Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Gaiss’ Market on Bayshore Road in the Villas. This onestop 

shop has just about everything you’re looking for — grocery items, 

fresh meat from their butcher, house-made salads, dips, and sauces, 

and then there is the reason this column is about them this week. Gaiss’ 

offers a delicious range of hoagies and sandwiches to order for lunch 

or dinner. 

The store: The moment you step inside, there are shelves full of different 

products. These include greeting cards, snacks, and cold drinks 

in a range of sizes. Start heading toward the back of the market and 

you’ll find their deli where you can purchase fresh-cut lunch meat and 

cheeses, pre-packaged meats as well as select cuts of beef, chicken and 

pork. Gaiss’s also carries fresh produce, breads, and frozen goods. Then 

you have their grocery section — non-perishables, paper towels, toilet 

paper, sanitizing wipes... really anything you might be looking for. 

They also carry pastries — specifically sticky buns — from Piece of Cake 

in Cape May Courthouse. We skipped the sweets this time, but that is 

definitely some good news for the future. 

The food: It was a busy weekend of travel and cleaning for Nicole 

and Dan so, we couldn’t wait to grab some takeout and call it a day. 

Gaiss’ was on the menu since Friday, so we were very prepared when 

it was time to order. Dan went for a classic cheesesteak with fried 

onions and Nicole enjoyed a chicken cheesesteak. While waiting, 

Nicole notices a refrigerator full of macaroni, pasta and, potato salads 

and even some house-made pickles. She couldn’t help but grab a small 

container of cheese tortellini pasta salad. It was well worth it and the 

portion size made for a perfect side. We also grabbed a cold Coke and 

Arizona Iced tea from their selection. Gaiss’ has quite a bit of anything 

so while you may ponder for a moment, you’ll always find something! 

The takeaway: Gaiss’ Market is open Mon-Fri from 9am-6pm and 

Sat-Sun 8am-6pm. Grab some lunch and while you’re at it, grab some 

household necessities. This local market has it all!

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence 

I 

remember when Michael Vick finished 

serving his time and was looking to 

return to the NFL to resume his career, 

I was among those who said, “He did his 

crime, he served his time, he should be 

allowed a second chance to make a living at 

his occupation of choice.” I never in a million 

years thought he would sign with MY team. 

But here I was. I imagine this is how they felt 

on Martha’s Vineyard for 24 hours last week. 

Remember when the thing everyone was 

mad at was a U2 album being installed on 

their phone? Quaint times. 

I write to you this week a scant few hours 

before I haul my boys up to Top Golf in Mt 

Laurel to celebrate Owen Freedom O’Brien’s 

21st birthday. I know... 21! Seems impossible 

since I’m still 27, but who am I to argue with 

science? Now that he’s on that grown-up twojob 

grind (peanut butter grinder at Cape Island 

Foods, food server at Hugh at the Jardin) he 

can’t WAIT to get back to college (AMDA in 

New York) in January. And we can’t WAIT for 

him to go back! Lol… just kidding, we love 

having Owen here to boss around. 

The magazine has been coming in around 

midnight on Wednesdays now so I’ve been 

delivering around 4-7am, which is great 

because there’s no traffic and, if I catch the 

lights, I can shave 15-20 minutes off my delivery 

time. It’s not so great for seeing and hearing 

interesting things to write about or WCFA 

songs to alert you to because they play the 

Terry O’Brien Delivery Block from 7-11am. 

So, it’s really pretty boring. Which I believe I 

have translated successfully into this column. 

I’ve seen an encouraging uptick in the 

number of people wearing Brooks sneakers 

this summer. I see at least a half-dozen pairs a 

night shuffle past me as I sing at Exit Zero. This 

makes me happy, like when I was the first person 

I knew to cut the cord and go all-streaming 

about 10 years ago then convinced all my 

friends to do it, proselytizing only slightly less 

aggressively than a Scientologist. However, 

if I see you wearing Skechers, I’m going to 

assume you’ve given up. 

At first I thought Jack Wright lost a 

bunch of weight when I saw him at EZ Friday 

night. Turns out he just trimmed his beard. 

