Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: George’s Place on the corner of Beach Avenue and 

Perry Street. This dynamite year-round lunch spot is a part of the Kara 

Restaurant Group — Shamone, Younger Brother, Vintage, Michael Kara 

Catering and Venturini Events. It’s really become our go-to at the office 

when we’re looking to grab takeout, especially in the off-season when 

things are quiet. 

The vibe: The Beach Avenue location has a narrow dining room 

with booths that stretch from front to back. They also have an open 

kitchen to see the behind-the-scenes action. We arrived a bit early to 

pick up our order, so we were able to enjoy the view of the beach from 

a bench for a bit. It was a nice day out, so we only wish we could’ve 

grabbed our food and ate in the sand, but we’ll keep that in mind for 

next time as we get closer to spring. 

The food: We’ve all really established our usuals at George’s, so it 

didn’t take long to decide what we’d like. Nicole went for her favorite 

turkey and brie sandwich and Katie went for the same. BUT Kayla threw 

a curveball at us and decided to try their classic cheeseburger which 

turned out to be a double cheeseburger. It was huge and extra delicious. 

The one thing we all get excited for is the French fries that come with 

our sandwiches. The way they’re sliced so thin WITH the skins — think 

of thick potato chips — makes them stand out from most restaurants. It 

was a tasty and filling lunch as always. 

The takeaway: George’s Place has been a local legend in Cape May 

for a while. Even more so now as they have other George’s locations 

popping up including one in Wildwood Crest and Cape May Court 

House. There aren’t many areas in the county you can be at this point 

without a George’s within a quick drive’s distance. They also have a 

great breakfast menu which we will enjoy sometime soon. We’re partial 

to the waffle Nutella and limoncello French toast so maybe we’ll switch 

it up. That probably won’t be our beach picnic but stay tuned because 

that sounds like an afternoon to good to pass up.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Any day now, some benighted soul 

is going to announce that the “robins 

are back.” In truth, they’ve been 

here all winter. The hardy thrushes 

winter as far north as southern 

Newfoundland and Cape May hosts more 

wintering robins than breeding birds — tens 

of thousands of robins that roost in white 

cedar stands and spend their days foraging on 

holly berries. 

So why are they suddenly in your yard? 

Worms! Worms go deep in winter and emerge 

in spring to exchange genetic material. With 

climate change, worms are emerging earlier 

and staying close to the surface in winter. I’ve 

seen hundreds of robins strutting along sunwarmed 

roadsides. But robins have started 

singing and that’s sure a sign of spring. 

Found at some point of the year all across 

North America, it is likely the one bird species 

known to all Americans. Breeding in 

willow thickets in the arctic, porches in suburbia 

and along tree-lined streets in prairie 

towns, about the only place robins don’t 

nest is Florida, parts of Texas and the desert 

southwest. But they do winter in these 

locations. Strong fliers, the birds regularly 

turn up in the UK where they may encounter 

their namesake, the European Robin, a small 

chat that thrives in yards and has a rusty 

face and breast. A Turdus thrush, American 

Robin is more closely related to the European 

Blackbird of four and 20 baked in a pie fame 

than the European Robin. True thrushes 

(members of the genus Turdus) are found 

world-wide and occupy similar niches. In 

North America there is one other Turdus, 

Clay-colored Robin whose tropical breeding 

range extends to the Rio Grande Valley. 

All are accomplished vocalists and American 

Robin’s song, which is a series of caroled 

phrases, is an easy song to learn in case you 

have established this to be the year you finally 

learn bird songs. The birds begin singing just 

before dawn and have been known to sing all 

night where illumination shines bright, like 

gas stations and sporting arenas. 

Other early spring vocalists you should 

be on the listen for include House Finch 

whose hurried, rambling warble often ends 

on a discordant note. Northern Cardinal 

song is a repeated series of notes. Northern 

Mockingbird is a complex ensemble of song 

snatches. There is a smart phone App called 

Merlin which records and identifies the 

vocalists around you. While not infallible, it 

is remarkable how Merlin can sort through 

singing birds near and far.

As we continue our journey through 

Oscar’s most celebrated films of 

2023, you may want to keep a scorecard... 

and brace yourself. Last week, 

we looked at the film with the most 

nominations (11): Everything Everywhere All at 

Once. This week, we look at one of the two 

films that receive the next highest number 

at 9: All Quiet on the Western Front. By the way, 

the second film to get 9 nominations was The 

Banshees of Inisherin. 

Why would you skip All Quiet on the Western 

Front? Not much for war movies, you might 

say. Well, that’s not a bad reason. When it 

comes to depicting war, this film is brutal. 

The story is as epic as it is ingrained in modern 

society. The book was first published in 

1928 through German newspapers and 1929 

as a book by German World War I veteran 

Erich Maria Remarque. The first film version 

appeared in 1930 from Universal Studios and 

received four Oscar nods and two wins: Best 

Picture and Best Director. Not too shabby. 

