Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, head to the Nature Center for a harborside chat!
The Nature Center has brought back
Harborside Chats, and there’s something
cozy about being invited for a
chat. Compared to a lecture, a chat is
more relaxed, and no one is likely to
test you after wards. It’s the perfect word for a
talk that will teach you a little something but
not require you to become an expert.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt exemplified
that feeling with his famous “fireside chats.”
Though he was not the one who came up
with that name, FDR wanted to think of his
radio audience as a group of people gathered
around his fireside, according to press secretary
Stephen Early. The first fireside chat on
March 12, 1933 covered the banking crisis and
was delivered in plain, but not sugar-coated,
language. In less than 15 minutes, the president
described the mechanics of banking,
recounted the timeline of the crisis, and
announced the government’s plan, asserting
that it needed help from the American people
to work. He said, “We have provided the
machinery to restore our financial system; it
is up to you to support and make it work.” The
effect was immediate — people who had been
hoarding cash lined up to make deposits. By
using radio to deliver information and invite
people to be a part of the solution, Roosevelt
created a sense of intimacy and trust.
FDR gave 30 additional fireside chats
throughout his presidency, announcing the
topics in advance. Listeners expected to be
challenged and had to pay attention — the
chats were delivered in an informal manner,
they covered complex topics. The chats were
researched and rehearsed, with the text of
each speech released to the newspapers in
advance. Before his February 23, 1942 chat on
the progress of the war, FDR invited listeners
to be prepared with maps so they could follow
along. Americans welcomed the information,
despite the harsh truths. As my mother
remembers, the chats united the country and
explained the need for American soldiers to
be in far places with the unfamiliar names.
The Harborside Chats at the Nature Center
of Cape May are also likely to have their share
of unfamiliar names. Perhaps you’ll learn
about sperry cars, capstans, drishti, backbarriers,
or how to pronounce boatswain and
forecastle. These chats run through March 23
and bring a variety of experts to the Nature
Center to discuss many topics. Registration
is required at njaudubon.org/centers/naturecenter-of-cape-may
