I think I made a huge faux pas. I went to my
sister’s house for Christmas morning to watch
her kids open their presents. I didn’t realize
her brother-in-law would be there. My sister
has always claimed he has a thing for me, but
I dismissed it as he has never done anything
to make me think that. Well, on Christmas
morning he had a beautiful handbag from
Red Oak for me. I felt so bad that I was empty
handed. Now what do I do? — Caught off guard

find out from your sister if the brother-in-law
is under the impression that his intentions
have been relayed to you. However, he does
have to put his big boy pants on and speak up

I just started dating a woman I really
like, but I want to take it slow because I have
a terrible track record due to my job. I’m a
police officer with odd hours and assignments
which make it difficult. This woman’s father
and her brother are both in law enforcement
and she seems to get it. I don’t want to screw
anything up. What do you suggest for a perfect
New Year’s Eve? I’m on vacation that week so

It is wonderful that you found someone
who has first-hand knowledge about the job
you do in protecting us. It is also a good sign
that you are mindful of the impact it has on
people who care for you. For New Year’s Eve,
remember perfect is the enemy of good. Shoot
for a lovely evening. First a horse and buggy
ride around Cape May. Don’t whine about the
cold — bring a blanket. For dinner, Tisha’s,
The Lookout at Ferry Park and The Pier House
never disappoint. Hemingway’s also has a
great menu. Finish the night with some bar
hopping — the Ugly Mug is a must. Don’t
neglect the beachfront — Carney’s is always
