EVENTS
“WE WERE VERY LUCKY AND GRATEFUL
THAT OUR CUSTOMERS WERE MAINLY
HAPPY TO ROLL THE 2020 TICKETS OVER
TO 2021, WHICH REALLY SAVED US FROM
BANKRUPTCY”
did run this event in 2021 and it
was great to be back. Like many
people we didn’t hear about the
first round of the culture recovery
fund but were very grateful to
be awarded a small grant in the
second round and also received
some small council grants which
helped keep the wolf from the
door. We were very lucky and
grateful that our customers were
mainly happy to roll the 2020
tickets over to 2021, which really
saved us from bankruptcy.
What additional challenges have
you faced?
Customers! If you draw a 30 mile
catchment area around Poole
and Bournemouth, half of it
would be in the sea and no one
lives there! With limited numbers
of available customers we have to
design our events to be appealing
and affordable to the people
who live on our doorstep. Most
national event companies who
hold an event in our area do not
return after the first year.
How have you financed the
event and how profitable is it?
The event is financed through
ticket and bar revenue with some
trader and sponsor revenue. It is
normally profitable but earnings
from 2021 and 2022 have really
just covered the losses from
Covid.
What are your future plans?
To develop similar events in
Southampton and Portsmouth.
What advice could you give
to someone coming into the
industry?
Beware – it’s not for the
faint hearted. Even if you do
everything right the weather
can still ruin your event and only
pure determination will get you
through to the next one.
Do your research, assume
nothing! Also researching other
events is one of the joys of the
job.
Work with people who are as
passionate as you.
