Where We’re Eating
Here’s what the EZ team were chowing on this week
Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: Fins Bar & Grille on the corner of Carpenters Lane and
Decatur Street. It’s the large blue building next to the Ugly Mug — you
can’t miss it!
The vibe: Fins is always so bright and welcoming from the moment
Opening for the season on March 17!
you step in the door. There are tons of windows allowing for natural
light and the beautifully lit bar is just to the left when you walk in. Check
out the huge fish tank right in the center of the room. There’s tons of
aquatic life circling the coral structures — fun for all to watch while
waiting for a table or enjoying a drink. We just picked up some takeout
so we couldn’t grab a seat, but we plan to make time for that come
summertime!
The food: We were definitely hungry seeing as we had our orders
ready to go by 10:30am. Nicole even asked Kayla if she had ordered
yet before realizing the time... that got a good laugh. Once they finally
opened, Kayla went for a buffalo chicken wrap and Katie did the same!
It’s the season of Lent and a Friday so Nicole went for the traditional
margherita pizza since she can’t eat meat. Well worth it, however —
everything was delicious. Fins is a favorite of Kayla so we usually hit it
a few times a year for the column... and on our own another handful of
times. The food is always fresh and the cocktails are fun. And with the
atmosphere they have going, who wouldn’t want to dine there?
The Sunday Socials: Every week during the off-season, Fins hosts
their Sunday Social with 50% of every check going to a Cape May organization
— Cape May Stage, East Lynne Theater, Cape May MAC and
many others. These run from 10:30am to 2:30pm and they offer quite a
bit. Great live entertainment, enticing brunch AND lunch menus PLUS
a make-your-own bloody mary bar and mimosas. Check out their website
for which organization is up next and support a good cause while
having a good time.
The takeaway: Fins is open daily with a great happy hour from
BEACH & PERRY, CAPE MAY
2-6pm (3pm on Sundays). Visit their website for their menus and more!
Enjoy the quiet beauty of this 62-acre farm in West
Cape May and then indulge in the farm-to-table
treats for breakfast or lunch. The soups, salads,
sandwiches and juices are excellent.
Check out why Congress Hall’s restaurant is a favorite
of locals as well as hotel guests. They serve classic
tavern food for breakfast, lunch or dinner, with a
choice of indoor and outdoor dining.
Relax by the docks and watch the ferry boats come
and go while you enjoy cool cocktails and fresh food.
Have some fun at the outdoor bar and restaurant at
the Cape May ferry terminal.
The Boiler Room has a chic industrial vibe with
exposed brickwork, stainless steel table tops and a
dance floor that’s often bopping. Feast upon brickoven
pizza with draft beers.
Congress Hall’s lounge got a very groovy, very sexy
renovation. The bar was enlarged (and moved) and
there are all sorts of seating nooks from which to
enjoy great drinks and a great vibe.
Step inside the new eatery and retail store at the
Cape May ferry terminal. Enjoy a quick meal or snack
before hopping on the ferry and shop all the Exit Zero
and new Ferry Park Swag!
Comfy joint in the middle of the mall, featuring a raw
bar, surf-n-turf entrées, sandwiches and burgers, plus
outside tables for some great people-watching!
As you’d expect of an Irish pub, this is the place to get
Guinness and good pub grub. The burgers and meat
pies have been receiving rave reviews.
If you wake near dawn these days, you
are certain to be serenaded by the soulful
lament of Mourning Doves. These common
and widespread resident species
begin courting in late February and are
frequently seen in flight as a threesome — a
mated pair and a hopeful hanger on. In flight
you can often hear their wings whistling but
more commonly, the birds are seen perched
shoulder to shoulder on utility lines resembling
tear drops on a stick. When foraging on
the ground birds bob their heads. At feeders,
they prefer open platforms and millet.
One of 17 dove and pigeon species in
North America, Mourning Dove is the most
widespread of our native species. Rock Pigeon
is native to Europe. Mourning Dove is also
North America’s most popular game bird
with over 16 million killed annually, a figure
that does not even cut into the bird’s reproductive
capacity. More troublesome to the
doves are Cooper’s Hawks which consider
the MODO the perfect size for medium-sized,
bird-catching hawks. Audubon knew the
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
Cooper’s Hawk as the “Great Pigeon Hawk,” a
reference to the hawk’s partiality for the now
extinct Passenger Pigeon. In the absence of
the once-abundant forest pigeon, Cooper’s
Hawks have taken to targeting MODO. If
you feed birds in your yard, you have surely
come upon ferry rings of gray-brown feathers
beneath your feeder, the plucked signature of
a successful hunt.
