EVENTS CASE STUDY Poole Harbour Festival A family friendly event, second only to Camp Bestival as Dorset’s largest event of its kind We talk to founder and organiser Ben Dyas about the challenges of running an event where half its catchment area is water, and how working with the community has helped reach over 20,000 attendees. Describe your event and how many people it attracts? The Poole Harbour Festival is a great value family event and has grown to be the biggest family friendly live music festival in the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole conurbation, with Camp Bestival being the only bigger family music festival in Dorset. We are expecting to reach 20,000 visitors over the three days in 2023. Explain a bit about your venue and your history with it The site (Baiter Park) is a council owned park next to beautiful Poole Harbour and we have been using the site for various events since 2016. It is a lovely location but it’s so exposed on the coast that “HAVING WORKED IN HOSPITALITY AND EVENTS FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS I REALISED THERE WAS A LACK OF QUALITY FAMILY AND MUSIC EVENTS LOCALLY” we have wind issues every year, sometimes severe. What is the event’s history and what made you decide to run it? Having worked in hospitality and events for a number of years I realised there was a lack of quality family and music events locally. In 2015 we designed the event which was then approved by the local authority. We held the first festival in 2016. Since 2018 my event development manager, Serena Wren, and I have worked together to evolve the event successfully each year. Now in its seventh year the festival features an outdoor main stage, big top second stage, dance tent and children’s WWW.OPENAIRBUSINESS.COM 43
