ATTORNEY-GENERAL The Honourable Shannon Fentiman MP STRENGTHENING WOMEN’S ECONOMIC SECURITY QHA REVIEW | 24 This month we are celebrating Queensland Women’s Week (5 to 12 March 2023) and this year’s theme is Empower her voice; Secure her future. The theme is a celebration of women and girls who have stood up to be heard and acknowledges the fundamental right of every woman and girl to equally participate and be safe in all areas of our society including the workforce. Access to secure jobs is essential for Queenslanders, especially women. We know that economic security is the cornerstone of achieving gender equality, because a lack of economic security amplifies every other barrier that prevents women from achieving equality. At its most basic level, it ensures access to a stable income, financial independence and workforce participation which are vital protective and enabling factors that contribute to safety, empowerment, secure housing, and access to better health, education and training outcomes. I am proud that Queensland’s hotel sector includes a strong workforce of women – more than 54 per cent of our pubs, taverns and bars’ employees are women. Women are making their mark in the sector, both at the bar and behind it. I would like to commend the QHA in helping set the tone for a culture that acknowledges and celebrates the skills and qualities women bring to the table. The QHA’s long-running, annual Women in Hotels event is a great example of the value it places on the impressive contributions women make to the industry. But we know there is still a long way to go. Australian women earn about $263 less per week than men and they retire with about 23 per cent less superannuation. Even in industries where women are overrepresented, women earn less than men. That is why the overarching priority of the Queensland Women’s Strategy 2022-27 is genuine economic inclusion and successful economic participation for women and girls. The Palaszczuk Government is committed to working with employers to support women into good, secure jobs. This starts with changing workplace cultures, creating equal leadership opportunities for women and men and actively promoting flexible work arrangements that break down traditional gender roles. As we look to strengthen women’s economic security and secure futures for women in the hospitality industry, there is a range of tangible actions that can be taken in workplaces to make a real difference, including: • recognising the gender pay gap and conducting regular audits of your business to assess women’s roles, seniority and pay parity • understanding that change must come from the top, and make gender equality part of core business • seeking out women for development and promotion to counter the societal conditioning that women should be in ‘second place’ • introducing and promoting the uptake of flexible workplace policies such as paid parental leave for everyone, including men • calling out and acting against sex discrimination, sexist language, sexual harassment and sexist workplace norms, without causing further harm to women. More information about our commitments to achieving economic security for Queensland women can be found in the Queensland Women’s Strategy 2022-27. I look forward to continuing to work with industry to make sure women’s voices are heard and support more women to build long term, fulfilling careers in our hotels.
