If you’re thinking about buying a home, you're likely trying to juggle your needs, current
If this sounds like you, here's one key factor that could help you with your decision: there
What Caused the Increase in Housing Inventory This Year?
The primary reason the supply of available homes for sale has grown is because homes are
staying on the market a bit longer. That's happening because higher interest rates and
home prices have helped moderate buyer demand, which has slowed down the rate at
which homes are selling. And, as the pace of sales has slowed, inventory has grown as a
result.
While overall inventory gains may slow down this winter due to typical housing market
seasonality, you still have a chance to capitalize on the current supply. There is usually a
good number of homes that go on the market right after the holidays as well - so this may
be perfect timing for you!
What This Means to You
Regardless of the source, the increase in available housing supply is good for buyers. More
homes available for sale means you have more options to choose from as you search for
your next home, and you may also have more time to consider them.
So, if you tried to buy a home last year and lost out in a bidding war or just couldn't find
something you liked, this may be the news you've been waiting for. If you start your search
today, those additional options should make it less difficult to find the right home for you!
Just remember, housing supply is still relatively low overall, so it won't suddenly be
easy – it will just be less challenging than it was at this time last year. The increase in
housing supply helps put you in a great position to find your dream home in the New
Year.
Bottom Line
If you're ready to jump into the housing market and see what's available, let's connect. My
office is open 7 days a week for your convenience, and my team is ready to go to work for
you!
My Transgender Feline
By: Dan Roberts / Roberts Rules
“
Why don’t you get two?” Once again, my
mouth moved faster than my brain.
Last month, my Rana received a “desperate”
text (is there any other kind?)
from a cat rescue organization.
They sent her a photo of a
Maine Coon in critical need of
a home.
Rana mentioned that she
once had the same type of
kitty…and weren’t they
beautiful?... never caused her
any trouble…and now that the
dogs are gone… how opposed
would I be (as if I really had a
choice) if we adopted her?
Rather than think, I comically
(but stupidly) made the above
statement. And to make matters
worse, the cat rescuer advised
my PILL (partner in love & life)
that the cat had an “inseparable
sister” and that she would hate
to break them up - and could
she bring both over for a visit?
No doubt you can figure
out the rest. Rana’s cat, Nikita
climbed on her and began
purring. It was over.
The other one looked at yours truly (which I was told was “all mine”)
and took off behind the couch.
Now I understand the unconditional devotion these rescue
individuals have with the animals. I really do admire and respect that.
However, after only a few moments of listening to them go on and
on (and on) about the problems and needs, I start my deer-in-theheadlights
(sort of like when Rana lectures me about bathroom
etiquette) look.
And then to top it off, the rescue gal advised that we needed to call her
the next morning and report how the “peeing, pooping and sleeping”
were going. When I inquired as to whether she meant me or the cats,
From our Vegas Voice family to yours: We wish you a very happy
and healthy 2023. May all your dreams & wishes come true!
she was not amused.
Even Rana gave me “the look” and pointedly advised that my
presence was no longer necessary.
Anyway, since I “agreed” to the new houseguests, Rana said I could
come up with a different name for my apparent new and hidden friend.
Keeping it simple, I wanted to
call it “Cat”, but she said that
was “stupid” and try again.
I then exclaimed I would
call it “Eli” after former New
York Giants quarterback Eli
Manning. My Ladylove quickly
answered that the name was
absurd since the cat was female.
I was “shocked, shocked” by
her obvious bigoted remark.
I told her that she was totally
out-of-line in making that
assumption since I suggested
that the cat was “transgender.”
“How do you know that?”
my Rana demanded. “How do
you know it’s not? I smartly
responded.
There we were having a semilong
“discussion” over a possible
transgender feline. And contrary
to her usual “determined
(meaning stubborn) positions”
(and to my complete surprise)
Rana gave up and said that while I’m still a jerk, I can call it whatever
I want.
So, I’m proud to introduce my transgender cat – Eli.
And the best part: after about a week (while constantly reassuring
Eli that I understand and accept without any reservations her gender
issue) she/he/it (whatever) now follows me everywhere… and even
sits with me while I watch the football games.
Real New Year’s Resolutions
By: Gayla Kalp / Life is Laughter
hate New Year’s Resolutions, but I hope you like
I these:
1. I’m opening a gym called “Resolutions.”
It will have exercise equipment for the first two
weeks and then I’ll turn it into a bar for the rest of the year.
2. Start smoking to lose weight.
3. Dear Luck, Can we be friends in 2023, Please?
4. Live my best life and only buy pants with no buttons or zippers.
5. To go the entire year without accidentally telling someone random
on the phone (like your doctor’s office scheduler) “Love you!” as the
call ends.
6. Read more… or at least turn the subtitles on while binge-watching
TV.
7. Get in shape…I choose round shape.
8. Put on a full outfit for Zoom calls. No more business attire on top
and PJs below.
9. Do not hit the elevator button repeatedly in a futile attempt to
make it go/come faster.
10. Stop Googling “Symptoms.”
11. Be OK with having to make more than one trip from the car to
bring in groceries. After all, the human arm and your arthritis can
only do so much.
12. Lose weight, exercise, do stuff, give up coffee, give up sugar - try
not to die.
*In 2022, I was going to quit all my bad habits for the New Year, but
then I remembered that nobody likes a Quitter.
*Last New Year’s Eve, I stood up in my local pub and said, “At the
stroke of midnight, I want every person to be standing next to the one
person who made your life worth living this year.” As the clock struck
midnight, the Bartender was almost crushed to death!
**And, last but not least, to all Vegas Voice readers: May all your
troubles last as long as your New Year’s Resolutions.
Gayla is a speaker, author, psychologist and humorist. She also
happens to be Ms. Sr. California, Nevada and Universe England.
You Gotta Laugh
By: Bill Caserta / Bill’s Blurbs
My Top 10 Concerns
1. “Who cares if it looks good? I’m
comfortable”
2. “Has anyone seen my phone?”
3. “The scale... that can’t be right!’
4. “Did I already take my vitamins?”
5. “Huh, I wonder how I got this bruise?
6. “Why is the print on these instructions so tiny?”
7. “Software update again? I don’t like updates.”
8. “Who in the world is calling me at 7:30 pm?”
9. “Sorry, I forgot what I was going to say.”
10. “Wait! Why did I come in here?”
My Thoughts & Beliefs
1. Well, another day passed, and I didn’t use algebra.
2. Every family has one weird relative. If you don’t know who it is,
then it’s probably you.
3. Just got 30 minutes of cardio trying to pick up an ice cube from
the kitchen floor.
4. Having two incomes is better than one when buying a house. So,
make sure your partner is working two jobs.
5. Don’t be mad at lazy people. They didn’t do anything
Not Easy Being Me: Realized I had to use the bathroom. Got up
and walked across the house to the pantry. Couldn’t remember why I
was in the pantry then remembered I had to use the bathroom.
