PAGE by Linda Green WHAT NOT TO SAY TO A CANADIAN Anything in a fake Canadian accent. One of the worst Canadian insults? Putting on a fake Canadian accent. That’s not to say we don’t have our own unique way of speaking, it’s just that we're a lot more Wayne Gretzky than Doug Mackenzie. “A-boot.” It’s true what they say about accents: everyone has one and you can’t always hear your own, but this whole business about Canadians saying a-boot instead of about is just confusing. So, don’t say a-boot unless you want to get kicked by one. Disparaging comments about hockey. Be careful before you utter a disparaging remark about a hockey player or team in Canada - a seemingly innocent comment can quickly turn into one of the most offensive Canadian insults. So when it comes to insulting the sport of hockey, just don’t do it, unless you really want to see the gloves come off. “Canada is the 51st U.S. state.” Canada is not the same country as the United States. Everyone in Canada knows this, which is why it’s so frustrating when people around the world don’t seem to realize that our home isn’t simply the 51st state of the U.S. Their confusion is somewhat understandable: Canada and the U.S. are such strong allies and many Canadian celebrities hop the border to find success in Hollywood. “Canadian beer is awful.” It’s not that we can’t take the criticism or that our taste buds are numbed by years of drinking “moose urine,” as the Americans like to call it, it’s simply that we don't understand why a nation of light beer guzzlers think they have the right to insult Canadian beer (or German, Polish, British or Japanese beer, for that matter). It’s a bit like someone who grew up on cheese-in-a-can screwing up their nose at free-range, organic chèvre. If you don’t know how beer is supposed to taste, please keep your comments to yourself. “Cheese and gravy? Ew.” If you're ordering fries and you’re asked if you’d like poutine instead, your answer should always be yes. For the uninitiated, poutine is a common Canadian dish that consists of french fries topped with squeaky cheese curds and gravy. The only real Canadian insult is opting for boring old french fries when you can indulge in a true Canadian delicacy! Special Printing For Members Do you have a need for printing (i.e., bookmarks, booklets, calendars, dinner menus/programs, club bylaws, annual reports), large or small quantities, black & white print (10¢ per page) or colour (30¢ per page)? If so, please contact Carol Croft or Linda Green, either in the Sentinel office (we’re not here all the time, though) or by email at sentinel@gwsaguelph.ca, or leave a message at the front desk. You must be a GWSA member to take advantage of this. We will try to accommodate you with your project as much as we can.
