Perfumes make meaningful gifts,
symbolising love and affection
and evoking shared memories.
A beautiful fragrance is something
everybody appreciates, regardless of
gender, age or style, however it can be
daunting finding the perfect fragrance
match for your loved one.
That’s why we consulted well-known
fragrance guru Michael Marzano, head
of training for Agence de Parfum and
Libertine perfumeries (found in Myer,
DJs and specialty stores). He has
helped hundreds of anxious presentseekers
to find the perfect fragrance
and now trains all his staff to do the
same thing.
Michael’s first rule of thumb is to
plan properly. Make a checklist so
that the salesperson has as much
information as possible to help you
on your quest. Your checklist should
include your budget and the would-be
recipient’s age, as well as the following:
• whether they are a mum (or dad)
• occupation
• personality type
• whether they are sporty
• whether they are highly allergic
• favourite perfumes or ones
they have worn in the past
• whether they dress casually or
more formally.
If you don’t have all that information,
Michael suggests purchasing a candle,
body wash or body lotion instead.
Many times, he says the customer
comes back and buys the perfume
next, as the recipient just loved the
fragrance of the body lotion or other
fragrant gift.
Companies like Santa Maria Novella,
which Agence de Parfum distributes,
now make all their latest perfumes
with accessories such as body
lotions, washes and draw sachets and
sometimes even candles.
When in doubt, a subtle fragrance
is usually received well, such as Aventus
for Her or Love in White by Creed. For
fresh and clean tones, Angels of
Florence or Freesia by Santa Maria
Novella are always a hit.
Invest in the time to take your
perfume present seriously – you’ll be
rewarded 10-fold when your loved one