Walked across the house to the bathroom. Sitting on the throne I
remembered why I went to the pantry... Toilet paper.
And Finally: I may not have lost all my marbles yet, but there is a
small hole in the bag somewhere.

“Just Let Her Die”
By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox
As the days go by, I am receiving more and
more email and phone calls from families
and friends that have negative experiences with
health facilities and hospitals in the Las Vegas Valley. It appears that
there is, at best, little to no oversite by our
state government
Rest assured that The Vegas Voice
will be following up and try to hold the
individuals – both public and private
officials accountable. Hopefully I can
report good news in future editions.
However, one particular case is so
beyond the pale. I received information
about an adult son, who was the trustee
in charge of his mother’s health care. He
presented proof that his instructions in restoring his mother’s health
was ignored by the doctor and Desert Spring Hospital.
The doctor, without any discussion with the son, ordered a Do-Not-
Resuscitate (DNR) for his mother. Another doctor at Desert Springs
even made a statement (in front of witnesses!) that the mother was
using too much oxygen and they should “Just let her die.” With
medication and proper care withheld, she did die.
As I look into these health care facilities, it seems like seniors are now
expendable, with no concern for whatever years they have left. “Just let
her die” seems to be the new mantra.
Apparently, I am not the only one who believes we seniors seem to
be irrelevant to the health care community. In the December 22 issue
of AARP Magazine there is a feature
story - “When Ageism Kills, Texas Elder
Murders.” It’s good (but terrifying)
reading.
As I wrote before, the only way that
we can change this narrative is if we do
so ourselves. And if you have your own
similar story, please contact me.
*February stars the Nevada Legislature
2023 session and we will be taking the
Final Wishes petitions signed by all to lobby for that bill.
If you have not signed it and believe that Nevada should follow the
other states who have passed laws allowing those with terminal illness
to end their lives with dignity, please either mail and return the below
petition or fill it out online at our website: thevegasvoice.net.
We will have more info in the February edition and will start our
“age-qualified community” presentations around the Valley
8
January 2023
Guardianship/Final Wishes Presentation
The Vegas Voice will, once again, provide its FREE guardianship
update and seminar on Monday, February 20, 2023, at 2 pm. The event,
sponsored by Sun City MacDonald Ranch is the (finally) simple “ounce
of prevention” guaranteed to forever protect yourself, loved ones, friends,
and neighbors from ever being a victim of the guardianship scandal.
Led by political editor Rana Goodman & publisher Dan Roberts,
discussions will include the guardianship reforms accomplished over the
past years, information concerning the Nevada Secretary of State Lockbox
protections as well as providing the “Guardianship Nomination Form.”
AND there will be a discussion and petition drive for our latest initiative
– Final Wishes/Death With Dignity legislation to be passed into law. We
will likewise have the latest information and updates.
The presentation is open to everyone but due to space restrictions, you
must RSVP. To do so, go to the Sun City MacDonald Ranch front desk or
call The Vegas Voice 702/251-4441.

It’s the Beaver!
By: Beverly Washburn / Hollywood Memories
Happy New Year!
For those of you who read my column or
have read my book, I’m sure
you know the love and respect I’ve always had for
my very dear friend, Tony Dow. He will forever
remain in my heart.
Losing those whom we love will always be one of
life’s most difficult challenges.
And thinking of Tony, I’m sure all will remember
the TV show “Leave It To Beaver.” Jerry Mathers
had the starring role of Beaver Cleaver.
He is now 74 years old, happily married for the
3 rd time and has 3 children. He started out as a child model at 2, and
did several other TV shows, but it was Leave It To Beaver, that made
him famous.
I first met Jerry Mathers (along with Tony) when I did an episode
called “The Blind Date Committee.” It was about “Wally” being in
charge of the committee.
His job was trying to get a date for me, but to no avail. Everyone he
asked would not take me out since I wasn’t popular in school.
There is a scene in which Beaver (fondly called “The Beave”) and his
friend decide to ring my doorbell to take a look at me. They then run
away and report to Wally.
There’s also a funny scene where Wally then asks the Beave if I’m
ugly. He shakes his head “No.” Wally then asks if
I’m pretty, to which he once again shakes his head
“No.”
Wally finally asks him what I look like and Beaver
replies, “Kinda like Nuthin.”
My scene with Jerry was very brief, so I never really
got to know him well. And (of course) at the time, I
had a huge crush on Tony Dow, since he was more
my age.
Over the years, I never ran into Jerry but kept up a
wonderful friendship with Tony.
I saw Jerry recently at a gathering and we caught up and shared
stories - mostly about Tony. I loved seeing him after all these years.
We reminisced about our scene together 63 years ago...Ah, sweet
memories. How very blessed I am.
Until next time, remember, A hug is the one present that’s always
worth giving.
10 Years of Fluff & Stuff
By: Adrea Nairne-Barrera / Senior Moments
wrote my first article for The Vegas Voice in
I November 2012.
I had scribbled some things down that amused
me and, on a whim, I submitted them to Dan, our publisher. It never
dawned on me that 10 years later I would still be writing for the
magazine.
This column has meant a lot to me. Sometimes I’m writing “fluff”
and then I can get serious. It’s like my own personal soapbox directed
at my fellow seniors.
We face different challenges as we age, and most are not to be taken
lightly. But I try to look at them with humor and optimism about the
future for whatever lies ahead.
We’re on the “home stretch” and, as they say, I want to cross that
finish line celebrating all that I have done.
Since I started, I have a new granddaughter and I’m completely in
love with her. Every time I get a text with a short video of her saying
hello or wishing me a happy birthday, I turn to complete mush.
She has a beautiful future ahead and it makes me wish I can live
long enough to see her have kids too. These last 10 years have kept
changing my focus too.
And the state of world affairs is so disturbing no matter where you
stand politically. The violence, loss of respect, insane conspiracies and
stupid people following criminals like lemmings is not something I
ever imagined. I know I can’t use this column as a platform for my own
beliefs, but I remember a day when we actually listened with respect.
I also won a national (NAMPA) award for this column, and it was the
best surprise ever! Ten years ago, I started a new chapter in my life and
then in 2020, I lost my husband to covid and had to start all over again.
Life seems to be a series of re-starts and it changes you.
There are no rules and no guidebooks so here I am staring out in the
world looking for new possibilities. 2023 is here!
Adrea likes to opine and find the lighter side of life as a senior.

Solve or Resolve
By: Pat Alexander / Art of Entertaining
It’s 2023, almost a quarter century from the
time the world worried about Y2K and the dire
consequences that would follow. We do tend to
like our drama!
Do you still make New Year resolutions? I don’t. They’re easily made
and easily forgotten.
