The Glass Doorknob

On my kitchen window sill is a
small dish of memories; stones my
son gave to me, a piece of crystal that
catches sunbeams, but one item holds a
treasure trove of a zillion memories…a
glass doorknob.
It belongs on a porch door in
one of our first apartments
in a century-old house.
It had fallen off in my
hand one day so it was
replaced and I threw it
in the junk drawer. Years
later I found it. When I
held it the glass was warm,
like an orb holding the past, and
all these memories came flooding
through me.
The large screened-in porch became
our favourite room all summer long into
the fall. I filled it with hanging plants
and ferns, even a small fountain. With
the walls painted white, filled with white
wicker furniture, outdoor turf carpet,
and colourful cushions, it became our
private garden. We lived on the second
floor and the porch was surrounded by
pine trees creating a curtain from the
world going by. My son and I would
snuggle in our pyjamas watching the
storms, or read just before bedtime.
We had my sister-in-law’s baby shower
here on a beautiful summer’s day, later I
hosted a Fathers’ Day get together with
my husband and father who are no
longer with us. When company
came we always sat out
on the porch. I made
my sister’s wedding
bouquet and flowers on
the porch. The space
inspired me with its light
and peacefulness.
My husband enjoyed
sitting out until late in the evening
just talking. It was a tropical retreat and
brought the outdoors into another living
space. Even on hot summer nights the
large screens on the ten-by-ten porch
would carry breezes in but kept us
hidden in the large surrounding trees.
Wildlife filled the large trees, the birds
woke us with their chatter and the
occasional squirrel found its way onto
the porch with chaos to follow.
All these memories and so much
more in a split second, from just holding
a glass doorknob.

in this world who don’t have wonderful parents
like you do.”
My mother taught me about ANTICIPATION.

“If you don’t stop crossing your eyes, they are