Definitely didn’t lose any weight. (FYI, the 

number of pounds I have to lose by New Year’s 

Eve has dropped from the mid-to-upper 30s 

to mid-30s. Baby steps.) 

I recently completed all my scheduled 

2022 gigs (that’s the year, not the number 

of gigs, though sometimes it felt like 2022 

gigs) with “Cosmic” Charlie Wigo and I 

can say with a high degree of certainty that 

there’s probably not a nicer guy making the 

rounds of the Cape May music circuit. The

have busted so many balls over 

the years. My body is ready. 

A giant spider has covered my 

back door with an enormous web 

and has scattered the carcasses of 

his enemies across my back porch 

as an (successful) intimidation 

tactic. If another one covers my 

front door, I will just not be able 

to leave my house. Send Tito’s. 

I was enjoying several glorious 

hours at home alone (Henry 

in school, Owen, Jackson and 

Cathrine at work) and spending 

some, uh, leisure time in the bathroom, 

when, suddenly, somebody 

knocked on the door and, well, 

let’s just say it was lucky I was on 

the toilet. (Henry had snuck in to 

retrieve his football uniform.) 

Where does Captain Kirk 

workout? At the…wait for it… 

Dammit Gym! (I’ll see myself 

out.) 

I am not being hyperbolic 

when I say that Primal (Adult 

Swim, HBO Max) by Genndy 

Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack, 

Powerpuff Girls) might be the 

best show on television. A dialogue-free 

master class in lean, 

muscular storytelling. It’s perfect. 

I have reached the point 

where I’m buying and reading 

Jack Reacher novels without 

remembering if I’ve bought and 

read them already, and that’s 

okay because they’re all good. But 

they’re really just place keepers 

until the new Robert Crais comes 

out (November 1). If you know, 

you know. 

The Black Phone is a nifty little 

horror-thriller on Peacock that is 

better than it has any right to be. 

And, while I don’t hold a high 

degree of sympathy for millionaire 

movie stars on the decline, it 

has been nice to see the late-career 

resurgence of Ethan Hawke 

(Moon Knight). 

Lastly this week, for 10 weeks 

in the summer of 2019, for four 

hours every Sunday night, I had 

the time of my life fronting the 

first version of the Terry O’Brien 

Band. One set of Beatles, one set 

of Billy Joel, one set of Bruce. I 

don’t care who you are or where 

you’re playing; a bar full of people 

singing along with you on 

“Born to Run” will never not be 

awesome. That band was a little 

sloppy, a little messy, not quite as 

silky smooth as Love Me Dudes 

(my Beatles-only tribute), not 

quite as finessed as The Strangers 

(my Billy Joel tribute), but we 

played with fire and passion. And 

we had a goddamn great time. 

The undeniable sloppy/messy 

heart and soul of that band was 

lead guitarist Dr David Q. Bee, 

who has left us far too soon. We 

parted ways earlier this year 

under not-great circumstances, 

but I was never mad at him (and 

was relieved to learn he was 

never mad at me) and was always 

hopeful of putting another project 

together. There was always going 

to be time. Time to go out on the 

boat he loved so much, time to 

hit Planet Fitness together and 

try to whip our fat asses into 

shape, time to get that 80s band 

going. Time. Now past. If there’s 

someone you’ve been thinking 

about calling because you haven’t 

seen them in a while, do it now. 

Especially if it’s someone you love 

like I loved Dr Bee.

New Show At SOMA 

The NewArt Gallery announces fifth art exhibition of the 2022 season 

SOMA NewArt Gallery announces its 

fifth art exhibition of the 2022 season, 

featuring three regional solo artists. 

“While You Were Sleeping” by Elise 

Bond, “Untethered” by Pat Caulfield 

and “Atmospheres” by Don Merwin will be on 

display September 24 to November 12. 

Bond’s paintings start with various women 

in the arts and from there she reflects moments 

in nature through color and texture to ignite the 

senses. Caulfield’s scenes of the sky and sea are 

painted intuitively to evoke emotion, connect a 

memory or create a longing for new experience. 

Merwin’s goal is to project the Spirit of Nature 

through his images as he finds inspiration in 

the woods and fields, oceans and skies near his 

home in Cape May as well as the mountains he 

see when visiting National Parks. 