Instead, I prefer to think about the past year, the good times, the
sad times, the accomplishments, the debacles, all of which can make
for one very memorable year. For me and my family It was a year that
started with celebration then came sadness and change.
I’ve re-learned that life is a gift, and that attitude makes all the
difference in everything. And that the things I enjoy most are the things
I need to spend my time on, and that memories make life full.
Given that cooking is a major enjoyment in my life, it seems that
whenever I’m happy I cook. Whenever I’m troubled I cook. When I
need to work out a problem I cook.
I read cookbooks until I can put together parts of recipes to make a
new dish, and then I cook until the problem is solved. Sometimes that’s
a lot of cooking! I wish I had more time to cook this past year. It would
have helped to soften the experiences.
I did have the opportunity to try a few new recipes, and this is one
that I really like. I tweaked it until it’s at the top of my list of appetizers
or hors d’oeuvre. You can even
serve it on crackers.
I wish you a happy, healthy
New Year with every good thing
that can possibly come your
way.
Chicken Tarts – 30
Pieces
In large pan, heat 2 tbs. each
butter and olive oil. Add 1 cup
chopped sweet onion and 1 cup
chopped mushrooms. Cook
until lightly browned, about 10
minutes.
Add 1 clove minced garlic, ½
tsp. salt and ½ tsp. black pepper. Cook, stirring, 2 minutes. Add 8 oz.
cream cheese, stirring until melted.
Add 1 cup cooked, chopped chicken breast. Mix until combined.
Remove from heat and cool. Spoon mixture into defrosted mini phyllo
shells. Sprinkle chopped green onion over top and bake at 350 degrees
for 7 minutes. Serve hot or warm.
New Year - New Combinations
By: Sandi Davis / Fashion “Cents”
Hello my pretties! New Years and new
resolutions have
already arrived. But are
they NEW resolutions?
In years past, I have resolved: Lose weight,
exercise more, buy less, etc. In review, for the
most part, it was all about looking and feeling
better.
I still want to be the best I can, but I vowed
(a resolution!) to start on the inside. First and
foremost, be nicer and then reduce my closet
footprint. Feel good on the inside so the outside
will shine.
We all have standbys, our around-the-house
uniform, grocery uniform, and dinner (but not
too dressy) uniform. I am changing that habit.
I am going to wear something new at least once a month. And to do
so by combining part of the uniform and adding something different
that I already own.
I enjoyed writing about colors for most of my articles in 2022, and I
will continue with that theme. Namely:
January is White month. February is Red, March Green, April Yellow,
May Pink, June Black, July Blue (red/white/
blue), August Purple, September Brown,
October Orange, November Burgundy, and
December Multi-colored with sparkle!
I reserve the right to move colors around and
I promise to dedicate one paragraph to describe
what I pulled together. I challenge you to put
something new together; and if it doesn’t work,
think about giving the item or items away.
For January, my beautiful white suit jacket
with fur collar (leaving the pants in the closet),
paired with a black and white pleated skirt and
black cashmere sweater and red booties and
purse.
Nothing new, just a new combination. What
will your new combination be?
Be Careful!
By: Linda Bateman-Gomez / Timeless Beauty
Although innovation continues to bring us
many new, fun, beauty products, not all that
glitters is gold. Recently, there have been several
articles of concern for ingredients in commonly used products that are
potentially dangerous.
The three most recent ones I’ve read about, I’ll mention here. There
isn’t enough room to give full details in my column, but I did want to
raise awareness so that if you or someone you know uses these products
you can look further into the information.
The first one is skin-whitening cream. As we age and get dark spots,
many people use skin-whitening products.
Surprisingly, many of them contain mercury which is often not
mentioned on the label. Products sold online are often from other
countries and do not meet the same safety guidelines as USA, FDA
approved products.
Second, dry shampoo. While very convenient, recently many of these
products were found to contain benzene, which is a cancer-causing
ingredient. Make sure and check your labels for that.
Third, the NIH recently released a report showing a possible
connection to hair-straightening products and uterine cancer. I don’t
straighten my hair, but my daughter does, so I was able to share this
info with her.
While it is hard to know how any chemical in products we use will
affect us, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Things we use and
assume are safe because they are readily available and sold online and
January 2023
in stores, may not be.
It’s problematic that we use these products and then it’s years before
the FDA and NIH release these reports. The best we can do is buy FDA
approved products, check the labels, and Google info when trying a
new product.
If these are products you use, if you Google them and add the word
“warning” you will be able to find more information on risks associated
with their use.
Stay beautiful and stay safe!
Here’s the latest on our mini–Golden Doodle,
Howdy. He’s 4 months old now and growing
fast. His legs are so long, he now towers over our little girl, Angel Gal.
They say mini-Golden Doodles should weigh between 20 and 30
pounds when fully grown. The way he looks now, he could end up
larger. (Uh-oh and oh boy.)
He’s pretty much housebroken thanks to crate training. He knows
how to sit, but that’s about it. With his last shots, he’ll be able to go for
walks, meet other doggies, and play his little heart out. We’ll also start
obedience training.
If our walls were
thin enough for
people walking by,
they’d likely hear
words like this:
“Howdy, stop
it! Don’t eat that!
Leave it alone!
Drop it! What’s in
your mouth? You
can’t eat my shoe!
“Stop chewing
my zipper! Don’t
even THINK about
chewing that! Bad
dog! Good dog!
Bad dog! “Good
dog!
“Stop eating
Angel’s food! Give
her back that greenie! Sit! Good boy! Outside! You have to go poop?
You want to go pee? Great job! Nice pooper! Such a good boy!
“Ouch! Your teeth are so sharp! Let go of my pants leg! Let’s play
with your ball! Leave your sister alone!
“It’s okay, it’s just the lawn mower! It’s okay, it’s just the vacuum
cleaner! It’s okay, it’s just the washing machine, the dryer, the
dishwasher, the doorbell, the phone, the dog next door, the dog
across the street, the printer, the copy machine, etc.”
Our putting green, now known as the “pooping green”, has really
gotten a workout. I think that when he’s over the puppy phase, the
whole green will have to be replaced. Meanwhile, we’re glad we have a
place to put a circular fence where he can do his business and receive
a ridiculous amount of over- the- top praise.
2023 is going to be great! Howdy is going to grow up, calm down,
and will hopefully stop eating paper like my treasured copies of The
Vegas Voice!
Dogs: We Don’t
Deserve Them
By: Jane Dow / Mutterings & Musings
Dogs’ lives are too short. Their only fault
really” - Agnes Turnbull
I can tire of talking about politics, the weather, or my chubby thighs.
I never grow weary thinking about, speaking about, or kissing my doxie
Mandy.
We humans love our pooches, don’t we? A wet nose and soft ears bring
out the best in us.