This iteration of the film is simple. The

message — war is hell. The story — four 

German friends enter military service for “the 

Fatherland” only to be disillusioned by the 

atrocities of war. It’s a clear anti-war sentiment, 

one that resonates in its remake nearly 

100 years later. Can we agree that wars must 

unfortunately be fought since megalomaniac 

leaders push their people to wage unjust battles? 

Good people cannot simply stand by and 

watch that happen... thus… war. 

Would it be better that war not be waged 

by these dictators (or dictator-esques)? Yes. 

But that seems unlikely since these men ( yes, 

let’s call them what they are) still love to stand 

behind their ideology like bullies on a playground 

— and push. Certain as the sunrise. 

One scene depicts a clearly deranged 

German General commanding his soldiers 

into battle despite an already-signed peace 

treaty that is hours away from becoming a 

reality. Almost like an insane leader rejecting 

the democratic process and commanding citizens 

to raid a capital. Yeah… like that. 

Netflix released the film, and the studio 

was second only to A24 in picking up 

Oscar nominations. Overall, the streaming 

service has 14 nods behind A24’s 17 (the latter 

released Everything Everywhere All at Once). 

The traditional studios (Disney, Universal, 

Paramount, Sony, etc.) fell behind in total 

Oscar nominations. Strange new world 

indeed. This film was striking with bold and 

ghastly imagery. But its grit was genuine, and 

it’s a worthwhile film if you got the stomach.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, get a good laugh! 

Humans like to laugh. We always 

have — and now, science can tell 

us how long we’ve been laughing. 

According to anthropologists, 

the aboriginal people of Australia 

shared jokes with the first outsiders they 

encountered in 1770. Before this, they had 

been isolated, genetically, for about 35,000 

years, so humans have been joking for at least 

that long. According to historians, our jokes 

have not grown more sophisticated. The earliest 

joke, recorded on a Sumerian cuneiform 

tablet from 1900 BCE, deals with flatulence. 

It may seem funny that smart people 

devote their energies to research silliness, 

but humor provides important insights into 

human psychology. These findings are proof 

that humor serves an evolutionary purpose. 

Humor helps ease tricky, or even dangerous, 

social situations. Humor helps us to form 

connections within a family. For example, 

my grown nephew still laughs at “What’s 

the biggest pencil in the world?” because he 

remembers it got a laugh when he was six. 

(Pennsylvania, in case you don’t have a sixyear-old.) 

“Humor workshops” in long-term 

care facilities are shown to reduce anxiety and 

loneliness. Humor is also essential in courtship 

— a similar sense of humor helps couples 

navigate awkward moments early on and prepares 

them for the challenges of a long-term 

relationship. After all, if you can’t laugh when 

the in-laws impose or when one kid gives the 

other a bad haircut, life is going to be dismal. 

Humor also boosts our body’s immunity. 

Laughter can ease physical pain by producing 

natural painkillers. If you laugh until your 

stomach hurts, you’re getting a workout. After 

a good laugh, you’ll feel improved stress levels 

and sense of well-being.

Mid-Winter Comedy Show, scheduled for 

February 25 at Willow Creek Winery, 160

event is a fundraiser for the DeSatnick 

Foundation, which benefits people living 

with paralysis and spinal cord injury, and it 

brings the local community together during 

the winter doldrums. Enjoy comedians Sheila

special guest Will Lawler. There will be an 

auction, beverages by Willow Creek Winery 

and Slack Tide Brewery, and delicious food.

Of course, they did bring a nice bottle of wine, 

but that didn’t make up for the food cost. I 

wanted to ask them if they’d chip in, but my 

wife threatened to send me to the couch for the

special meaning, but she’s angry that I won’t 

delete them. I could say I deleted them and 

not do it. I would never use them maliciously.

Of course, you must delete them. You do 

not strike us as someone who would be so 

duplicitous as to say one thing and do another. 

Honor this request knowing you then do not 

have to worry about a future love interest using 

them with malice aforethought. Not everyone

will help you to move on. The Answer Lady 

suggests you treat yourself to Sunday Brunch

a bit shy in the beginning but will lean in for 

pets once he’s comfortable. He enjoys being 

outside and exploring his surroundings — he 

especially loves car rides! 

HARLEY is a three-year-old, 75-pound mastiff 

mix who thinks he’s a lap dog. He loves 

people and will spend as much time as he can 

with them to enjoys pets. Harley has good 

leash manners and is learning more useful 

behavior cues. He also loves long car rides. 

Harley would be best as the only pet in the 

house but is very good with children. 

SAMANTHA is a sweet 12-year-old girl who 

came to the shelter when her owner died. 

Despite her age, she is full of energy and 

loves going on walks. Samantha also enjoys 

car rides and is quite affectionate. She would 

make a wonderful family pet and while she 

is good with dogs and children, she prefers a 

home without cats.
