Frances’ Helpful Hints
by Frances Botham
1) Did you know that lemon extract will remove black
scuff marks from luggage?
2) Bay leaves have the amazing quality of being able to
deter insects form invading old trunks and cupboards.
3) Dry mustard will remove onion odour from wooden chopping boards.
4) Hate scrubbing the burnt-on crud on your barbecue grill? Well the
supposed solution is to place the grill on grass and let it stay there
overnight. Apparently the dew and the enzymes in the grass loosen the
burnt-on grease. How about that for a far-fetched cleaning tip? I haven’t
tried it yet, but you never know, it might work like magic.
5) For an environmentally friendly and definitely non-toxic air
freshener, saturate cotton balls with pure vanilla and place them where
the need arises.
6) Keep a bottle of coarse salt beside your kitchen sink and use it for
scouring rather than cleansing powders.
7) Have you been in the position when you want to clean some silver
items and you’ve run out of cleanser? This is a simple solution that works
fairly well and is fun to experiment with: Boil some potatoes and save
them for supper. Place your silver items in the potato water and let them
soak there for at least an hour. Wash in warm sudsy water and polish
dry. You will be amazed at how easy it was and at how sparkling clean
your silverware looks.
8) Everyone hates mildew that forms on some lovely old items. Make a
paste of equal parts of bleach and dish soap and apply it directly to the
mildew. Brush it off. Then wipe off with a damp cloth and let dry. Repeat
briefly if necessary.
9) Have you just acquired an old china cupboard or hoosier that has a
peculiar odour that you just can’t get rid of no matter how much you
clean it? The answer may be as simple as placing saucers of vinegar in
it and closing the cupboard for a day or two. Replace with fresh vinegar
and repeat the process for another few days and you will be pleasantly
surprised in most instances at how well this really works.
10) And I’m still on my cleaning kick with the old kitchen aids. One
quart of water, 1/2 cup of vinegar and 1/4 cup of lemon juice makes a
very good concoction for cleaning glass to a sparkling shine.