A black cocker spaniel named Jet was my first dog. I was six. Then
came Tag, a spunky terrier, in my junior high years.
The only time I ever saw my father cry was after he accidentally ran
over Tag with his truck as he returned home from work. I remember us
all sitting around the kitchen table crying as we tried to eat our dinner.
Then there was Boris, the black Dachshund, who was eaten by a
German shepherd (sadly ironic). Lady, a stray, who ate the only fur coat
I ever had.
Lucy, the piebald Dachshund, was my first dog after the divorce. I
could have put her down after the catastrophic “back event” at two years
old that left her rear legs paralyzed. Instead, she became an unofficial
ambassador for disabled dogs.
When I took her for walks in her cart, (see photo) I saw grown men
cry because they thought she was in pain. Yes, she brought out the best
in gnarly old men.
Now there’s Mandy. The Best Dog Ever. She is a rescue, a big, lovable
lump of Dachshund. She doesn’t bark or bite. Never met a human or
fellow creature she didn’t lick.
At times, I’m afraid I love her too much. I get up at 6 am every
morning to take her on a long walk. Then again at night. I wouldn’t do
that for myself, but I do it for her.
Yes, she makes me a healthier and better person. Long live dogs.
“If there are no dogs in heaven, then when I die I want to go where
they went.” - Will Rogers
Jane taught high school English and theatre for 30 years. She now
spends her time being a Toastmaster, enjoying the endless entertainment
options in our town, attending Pilates classes and spoiling
her rescue, Mandy.

Susan Newman is a Solera resident and is
“My philosophy is to teach people how to play and have fun.” states
She retired
loved it so much
Keep Moving
By: Betty Boyd / Love of the Sport
that water
volleyball came
into being.
Susan has
been living in
the Vegas Valley for two years. Two of her requirements for the “Age-
Qualified” community were table tennis and a pool.
Susan always played table tennis as a kid, and the competition
between her and her brothers was a constant. Ultimately, she joined the
table tennis club.
She plays table tennis three days a week; if new people join, Susan is
there to help them out. She loves to hit the ball hard, and this sport is
excellent for hand and eye coordination.
Solera has a water aerobics class, and Susan wanted to make this
more enjoyable, so she introduced water volleyball. Eight to ten people
play every Saturday and love hitting the ball, which is delightful. There
is an inflatable net, so you know where to hit the ball.
What is remarkable about water volleyball is that it is great exercise
and improves your flexibility, reflexes, and movement in the water. All
the players do a great job playing, being competitive, challenging one
another, and having a great time.
In fact, there is even an 86-year -old woman who plays, does water
aerobics and works out in the fitness room.
Susan makes table tennis and water volleyball enjoyable, fun, and
an all-around good time. Keep moving and enjoy the sport you love;
Susan is a true testament to this philosophy.
Clothes for the New Year?
By: Mike Murphy / Social Insecurity
The new year is the perfect time to ring out the
old and ring in the new when it comes to
one’s wardrobe.
My first thirty years teaching I was a devoted tie-guy. I had an
over-flowing tie rack including special ties for the holidays: ties with
shamrocks, reindeer, tacos, or turkeys.
As the years went by, I noticed that just me and one other seasoned
veteran were wearing ties to school, so I started to back off, not wanting
to augment my label as “the old guy.”
After several years of retirement, I’ve noticed a sharp decline in the
quality of my clothes. Part of my retirement plan was to just ride it out
with the clothes I had and not purchase anything new.
Oh, sure, there are the occasional gifts of a Father’s Day shirt or
Christmas socks. Plus, I picked up a good supply of new underwear
when a local store closed out, so I’m pretty well set there.
I admit I’ve considered upgrading by buying a new pair of those
skinny jeans. Only problem is my midriff bulge, also known as the
spare tire.
Granted, my spare tire is more like a Mini Cooper’s than a Hummer’s,
but it’s still (to extend the metaphor) a bit of a speed bump for such
form-fitting jeans to slide over.
I really think if I could squeeze into a pair of those chic jeans, it
would create the illusion of cutting off ten pounds. But the illusion
wouldn’t last because eventually I would have to exhale.
Besides, I hate shopping for clothes. It’s just a real stressful experience
for me. Say, I pick out some pants and shirt to try on. Once inside the
dressing room, I take off everything I’m wearing and stare in disbelief
at the full-length mirror thinking ‘Good Lord, I actually look like that!’
Another thing that bugs me is the confusing store coupons. Like, how
am I supposed to figure out what a 15% discount on $43.85 is?
Plus, once you consider all the clothes excluded from the coupon
discount, about all that’s left is a generic brand of white socks!
So, I figure I’ll just keep wearing what I have.
Living Trust Concerns
By: Jerry Creed / Trust Jerry
“
Does your Plan prepare you if one or both of
you have to go to a Skilled Nursing Facility or
Memory Care Facility?”
These days, most homeowners are getting a Living Trust and rightly
so, because the Living Trust is the preferred estate planning vehicle. But
few are asking, “How does my estate plan help me handle with Elder
Planning or Assisted Living?
You see, when you buy a car and drive it off the lot, you’ll know if it’s
a lemon in a few days or months. But when will you know whether your
Living Trust is a lemon?
Probably years from now, when you (or your spouse) are ill, disabled,
entering a skilled nursing facility/memory care facility or pass away.
This is when you and your loved ones most need the Trust to work --
and when it’s too late to fix it!
I met with a family last week that is going to lose several hundred
thousand dollars because their Trust didn’t prepare for assisted
living.
Unfortunately, you may have been led to believe that all Living Trusts
are the same and the only difference is price. The truth is all Living
Trusts are not created equally!
You and your loved ones can’t afford to just wait and see if the Living
Trust you’ll get (or have) is a “ticking time bomb.” Now is the time to
find out and take the steps to avoid problems.
Learn why/how:
1. Many Living Trust plans may prevent you from qualifying for
Medicaid benefits and allow your estate to be wiped out by nursing
home bills! or Nevada’s Enhanced Medicaid Recovery!
2. If you’re married, how the wrong type of Trust can force your
surviving spouse to needlessly lose half your community property
when it could have been protected.
3. It’s important for your Trust to be able to adapt to the changed
situations and needs of your loved ones -- after you’re gone! - such
as unexpected financial setbacks, illness, disability, or drug or alcohol
problems! AND
4. How properly drafted Powers of Attorney for Finances and
Healthcare may remove the threat of guardianship, preserving your
ability to act and not involve the Court system. (A Living Trust that
merely avoids probate and estate taxes isn’t good enough anymore!)
5. How to preserve your ability to act and make choices to save your
assets!
6. How a “Blue Pig” can save half a couple’s community property
when a spouse dies, and
7. How a “Pink Pig” can save your house
Check the seminar flyer below and make your reservation
right away.