Nesting season for doves ranges from
March to October and pairs may nest five
times during this period, laying two eggs
per nesting attempt. Birds may live 30 years
although five-to-ten years is more typical.
Given the bird’s fecundity and longevity, it is
clear Mourning Dove can shrug off a nominal
degree of predation.
New Jersey is one of the few states, not yet
inundated by the larger collared dove which
appeared in Florida in the 1970s and by the
next decade had marched across the continent.
Larger and bulkier than Mourning Dove,
the species was originally native to India, but
expanded into Eurasia, then the West Indies,
now here. While larger than Mourning Dove,
Collared Dove seems not to compete with our
native species whose breeding population of
150 million appears stable.
Every once in a great while local birders
are treated to the sighting of a White-winged
Dove — a desert species with a widespread
pattern of vagrancy. And the tiny, crop-tailed
Common Ground Dove has also occurred
here.
Epic films aren’t made, but anointed.
There are few films that carry the
power and emotion of The Woman
King. Unfortunately, it joins a growing
list of distinguished films that
prove Oscar can shamefully show its racial
bias, overlooking what should be celebrated
achievements. It received no nominations.
Oscar winner Viola Davis plays Nanisca,
warrior general of the Agojie, an all-female
army from the African Kingdom of Dahomey
in the early 1800s. The story follows Nawi,
a village teenager played by Thuso Mbedu,
whose father grows tired of her not accepting
the clearly abusive husbands he finds for her.
He drops Nawi at the army training grounds
offering her as a recruit. From there, Nawi
must prove herself in a squad training for war.
The war is against an enemy pervasive for
hundreds of years: slave traders. In the early
1800s, the slave trade was tragically active,
and the brutality with which it was enacted
was nothing short of demonic. Nope, we don’t
say, “oh, that was just the way it was back
then” or “you have to understand the times
long ago.” No. Enslaving people was protected
(overtly or passively) by evil people. Period. Is
that too harsh? Are you offended and rather
not hear these historical facts? Don’t want
to teach them in school? Careful. As George
Santayana said, “history is doomed to repeat
when it’s not remembered.”
This plot unfolds with expert art direction
and storytelling. The Woman King is based
loosely on factual events, with some apparent
artistic license. Davis is outstanding as is
Mbedu. In fact, the ensemble works in unison
to walk us through a skillfully told story.
So why did Oscar not give one nomination
to The Woman King? The British Academy
Film Awards gave it two — Best Director and
Best Actress. It didn’t win there, but hey it was
nice to be nominated. So why does Oscar do
this? The last time this happened was with the
biopic Just Mercy (2019) telling the compelling
story of Bryan Stevenson. That movie is in my
top 10 favorites of all time — and it didn’t get
one Oscar nomination.
But that is Oscar. All at once, it acknowledges
when the film industry has notable
achievements, loves movies about itself way
too much, and disturbs us greatly when it
snubs. However, it’s still the gold standard for
movie awards, so we look for its approval. I’m
not. The Woman King was one of the best and
more important films of 2022 — better than
other films that received nominations. Spread
the love, Oscar. Spread the honor.
The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, head to the Nature Center for a harborside chat!
The Nature Center has brought back
Harborside Chats, and there’s something
cozy about being invited for a
chat. Compared to a lecture, a chat is
more relaxed, and no one is likely to
test you after wards. It’s the perfect word for a
talk that will teach you a little something but
not require you to become an expert.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt exemplified
that feeling with his famous “fireside chats.”
Though he was not the one who came up
with that name, FDR wanted to think of his
radio audience as a group of people gathered
around his fireside, according to press secretary
Stephen Early. The first fireside chat on
March 12, 1933 covered the banking crisis and
was delivered in plain, but not sugar-coated,
language. In less than 15 minutes, the president
described the mechanics of banking,
recounted the timeline of the crisis, and
announced the government’s plan, asserting
that it needed help from the American people
to work. He said, “We have provided the
machinery to restore our financial system; it
is up to you to support and make it work.” The
effect was immediate — people who had been
hoarding cash lined up to make deposits. By
using radio to deliver information and invite
people to be a part of the solution, Roosevelt
created a sense of intimacy and trust.
