Skeeter Barlows is #1! See page 23
Blackburn radio hosts a Munch Madness contest
to have people vote on the Favourite Restaurant in
Sarnia-Lambton and Skeeter Barlow’s is #1 for 2023.
This grill and pub boasts a patio overlooking Lake
Huron, great food and an unpretentious atmosphere.
The Best of Windsor-Essex
Tourism Windsor-Essex-Pelee Island also hosts a contest
to select fan favourites, this time too many categories to
name them all here but you can find them at www.bestofwindsoressex.ca
Kingsville did well again this year being voted Best Shopping District for the third
year running, and other winners included Cindy’s Home & Garden as Best Boutique
Shop, Pelee Island Winery for Best Winery Experience, and Jack’s Gastropub for the
Best Lake-to-Plate dining. Amherstburg’s Wolfhead Distillery won for Best Art-of-the-
Cocktail.
We were there when they were only 50! See page 57
As they celebrate their 75th year, we can never say enough good things about
Pinecroft in Aylmer - if you’ve never been there you’re just cheating yourself. At
heart it’s a pottery studio in a man-made, pine forest that was a labour of love passed
on by the family’s ancestors, but it’s also a fantastic gift shop, wonderful restaurant
and much more. Take a trip down Roger’s Road and you’ll be glad you did.
While you’re in the neighbourhood! See pages 55 & 57
Within a few minutes drive of Pinecroft you’re also going to find Shaw’s Ice Cream
where they’re also celebrating their 75th anniversary and
New Sarum
came out with a stunning, new, nostalgic look
Diner
a few years back. Then
there’s the timeless New
Sarum Diner which is
a landmark along Hwy.
#3 and is turning 80 this
year! More and more
great food - bring an
appetite!!!
Fly Me to The Moon, or to Exeter
There’s an ad on page 47 for GAIA but we wanted
to encourage those not familiar with it to look
further into this. Luke Jerram’s famous installation
is an exact replica of the Earth that’s over 20 feet
wide with surround sound composition by BAFTA
award-winning composer, Dan Jones. It’s visiting
Exeter as part of the 2023 Huron Waves Music
Festival season and will be suspended from the
ceiling of Trivitt Memorial Church Auditorium from
June 1st to July 3rd. This is the sculpture’s first
Canadian Festival appearance. Tickets should be
reserved in advance.
The Antique Tour is easier than ever. See page 72
We made a long overdue change in our last issue that you may have noticed. For
years there were “Antique Tour” pages where all the ads for antique shops were
grouped together. The problem was that there were too many shops to fit on one
page so we had two or more “tours” in different parts of the magazine. And, you
also wouldn’t see an antique shop alongside the other shops in a specific region.
Daytripping takes a reader from town to town to find the best stops, so we now have
these ads with other stores they’re close to (i.e. Tillsonburg Antiques is now on the
Tillsonburg page). However, we also now have one back page that’s free to all these
customers with a map and a listing of all the antique shops together in one place.
We still have many farm markets grouped together on pages 35-37, and breweries/
wineries/cideries/meaderies are together on page 28, so you still need to do a bit of
hunting and planning, but it’s a start.
Events and Town Wide Yard Sales are back! See pages 68-71
We could almost handle two years of no events, but two summers with no Town
Wide Yard Sales was torture for some of us! They made a comeback last year but
should be back in full force - there are over 60 on our events list on pages 68-
71. Gather your quarters and loonies and get on the road early. Please remember
that these are usually “unofficial” events and you should be prepared for anything,
including disappointment. We suggest having a backup plan in case there aren’t as
many sales as there will be in Petrolia, the year’s first event on April 28-29 and one
of the largest. Bring bicycles if you can—it’s a perfect way to maneuver through the
streets while exploring a different town.