Don’t risk all you’ve worked for during your lifetime. A properly
drafted and maintained Living Trust is critical to you and your loved
ones’ well-being -- be informed, rather than wait until it’s too late!
Are You Sustainable?
By: Pat Landaker / Positive Aging
he word “sustainability” is usually associated
Twith protecting the environment, but it can
also apply to you and your life. How will you
sustain the life you love living?
Are you able to keep up with the life you’re living now? Do you have
what it takes to keep up with the “YOU” you want to become?
If you want to manage and adjust your lifestyle so it better aligns with
your “now” life, I suggest creating a Sustainability Plan. Sustaining
yourself means knowing yourself.
What do you need versus what do you want? What are your “must
haves?” Are you living in your strengths or in your weaknesses? What
will it take to maintain your current lifestyle?
If you love your life the way it is and want to maintain it, this plan’s
for you. Creating a Sustainability Plan offers a reality check that will
help answer many questions.
What’s a Sustainability Plan? It’s a roadmap to sustaining and
maintaining your life by understanding what it takes to keep you going
and keep growing.
Figure out what you must do now to manage and maintain your
future life. Then, answer these questions: What needs to change? What
needs to stay and what needs to go?
What fulfills you and truly makes you happy? What do you need to
stay in step with life’s shifts?
Here are 8 steps to get you started:
1. Do some self-discovery. Who are you and where are you now?
2. Check your self-alignment. Do you align with who and where you
want to be?
3. Establish priorities. What are the needs, wants and “must haves?”
4. Discover your new opportunities. Have you identified what awaits
you?
5. Determine your capabilities. Are you biting off more than you can
chew?
6. Know your personal viability. Are you financially, emotionally, and
physically sustainable?
7. Know your personal protections. Does your environment (family,
friends, and community) support you?
8. Know your personal equity. Are you investing in yourself (selfcare)?
It’s time to meet up with the You today and create a sustainable
You for tomorrow. Please email me if you’d like my Sustainability Plan
template.
A “Little” Slower in Nevada
By: Liz Breier / This & That
will preface my article by stating, without
I condition, that I love living here. I love my
home, friends, and my family. I love the weather
(most of the time) and the shows, restaurants,
and the casinos.
When Bill and I moved here from
Florida 15 years ago, I was discouraged
by all the “brown” I saw. Not seeing
much greenery didn’t seem very
welcoming..
But I learned to love the foliage,
the plants unique to the desert that
provide so much color and of course
the mountains – love them with their
snowcaps in the winter. However, I was
astonished, being a resident rather
than a tourist, how incredibly “backwards” I found Las Vegas.
For example, the last Fed Ex pickup was hours earlier than I was used
to. I soon learned that the lights and glitz of “the strip” are deceiving –
one block away and it’s a no-man’s land.
Here I am years later and am shocked to find out that the Nevada
Secretary of State changed its computer system some 3 ½ years ago
( July 2019 according to a supervisor) and that system does not allow
them to input any commercial registered agents (required to be a
registered agent for 10 or more entities) into their system.
They are “working on it” for 3 ½ years? The lack of ability to have
people or entities comply with the Nevada statutes (specifically NRS
77.320) for more than 3+ years sums up why, in my opinion, Nevada
is slow to catch up to technology (and business). It certainly cannot be
accused of being on “the cutting edge.”
So, when I find Nevada to be a bit
of a “backwards” place, please forgive
me. I do not mean to insult but in
this day and age of computers and
programmers it is unfathomable that
the government office cannot input
the required information.
Adding insult to injury, if you e-mail
for an update – the automated reply
tells you to be patient for up to 2 weeks
because of their backlog. No such luck
– two months later and no response.
So, with a sigh, I reiterate that I love living here but must reconcile
myself to the fact that things here do not move quickly.
Smile More in 2023
By: Mary Richard / Health Fitness
Whew! We made it through another year trip
around this earth. If you are reading this,
congratulations on surviving 2022.
Fortunately, I did not contact Covid, and didn’t even have any
symptoms. I tested negative all the times I took the tests. Will this Covid
ever go away?
If you want to enjoy 2023, then try to make some changes. Don’t be a
couch potato, go out and make some changes. Meet new people.
Smile more - it takes less muscles to smile then it takes to frown.
Besides, when you smile, you feel good and make all around you feel
good.
Everyone Needs
Ho’oponopono
By: Ali Guggenheim / Psychic Phenomenon
“
Reflecting the true spiritual essence of living
in harmony with themselves, family and
community was how every Hawaiian once strived to live their life.
While being guided and protected by their Kupuna (elders) and
Aumakua (ancestors), practicing the Ho’o.po.no.po.no process –
meaning reconciliation and forgiveness,” explains Pali Jae Lee, “was
what helped them achieve this state of balance.”
Ho’oponopono is a unique, simple, effective and powerful four step
practice that originated in ancient Hawaii. This technique has been
proven to work with individuals, as well as on a collective consciousness.
Try to be excited about new things - try a new exercise class. Even
if you goof up, you will feel better when all is done. I’ve tried various
classes, even ones I wasn’t sure of and had a blast.
Try to declutter your home. If it’s something you haven’t used in
quite a while (or worn) throw it out or donate it to charity. I’ve gone
through my closets and drawers and gotten rid of clothes I’m tired of,
don’t fit right and just need to make some space in my closet. You’d be
surprised of what you find when you’re decluttering!
Unfollow negative people on social media. I’ve “unfriended” some
people who constantly post negative comments, are rude, disgusting or
I just don’t have anything in common with them anymore. You’ll feel
so much better and have a sunnier attitude.
Try a new craft or hobby. I never thought I’d be such an addict of
jigsaw puzzles, but they are fun, keep the brain cells working and what
an accomplishment when they are finished! Studies have shown that
puzzles, Sudoku or any “brain work” will help to keep us all alert.
My goal in 2023 is to try new goals, and enjoy life, since we are not
promised tomorrow.
BE GRATEFUL - for whatever you have, not what you don’t have.
POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND HAPPY HEALTH TO ALL!
Mary Richard is a long term supporter of senior fitness. She teaches
Zumba, toning and dance classes throughout the Las Vegas
Valley. She can be reached at zumbaqueen@cox.net.
January 2023
Hawaiian courts order juvenile and adult offenders to work with
court-approved, native elders who conduct traditional Ho’oponopono
- without any court interference as a form of alternative dispute
resolution for them.
Dr. Phil repeatedly says that “you are either part of the solution or
part of the problem.” This is no different.
“Because we see ourselves as separate and things happening outside
of ourselves, we tend to think we are absolved of any responsibility, but,
the opposite is true,” explains Dr. Hew Len. “Even if it sounds harsh,
whether we’re conscious of it, or not, just by listening to the news, we
feed into what we hear and then act out accordingly.”