Art lovers are invited to attend an Opening 

Artist Reception on Saturday, September 24 

from 6 to 9pm. SOMA is located at 31 Perry

with the world around him. Don 

Merwin is a Cape May treasure. His 

photography is stunning, and he 

makes you ask the question, “Does the world 

ever look like this?” When he captures a scene, 

he somehow brings the colors to a different 

dimension, and if it’s black and white, he 

makes the composition brilliant. 

Merwin’s latest show, “Atmospheres,” 

starts with an opening reception at SOMA 

Gallery next week on Saturday, September 24 

at 6pm. Some favorites in the show include 

“Orange Illusions.” One rhetorical question 

I need to ask is, “Can the sky ever look like 

this?” Gorgeous. I’m reminded of a person I 

knew in the print and copy business. He didn’t 

believe in God. I asked him why. He admitted, 

“I don’t know, but sometimes when I see a 

magnificent sunset, I have to say, ‘I could 

never print something like that.” That’s how I 

fell about Merwin’s “Orange Illusions.” 

“Foggy Mall” is a complicated merging of

light and reflection. If I had been at the Cape 

May Mall at that time, would I have seen the 

same thing? Doubtful. But Merwin’s work is 

more than being at the right place at the right 

time. His work is the result of a vision of the 

world that’s not limited to what is in front of 

you. 

His black-and-white composition “Beach 

Theatre” is nostalgic for anyone who misses 

that wonderful place. After hosting many an 

event there over the years, I am one of those 

people. Was it a perfect venue? None are. And 

that’s what Merwin captures so well. 

Snowy landscapes, structural angles, 

sweeping skies… this show effortlessly 

moves from one motif to another. Merwin 

says of his subject matter, “If it moves me, 

gives me emotion, or if it blows me away — I 

got to capture it. Some of the work, the black 

and whites specifically, reflect the time I felt 

Cape May was more of a town with great 

storefronts and less of a destination. You can 

see the changes with developers and others 

trying to make changes. This show is more 

about how I remember the town.” 

If there was ever a time to celebrate 

Merwin, it’s now. His work is classic, yet 

timely. He appears alongside the bold colors 

of artist Elise Bond and the emotional sky and 

sea imagery of Patricia L. Caulfield. This is a 

must-see exhibit that runs through November 

11. But I urge you to visit the gallery when you 

can ask Merwin and the other artists, “How 

did you capture this so beautifully?”

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Not being in Cape May this past week 

was sheer torture. It’s fall, and every 

fall since 1976, I’ve trained glasses 

on the skies over the Cape reaping 

a harvest of southbound migrants. 

September has it all, shorebirds, raptors, a 

flood of songbirds plus migrating butterflies 

and dragonflies. Not only that but all these 

migrants are tallied by counters stationed at 

Higbee Beach (Morning Flight Count) and the 

Hawk Watch at Cape May Point State Park. 

But, stuck as I am, in Maine, I cannot access 

either location. However, I can reach them 

vicariously, online by going to “Bird Cape 

May,” and scrolling down to “Watches.” There, 

I can find real time postings of whatever is 

being tallied. It’s not as satisfying as being 

there, but it’s better than estrangement. 

Cape May’s fame as a migratory bottleneck 

spans decades but it wasn’t until Cape 

May Bird Observatory started conducting 

daily counts that it became institutionalized. 

The Hawk Watch which is conducted in partnership 

with New Jersey Parks is sponsored 

by Swarovski Optics, a company specializing 

in high-end binoculars and telescopes. The 

Austrian company supports the conservation 

initiatives around the planet and the migration 

counts are used to take the pulse of North 

America’s environmental health and stability. 

The merit of systematic data collection 

was underscored by Rachel Carson’s frightening 

book “Silent Spring,” which disclosed 

the menace inherent in the widespread use 

of insecticides (most notably DDT). Biologist 

Carson used hawk-count data from Hawk 

Mountain to link declines in raptor populations 

to DDT. Originally hailed as a miracle 

cure that killed malaria carrying mosquitoes 

and bedbugs, the substance was later found to 

inhibit the reproductive capacity of assorted 

birds, most notably Bald Eagles and Peregrine 

Falcons whose North American populations 

crashed. Happily, following a domestic ban on 

DDT in 1972, their numbers rebounded. 

