ACCOMMODATION UPDATE with Maeve McKenzie 2023: THE YEAR OF ACCESSIBLE TOURISM QHA REVIEW | 36 With the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games fast approaching, the Queensland Government has declared 2023 as The Year of Accessible Tourism. Making your services more accessible to visitors can open valuable markets for your business. With the Paralympics in mind, there’s been no better time to get the ball rolling than now. The 2021 National Visitor Survey conducted by Tourism Research Australia (TRA) revealed that only 5% of operators are accessible tourism ready. This is incredible to think when around 18% of Australians are living with a disability, and an additional 22% have a long-term health condition requiring assistance. Further to this, in 2021, travel groups including people with disability or long-term health conditions in Australia accounted for 17% ($13.5 billion) of total domestic day and overnight trip spend. The accessible travel community includes people with a disability, a long-term health condition or mobility needs. It also includes their travel party. Other visitors also benefit from improved access, such as: • the elderly • those with temporary needs, mobility issues or medical conditions • parents with prams • multi-generational family groups The need for accessible tourism in Queensland is an issue that can clearly no longer be ignored, but most businesses don’t know where to begin addressing this necessity. Inclusive travel advocate Martin Heng has worked with the Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) and Tourism Australia to develop and deliver the new Accessible and Inclusive Host training program. The three modules in the program focus on being culture, product and service ready to upskill and prepare your business to successfully welcome guests from all life stages, backgrounds and abilities. Martin’s key takeaway for program participants is ‘the most important step to becoming an accessible tourism business is having an attitudinal change and inclusive mindset to overcome barriers’. In addition to this, steps you can implement into your business to become accessible tourism ready include: • Encouraging inclusive language (person-firstlanguage ‘person with disability’) • Encouraging staff to get educated on the core elements of accessible tourism (be flexible, offer help and speak to the person with disability directly) • Creating mobility maps (highlight accessible carparks, lifts and bathrooms) • Ensuring you have an accessible website (including alt-text, venue details for different accessibility needs, mobility maps and FAQ’s) • Incorporating the universal design principals into your business (equitable, flexible, simple and intuitive, perceptible information, tolerance for error, low physical effort and space for approach and use) • Installing additional railings, braille, tactile signs and tactile tile indicators • Utilising BindiMaps or Blindsquare in your venue If your business is interested in further information or assistance with becoming an accessible tourism ready, you can utilise the tools below. • The Australian Tourism Export Council’s (ATEC) Accessible and Inclusive Host Program • Tourism and Events Queensland’s Accessible Tourism Workshops • Accessibility Audits through groups such as Get Skilled Access • Case studies from other businesses who have implemented accessible tourism (these include Tourism Tropical North Queensland, Australia Zoo, Eat Street, Sandstone Point Hotel and RACV Royal Pine Gold Coast) • Apply for the National Quality Tourism Framework’s Accessibility self-assessment module Embracing inclusive travel is a must, and the travel industry can no longer ignore it. That’s why in 2023, the AHA and QHA are including The Disability Inclusion and Access Award in the Awards for Excellence Program. This award recognises those businesses that ensure everyone’s experience is exceptional. 2023 is an exciting year for inclusive travel, and our industry should be ready to embrace it as it’s really no more than good customer service.