Demonstrating its powerful effects, Hawaiian therapist, Dr. Hew
Len, cured an entire ward of criminally insane patients without ever
meeting any of them. He did so by healing himself, using “Self-I-
Dentity Ho’oponopono (SITH), with astounding results.
He revealed that the secret to this is that we are all connected and
that nothing is ‘out there’ without residing within us too. He claims, “If
we think or experience it, we own it.”
When doing Ho’oponopono, it is not important who you are speaking
to - God, your body, partner, situation, whatever. The order of these four
steps is also unimportant. The pertinence is in your desire to clear your
mind of any negativity and in your sincerity.
The four steps are: (1) I’m sorry, (2) Please forgive me, (3) Thank
you, (4) I love you. When we allow ourselves to heal and release, we
make room for what we really want - love, joy and freedom.
The Shape of Things to Come
By: Susan Goldfein / Susan’s Unfiltered Wit
A New Year and a “New Us.” It was precisely
this concept which led me to conclude it’s time to
rethink human anatomy.
Adaptation is key to survival; species that don’t,
become extinct. Even the woolly
mammoth shed his fur coat to
morph into the Asian elephant.
I’m not suggesting we pawn
our coats, but changes I am
proposing will help humans
adapt to the Technology Age.
These need to happen now –
before it’s too late.
Pudgy thumbs are so yesterday.
They worked for our primate
ancestors, and tree-climbing
sloths. Fine for grasping but
outdated for texting or tweeting.
And what do we do more of today – grasp or text? And when was the last
time you climbed a tree?
For the speed and accuracy required to operate small keyboards. a
longer, thinner, pointier thumb is so much more efficient and completely
possible. Didn’t fins become extremities as organisms moved from water
to land?
I also suggest refining the index finger. Still useful for pointing (and the
guilty pleasure of cleaning one’s nostril) it’s not sufficiently streamlined
for maximum benefit on the tablet or e-reader.
Leave the middle finger. It remains adequate for its dedicated purpose.
We need a third eye on top of the head. This would prevent disasters
such as stepping off curbs into
oncoming traffic because the
two we’ve relied upon for visual
cues are now focused downward,
staring into smart phones.
Ophthalmologist’s visits might
take longer, and baseball caps
would have to be redesigned.
These are small inconveniences
compared with avoiding
accidents, and skirmishes
among angry people constantly
bumping into each other.
Consider another set of ears.
Odd-looking at first, but very practical. We can stuff two with ear buds,
while the other two are ready to process important sounds, like the person
shouting because you’re about to step into an open manhole.
And how about the convenience of an actual built-in blue tooth?
As we accommodate, some organs might disappear due to disuse. Since
social networking doesn’t require actual verbal communication, vocal
cords, like tail bones, may become a vestige of a past life.
Adaptation isn’t perfect. Humans have been upright for 6 million years,
and evolution hasn’t perfected the spine.
But if we continue to keep our necks bent forward, endlessly staring
at iPhones, we may eventually reassume the horizontal posture of our
ancestors. Perhaps some problems are best solved by going backwards.
The Beer Run
By: Chuck Dean / Vet 2 Vet
Peter Farrelly’s movie, “The
Greatest Beer Run Ever”
starring Zac Efron as John
Donohue, known to his friends as “Chickie” is a fun
movie. The year is 1967, and the Vietnam War is in
overdrive.
Chickie is a Merchant Marine, which gives him
liberty when on land to booze into the night, snooze
into the day, and cheer the progress of the troops on
television. While hanging out with his buddies in a
bar they decide that their friends fighting in ‘Nam
need to know they care about them.
And the bright idea was born to take them all a
beer. So Chickie, being a merchant seaman, says he
can do it, and sets out to take them all a beer. I love
it…naivete at its best, but a true story.
That’s a very short movie review, and the production
itself can seem like a feel-good comical soiree. However, there’s a lot of
water under the bridge that the audience never had a genuine chance
to swim in.
The only reports civilians got at home was what came into their
living room through the TV - and we veterans know that such nebulous
reporting was flawed. That’s a long story in itself, and we’ve lived with
it now for half a century, so I’m not going to continue to beat an old
horse.
While Hollywood says it’s a true story, embellishment
always runs rampant in Tinsel Town. And the truth of
this story (along with some quirky military technical
shortcomings) changes complexion a few times,
which most veterans getting a little irked.
I’m hoping that not many get bent out of shape
because the adventure has some real merit that
demonstrates our service in Vietnam. For instance,
the portrayal of the TET Offensive, and how it
materialized in Saigon, was a golden part of the
account.
It has never been told like that before, and it had
some real honesty rendering that scary time for
many service people. It took a comical story…a true
story…and served as an educational platform for all
of us who were not in Saigon at them time.
Chuck Dean served as an Army paratrooper in Vietnam and
through that experience was led to address the many transitional
issues veterans struggle with. He is the author of several important
books for veterans. All can be found on Amazon at: http://www.
The Death of Auto Shows
By: BJ Killeen / Down the Road
You probably remember being a kid and going
with your parents to check out all the new
models at the local auto show.
It was the easiest way to see all the new cars by
going to one place instead of trekking all over town from dealership to
dealership. It was also a place where the manufacturers could stage big
debuts of the latest and greatest in technology, performance, and safety.
Fast forward to now, and most people are shopping online. They can
compare models across manufacturers, get pricing for all the options,
and even know exactly how much their monthly payments will be.
As we’ve seen since the beginning of the industrial age, new
technologies make previous ones obsolete. No more telephone
operators, elevator operators, pony express, or streetlight lamplighters.
It’s just the way it is.
Back then their loss was lamented, but time marches on, with or
without us. And so it goes for the auto shows. As more people shop
online, the need to shop at the show is becoming obsolete.
At the New York Auto Show this past spring, manufacturers like
Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Acura, Honda, Porsche, and others didn’t bother
coming. Same is true for the largest show in the country, the North
American International Auto Show in Detroit, which saw displays from
mostly Detroit-based manufacturers.
It’s not because they don’t have new models to introduce; it just
comes down to return on investment. Are the millions they spend to
create those giant display really bringing in buyers?
Most of them don’t believe it anymore and are turning to
“experiential” events like local ride and drives, or sponsoring concerts
and festivals. Eventually, the big auto show spectacles will be completely
gone, especially since the focus of the automotive industry continues to
be less about our love affair with the car and more about it becoming
just another electrical appliance that moves us from one place to
another.
Once the auto shows have disappeared, it may not be long before
brick and mortar dealerships follow behind. Time will tell.
Packing Tips
By: Lisa Kemmerling /
The Fashionable Traveler
As we roll into the New Year, many people
(myself included) are preparing for their 2023
travel schedule. With that come decisions on what to pack and how
many suitcases are necessary.
I’m often asked, “How do I condense my clothes so that I only have
to pack 1 bag.” This is the million-dollar question!