FDR gave 30 additional fireside chats
throughout his presidency, announcing the
topics in advance. Listeners expected to be
challenged and had to pay attention — the
chats were delivered in an informal manner,
they covered complex topics. The chats were
researched and rehearsed, with the text of
each speech released to the newspapers in
advance. Before his February 23, 1942 chat on
the progress of the war, FDR invited listeners
to be prepared with maps so they could follow
along. Americans welcomed the information,
despite the harsh truths. As my mother
remembers, the chats united the country and
explained the need for American soldiers to
be in far places with the unfamiliar names.
The Harborside Chats at the Nature Center
of Cape May are also likely to have their share
of unfamiliar names. Perhaps you’ll learn
about sperry cars, capstans, drishti, backbarriers,
or how to pronounce boatswain and
forecastle. These chats run through March 23
and bring a variety of experts to the Nature
Center to discuss many topics. Registration
is required at njaudubon.org/centers/naturecenter-of-cape-may
or call 609-427-3045.
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Camille Peruto
Noelle, Christian
The Answer Lady invites inquiries from
gentle readers on all manner of relationship
quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
My fiancé and I have been friends with
another couple for years. In fact, “Fred” and
“Mary” introduced us by arranging a blind/
double date. We want Fred to be the best man
and Mary my maid of honor. The problem
is that Fred and Mary split up in January.
Now Mary refuses to be my maid of honor
or even attend the wedding. Isn’t this totally
unreasonable? It has put me in the worst
position because I must now choose between
my two sisters which I was trying to avoid in
the first place. What can I say to make her suck
it up for one day? — Irked Bride
Dear Bridezilla
Just for one moment, think about your
friend, her feelings and her discomfort at
walking up the aisle opposite the person
she thought would still be her husband. The
Answer Lady suggests the one to “suck it up for
one day” is you. Flip a coin, pick a sister, and
focus on your beautiful day. Why would you
want to introduce such negative energy and
into your universe? Now pop over to Red Oak
and treat your bridesmaids and the maid of
honor to something special for their efforts in
making your day special.
Dear Answer Lady
I’ve avoided contact with my mother
for over a year. I find her toxic, critical, and
a bloody boor to be around. I’ve been able to
sidestep her Sunday brunches using work
as an excuse. However, my work schedule is
changing for the next two months making me
all too available. Unfortunately, my siblings
are aware and are pressuring me to “get along
for an afternoon,” because “she is old and may
not be with us much longer.” I say I’ve done
my bit. She also torments me by lavishing
attention on my brother and older sister. It is
hard to sit through. — Prodigal Daughter
Dear Prodigal
Take care of yourself. Make yourself scarce
on Sundays. There are plenty of things to
occupy you — the Nature Center of Cape May
and the Bird Observatory have great activities
which will educate and make you feel good. As
a solution, invite your mother to the Blue Pig
for brunch away from other family members.
It may go better without the “competition”
hovering, vying for her attention.
BOSTON is an energetic four-year-old boy
who loves to be with people and is eager to
learn new skills. Boston loves to play in the
yard, chase toys and go on long walks. He has
great leash skills, and his impulse control is
improving daily. Boston would make a wonderful
companion for a family with older children.

BUZZ was left outside of an apartment complex
and brought to the shelter when people
realized he was once a pet and had been abandoned.
He’s a one-year-old boy and warms up
quickly. A quiet adult home is just what Buzz
needs. He is up to date on all vaccinations and
neutered. If interested in adopting Buzz, contact
the shelter.
CREEK is half of the bonded pair that is Creek
and Cove. These sisters came to the shelter in
awful condition from a hoarder house. After
many months, they are healthy and ready for
a new loving home. Creek is a silver tiger cat
and completely blind in her one eye. She is
still very friendly and would do well in a home
with other cats and children.
COVE is half of the bonded pair that is Cover
awful condition from a hoarder house. After
many months, they are healthy and ready for a
in great health. She is affectionate and playful.