The hawk count will run until November 

30. To get a sense of what is possible, go 

online for the daily counts or just show up 

to see the wealth of migrating creatures that 

are part of your natural dowry. It’s a fragile 

endowment, we are one ecological misstep 

from squandering our inheritance. Rachel 

Carson’s message was not, “DDT is bad, stop 

using it.” It was broader — any man-made 

substance widely applied to the environment 

courts unexpected consequences. Be mindful 

of the chemicals you apply in your yard and 

know what harm they do.

Once upon a time, there was fear that 

Peloton and other interactive indoor 

bikes would reduce the number of 

outdoor cyclists. As the “Sold Out” 

signs on the Bikes & Brew website 

show, the opposite seems to have happened. 

In the early days of COVID-19, gyms were 

locked just as many of us realized the importance 

of exercise. Millions of people bought 

equipment to work out at home. Exercising in 

our bedrooms helped us maintain our mental 

and physical health, but some found that 

working out at home is less relaxing. You don’t 

escape into your workout — it’s hard to pretend 

to be cycling through Spain when you can 

still hear the kids arguing, after all. That’s why 

I give all the credit in the world to people who 

regularly rode their pandemic Pelotons, and to 

those who took their new habits outside. 

Many people who learned — or relearned 

— to exercise on indoor bikes eventually 

sought the sun-on-your-face fun of outdoor 

cycling. Venturing outside lets you connect 

with your fellow cyclists in real life. For com- 

petitive types, comparing statistics can’t compare 

to passing your rival in real life. More 

relaxed riders enjoy chatting as they ride along 

with a group of friends, taking turns out front. 

Those who usually ride solo appreciate the 

safety and support of a cycling group. 

All types of dedicated pedal pushers will 

ride for charity on Saturday, September 24 at 

Bikes & Beers Cape May, starting and ending 

at Cape May Brew Co., 1250 Hornet Road in 

Rio Grande, at the Cape May Airport complex. 

Bikes & Beers is a “celebration of cycling, 

craft beer and giving back.” This sold-out event 

brings cyclists together for 15, 30, or 45-mile 

routes through Cape May County, followed by 

an after party featuring refreshments, raffles 

and music. There will be fuel stations along 

the way, rest stops, SAG support, and swag 

for riders. Non-riding supporters can join the 

party back at Cape May Brewing Company 

after the ride is over, though even this part of 

the event has a waiting list. Visit bikesignup.

If you’re inspired to join any large group 

cycling event, get lots of information. “All 

levels” are welcome but ask for details before 

joining a ride like this, especially if you’re a 

little older, or you haven’t ridden a non-stationary 

bike in a long time. Fit people who ride 

often may have a different definition of “easy.” 

Helmets are required. The event is not a race 

and will be held rain or shine. Trailers for your 

children (or pets) are not permitted, though 

the after party is “family friendly.”

tired. Our life is our own here and we’re only 

responsible for ourselves. I don’t want to have

BODIE is a purebred silver lab. He is a sensitive 

pup who is very nervous when meeting 

new people and a slow introduction to

COMMODORE is a gorgeous cat that came 

to the shelter as a stray. He is a three-yearold 

sweetheart who was shot with bbs and 

has FIV. FIV does not affect his quality of life. 

Commodore is neutered and up to date on all 

vaccinations. He would be good in a home 

with other cats and children. If interested in 

adopting Commodore, contact the shelter. 

TAFFY came to the shelter as one of seven 

cats who lived in horrific conditions with a 

hoarder, although he meant well. The cats 

were found very scared, but sweet and needing 

a lot of love. A quiet home would be best 

for Taffy, who is also four years old. She is up 

to date on all vaccinations and spayed. Taffy 

would do well in a home with other cats. 

RUSTY needs a loving home that’s willing to 

give him a chance. He came to the shelter very 

near death — severe upper respiratory, stomatitis 

and pillow paw. This poor boy also suffers 

from diabetes and FIV. Rusty is a good patient 

and eater, and he deserves someone who is 

willing to take care of him. He would be good 

in a home with other cats and dogs.