As a Fashionista, I tend to over pack and find myself bringing home
too many clothes that were unnecessary. To that end, it starts with
finding the right bag.
One Thing or Another
By: Crystal Merryman-Sarbacker /
Out & About
awoke with a head of steam this morning.
I There was so much to do.
My husband, Ray, and I were in the midst of renovating our house,
and almost everything was ready for the workmen to begin. In fact, as
the photo shows, the carpenters had already stripped the doors from
every cabinet.
Yes, we were ready to begin our renewal project, but there was a
problem. I couldn’t get out of bed or even lift my head off my pillow.
Just 48 hours earlier we had been enjoying a family dinner, when one
of the guests remarked something about Covid rearing its ugly head
again. She casually mentioned she might have been exposed, but we
were up to date on all of our shots, so we thought we were safe.
One that you can carry on, to avoid the airline fees that can be up to
$75 per bag. If you’re traveling internationally often, they’ll allow 1-2
free bags depending on the airlines.
Many companies make luggage that’ll fit under the seat or
comfortably overhead. My previous line of work put me on a plane
every other week, and I learned quickly that a different outfit each day
was a waste of space.
Mixing and matching is the key! Pack only the essentials and use
the 2x2x2x2 concept: meaning 2 pairs of pants, 2 blouses or shirts
for a man, 2 pairs of shoes, (e.g., tennis shoes and dress shoes) and 2
overlays, e.g., jacket/sweater. This will leave room for other essentials,
such as toiletries, makeup, etc.
On a recent trip to Portugal last year, I still packed only 1 bag. In lieu
of the jacket/sweater I replaced it with a dress and skirt to intermix with
my blouses and tops.
It’s also a good idea when traveling to pack a foldable bag inside
your larger bag, for those treasures you find along the way.
After 11 trips in 2022 consisting of 92 days and 3 countries you would
think I have it down to a science by taking the bare minimums. Yet I
still find myself over packing and purchasing new styles while on my
travels.
I’ll close with one of my favorite quotes from Theodore Roosevelt:
“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are. I’m still
learning and one day I’ll master the art of packing.
May your travels in 2023 take you places that make your heart soar.
38 January 2023
I could hardly believe it when two days later, Ray and I both woke
up with a modern version of the plague and on the very day our house
renovation was to start!
Thankfully the workmen we had reserved from Home Depot
were pros and they quickly assessed the situation, removed all their
equipment, and stored our new wood shelving in our garage. They
suggested we select a date later in December when we had regained
our health.
The really good news, though, was within a couple of days our
fevers started to drop. Initially, we’d called our doctor to see if he had
something magical in his office, and amazingly he said “yes!”
So, if you start running a fever, feeling faint, coughing, etc., there
are new products that can help you determine if you have Covid. The
first item is readily available and is called Flowflex, Covid-19 Antigen
Home Test. Their ads claim it’s “Easy to Use”, “Accurate”, and “Has
Quick Results.”
If you’re sure you’ve got Covid, you’ll need a doctor’s prescription
for the most effective drugs like Benzonatate. But the new prescription
star is Pfizer’s Paxlovid. Their packaging is complete, with thorough
instructions.
On the downside, some patients complain that Paxlovid has a
metallic aftertaste, but in a few days with any luck you may feel much
better. And by the way…Happy 2023!
Henderson Tour
By: Kathy Manney / Around Our World
Henderson’s Water Street District is also
Henderson’s city center. Recently Water Street
has experienced extensive new development,
which includes Lifeguard Arena.
In 1927, magnetite was found in the Nevada
desert. The discovery expanded Nevada’s
production of mined minerals.
Before World War II, magnetite demand was
minimal. And then, the incendiary materials
in German bombs dropping on England were
found to contain magnesium. To win the war,
Nevada’s magnetite was sought. Magnesium
became a “wonder metal.”
This location was chosen for Hoover Dam’s
proximity and abundant power, since large
amounts of electricity were needed to process
magnesium. Construction began in 1941 on a
large Basic Magnesium factory and took only
a few months to assemble the plant.
In 1942, the town was home to five-thousand people by 1942. And
by 1943, 16 million pounds of magnesium had been produced. Engine
housings and explosives utilized the magnesium and in 1944, enough
magnesium had been supplied and there was a surplus.
As the war wind down, the plant closed and the town, now considered
war surplus, nearly perished before the government gave land and
facilities to the state. The wartime town was named in honor of Charles
Henderson, a former U.S. Senator. By 1953 Henderson was incorporated.
Henderson’s downtown historical walking tour offers an informative
and vibrant interpretation of the city’s early
growth. Starting with Henderson’s inception
that supported wartime efforts during World
War II’s industrialization to the radiant city
Henderson is now.
Henderson’s walking tour signage includes
many city firsts, bringing to life people
and events that built the vibrant wartime
community. Interesting facts include how
Water Street was named, the community
impact Basic Magnesium made and how a
community meant solely as temporary for
wartime workers grew to become Nevada’s
second largest city.
To begin the self-guided historical tour, visit
Henderson’s City Hall for a walking tour map
or simply drive downtown, stopping when you see a sign and read its
noteworthy storyline that offers a capsule history of Henderson.
Kathy draws her articles from a diverse personal background. She
hopes readers enjoy her column as much as she enjoys the writing
and sharing.
By: Burt & Dianne Davis / Our Vacation
During an optional excursion as part of a
Viking cruise in October
of 2022, I learned first-hand a great deal about
the German occupation of Bergen, Norway during
World War II. I was part of a group that visited
the Fjell Fortress, a 30-minute drive from Bergen.
The fort was designed to defend the coast of
Norway. Its main construction began in August
1942 and was completed a year later. Between 1,500
and 2,000 Russian POWs were used as slave labor in
the construction. Many perished.
Our guide told us that more than 400,000
German soldiers were stationed in Norway before
the war’s end in 1945. He explained that Germany
felt that the occupation of Norway was critical to
defending the North Sea against Great Britain.
Bergen, due to its location and harbor was a
natural target. It was invaded and overrun by
Germany in 1940 after putting up minor resistance. Germany built
their major submarine base in Bergen.
It became the object of numerous allied bombings. But, due to its
40 January 2023
Learning About Bergen at War
heavy concrete walls, it was virtually indestructible.
The greatest damage was done to the city of Bergen itself. The
Germans built The Atlantic Wall stretching from
Norway to Spain in order to thwart a potential Allied
invasion.
The fort’s main artillery piece, a huge 11-inch
gun, had an accurate range of 20 miles and was
fired for the first and only time in August of 1943.
It’s shock wave broke glass and knocked down small
structures in the area.
About 250 Germans were positioned inside the
fort and 1,000 outside. All to ensure that that Allies
would not be able to invade Norway.
