LUDGVAN SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 14.10.09

A word from the Principal...
Dear families,
Thank you so much to those who attended our recent Groundforce Day. Our outside area is a really
important part of our provision and is now looking really great. Mr Richards spends a huge amount
of hours improving our outdoor provision and is hoping that we can run more regular Groundforce
Days in the future.
I would like to congratulate our new Head Pupils who were awarded their positions this week. The
role will include showing visitors around the school, contributing to the newsletter, being the public
face of Ludgvan and setting a great example to our other pupils. Sophie and Bella are our Head
Pupils and they will be ably support by our Deputy Head Pupils, Harry and Ilani.
We had our first visit from our Education Welfare Officer this week who works with us on attendance.
I am delighted that our attendance so far this term is 95.5%, which is above the current
national average, but still just short of our pre-pandemic levels of 96%-97%. Thank you for working
hard so hard with your children to ensure good attendance and be reminded that I am unable
to authorise any holidays in term time. We do have a few children who are not arriving before 0900
which not only means they miss the beginning of their learning, but also provides a really unsettled
start to their school day.
Kind regards,
Mr Adam Anderson
Principal

Reporting Illness and Absence
If your child is absent, please ensure you phone the office before 0900 to let us
know. A Dojo message to class teachers is also helpful, but informing the office is a
priority as it ensures we know where all children are. Thank you.
Oracy Challenge!
If I ruled the world...
One player begins by saying “If I ruled the world, I would... because...” and describe what
they’d do any why. The next person must respond by saying “I couldn’t disagree more because...”
(even if they don’t disagree!). They must follow this by stating what they would do
if they ruled the world

Outdoor Learning...
Outdoor Learning has followed a slightly different approach over the past two
weeks. As a school we have been working to make our outside spaces as great
as we can. In addition to our successful first Groundforce Day, our Outdoor
Learning sessions have allowed the children to be involved in a wide variety of
tasks to have a positive and purposeful impact on our grounds. Our sessions in
Year 2 and up have worked on a rotational basis where all children have been
able to take part in fire skills, land management/ landscaping and animal care.
This allows children to not only continue with skills they enjoy, but also have
the opportunity to learn new skills and have new experiences in smaller focused
groups. It’s been great to see how keen all the children have been to get
stuck into all tasks presented to them as well as showing resilience and determination
when faced with more challenging tasks. We are lucky to now be able
to utilise our new farm field to host our Outdoor Learning sessions - the increased
space allows for a wider range of activities but it also allows other ares
of the school to be rested for a more sustainable practice.

EYFS
Early Years have had lots of fun this week exploring our topic of ‘Pirates and
Mermaids’. On Thursday, we dressed up and looked for the lost treasure… lots
of the children were wondering whether a pirate had snuck in and stolen it!
We found gold coins and gems hidden all over the classroom outdoor area.
We have also been working really hard on our new sounds and have enjoyed
spending time with Fred the Frog

Y1
Year 1 have been working extremely hard and have produced some amazing
work! Last week our focus was on the story of the Three Little Pigs. We explored
different kinds of materials and had a go at making our own houses for
the Three Little pigs. This week our story was the Three Billy Goats Gruff and
the children had to make bridges. They also wrote some fantastic sentences
describing the Troll.
In RE we have been learning all about Christian weddings and comparing them
to a Muslim wedding service.

Year 2 have had another busy couple of weeks continuing their learning about
the Great Fire of London. In music, we have started to learn a song about the
events of 1666 whilst in our small world area, we have been enjoying designing
and making our own bridges to go over the River Thames. We have had a focus
on oracy too where we have had to record ourselves talking for 2 minutes
about The Great Fire of London. We had to include high level vocabulary to
score points and lost points for hesitation. It was great fun but hard to do!
In maths, we have been partitioning numbers and locating them on number
lines.
Whilst all of this has been happening, we have also enjoyed harvesting potatoes,
preparing the ground for our bulbs, taking care of the animals and making
fires.

Year 3 have been learning about Cornwall and on Monday they visited St Michael’s
Mount. The children walked across the causeway and headed up towards
the castle. Along the way they saw the Giant’s Well and felt the beating
heart of the giant! They had a beautiful view from the top and enjoyed a good
tour around the castle. Back on Marazion beach they made their own 3D sand
sculptures of St Michael’s Mount, before ending our trip with a play in the park.
Since then, the children have started writing their own Cornish legends and
have used Google maps to go on a virtual tour of Mont St Michel in France to
compare and contrast the two mounts. Good work Year 3.

Class 4 has been busy with all their amazing learning. In English they’ve now
finished typing up their non-chronological reports which they’re all so proud
of. They really enjoyed seeing the end result of their hard work. The children
have been very excited as all of their work will be put together into a non-fiction
book about sea creatures and shared with the younger children. In art, the
children have been drawing sea creatures which demonstrate detail, scale and
proportion. They are really true artists. The children have loved learning about
volcanoes, I was so impressed with their ability to use Google Earth to map all
the world famous volcanoes. Well done Class 4.

Class 5 have had a fantastic two weeks completing their Bikeability course.
They began session 1, learning cycling safety skills in the playground, before
completing the course with two road sessions and all the children who took
part, passed the course! Well done Class 5!
In Science, we have continued our learning about plant reproduction. We took
spider plant cuttings and began a ‘propagation investigation’, observing how
the roots of the cuttings developed and grew in water in just a few days. We
then repotted them into compost. We look forward to observing their growth
over the next term.
In Geography, we have been using atlases and maps to locate South America.
We have spent time learning about map keys and other features of the atlas,
including the different types of maps within it. We have also enjoyed learning
about biomes and biodiversity.
Class 5 have had a great time creating a polling programme using Micro:bits in
Computing. The children have really impressed us with their ability to recognise
coding structures and create programmes using code.
In English, Class 5 have created fantastic non-chronological reports about
South American landmarks. It has been so wonderful to see the children taking
such care in their work and producing work that they are really proud of. Well
done, Class 5.

Year 6 have been writing amazing letters this week, as if they were soldiers
from the trenches. After exploring the thoughts, sights, sounds and emotions
of Tommies during WW1, we developed an emotive letter to a friend or relative.
Last week, in art, our focus was to create human form by using charcoal
shades and tone. I think you’ll agree, that these examples that have been
placed onto the class’ WOW board would rival that of any professional artist