We saw that the lives of the soldiers were
depressing. The fort was a labyrinth, almost like
living in a cave with dark tunnels and cramped
living spaces. Except for the officers, there was no
hot water. The conditions were cold and damp.
I imagine that the soldiers were relieved when the
war ended. Seeing it first-hand brought this part of history to life for us.
The older you are, the greater the likelihood
that one day, not too far off, you may need to
downsize your home, move in with your kids, or
enter an elder care facility.
Believe me, parting with personal effects to adapt to upcoming
limitations in space can be just as emotionally distressing as having to
give up a beloved person or pet.
Now, whilst you aren’t under immediate pressure, now is the time
to get rid of stuff - trash, old newspapers and magazines, expired
medications, out of date coupons, and broken accessories. Then make
written lists relating to the ultimate disposition of the rest of your
possessions.
Safe Nest is a good destination for your ill-fitting clothes. They also
welcome Halloween, Graduation, and other special-occasion garments
Examine cherished pieces, ones that you’ve previously looked at,
then replaced exactly where you found them. If those items are not
bequeathed in your Will, it’s wisest to give them to someone who will be
honored to accept because they know how much you treasured them.
Otherwise call a charitable institution.
To separate expendable stuff, find containers, mark each one:
Clear the Clutter!
January 2023
The Will to Survive
By: Dianne Hahn / Back in the Days
Here it is January and guess what? Sitting in
the corner of my family room, thriving,
(glorious, as a matter of fact, with its bright red
flowers and vivid green leaves) is my Christmas poinsettia.
Have you ever noticed that poinsettias don’t die? They are beautiful,
but once they arrive, they absolutely refuse to expire. They hang around
- sometimes into the summer!
Nothing looks more ridiculous than a red, healthy poinsettia,
sitting there in all its glory, in March… April… May. Yes! even June!
Poinsettias are Christmas plants for Pete’s Sake!
They’re definitely out of place in the summer.
One year when we lived back east, I tried to stop watering a poinsettia,
but I didn’t quite have the heart to do so entirely. I gave it a bit of water
now and again.
No matter what I did, over or under water, it flourished! Finally, I
got so sick of looking at it that I put it outside in the garden in the
winter…and even that didn’t persuade it to expire.
Guilt flowed through me as I gently set it down in the frigid cold in
the backyard. I kept peeking out the window to see if it was wilting (and
hopefully not suffering) from my cruelty.
The plant remained bright and happy looking! My guilt turned to
surprise. As days passed, the surprise shifted to astonishment. Finally,
anger blossomed. The audacity of the bloody plant!
How was I ever going to get rid of it? For all I knew, the roots would
grow through the bottom of the pot and secure themselves into the
earth. Before I knew it, I’d have a 3-foot poinsettia bush dominating my
carefully planned flower garden.
Don’t laugh. I’ll bet it could happen!
Okay, I’m getting carried away. The plant is beautiful. It’s hardy, and
best of all, it has the will to survive! I respect that.
But please, don’t ever give me a poinsettia for Christmas…it might
magically find its way into your back yard come January! Yup, it
could happen! The will to survive, you know.
Your Indoor Plants
By: Howard Galin / Happy Gardening
Happy New Year Desert Gardeners!
During the past months, we have concentrated
on our outdoor landscape and/or have been busy
preparing for our recent holiday season. As a result,
we may have overlooked taking care of our indoor
gardens.
Fortunately, January provides the time to work
on our indoor plants and for planning for next
season’s landscaping. Before focusing in on our
2023 outdoor garden, take the time to look at your
indoor plants.
Repot any indoor plants that have been in the
same container for at least two years. Replanting into new, larger
pots will untangle roots and will stimulate nutrient absorption and
encourage healthy plant growth. Adding new potting soil will return
needed nutrients depleted over time.
All indoor plants require a feeding of indoor plant food. In addition,
the soil should be aerated to allow oxygen to surround the roots and to
prevent “non-draining and waterlogged” soil.
If needed, add potting soil to cover any exposed roots. Mist indoor
plants often with water to keep leaves hydrated and to remove airborne
dust and debris that may settle on leaves.
By pruning indoor plants, (removing long straggly stems and “out
of control” growth), you will make your plants more robust and
visually appealing. Remember that indoor plants remove toxins from
the air and provide oxygen to your home. Help them to do their job!
In early January, to prepare for the 2023 Outdoor
Growing Season, you should finish any remaining
pruning, and cleanups and complete irrigation
improvements and repairs. Also, since we have not
had any appreciative rainfall this winter, you can
manually succulents need irrigation.
Plan for future additions by referring to seed and
plant catalogues and doing some on-line research
on plants you may be interested in growing. Start
visiting the nurseries as well!
By mid-January, (with increased daylight hours and warmer
temperatures) it will be time to implement landscaping ideas
formulated earlier. While it may still be chilly outside, stay warm
indoors setting up a “mental blueprint” of what you want to grow and
how you’re going to grow it.
The Fabelmans
By: Renee Riendeau / Movie Revelations
This is the semi-autobiographical life story of
Steven Spielberg released in November, PG-13
and 150 minutes long. This fictionalized version
of his life story takes us back to the 1960s in Arizona and captures the
family warmth at that time.
He also recalls a complicated family upbringing but a love of movies
and filmmaking. The film promotes a romantic worldview that teaches
viewers to “follow your heart.”
Spielberg, being the super director that he is, realizes the power of the
film and the love of the art and story. Each frame shown on screen is
beautifully shot and edited, making each scene look fantastic.
He worked with Tony Kushner, his frequent collaborator (West Side
Story, and Lincoln) and made lots of money for decades with giant
sharks, adorable aliens, etc. to Lincoln. Spielberg’s films have a
technical crispness even when loaded with fantastic elements.
January 2023
A young Canadian, who was auditioned by “Zoom” - Gabriel La
Belle, got the lead role of Sammy. He did a terrific job.
Other actors are Paul Dano, father, a practical minded computer
engineer; Michelle Williams, mother, the imaginative parent; and Seth
Rogen, father’s friend, and colleague, who later takes on a serious role
but often reminded Sammy, “he is not your Uncle.”
As displayed in the movie, Sammy inherits aspects of both parents.
He recalls his “loss of innocence” and remembers when his parents
decided to divorce. His heart was broken, and anger developed when he
caught his mother and “he is not your Uncle” kissing.
One of the highlights of the film is when his parents take Sammy to
see Cecil B. DeMille’s “The Greatest Show on Earth.” In Sammy’s mind
he was already a film maker and decided he now had a career.
This film won the Audience Award at the Toronto Film Festival and
critic Caryn James stated it was “One of the year’s most genuinely
heartfelt films”. Others say, “Emotional crowd pleaser”, “Sweet but
sanitized”.
I enjoyed the film and could relate to the 60s details. I’m giving this
film a 4 out of 5 screen rating.
