It’s come to a head as it was revealed how often the water companies have discharged raw sewage into British rivers in recent years with the government failing to clamp down on it. Under current UK rules, the water companies are allowed to discharge raw sewage under a process known as ‘storm overflows’ – where exceptional rainfall overloads the aging drainage system. These restrictions have been watered down (if you’ll pardon the pun) in recent years and what was supposed to happen only during exceptional situations is now taking place with alarming regularity. But it’s not just in the UK, this is happening all across the world. Our drains and sewage systems are old and many need replacing, which is easier said than done when they are below ground. Sadly, though, much of this pollution and sewage spills is due not only to inadequate systems but sheer economics. Not only it is it hugely expensive to upgrade all that infrastructure (which inevitably eats into the profits the water companies make) but it’s also quicker and cheaper to flush out raw sewage into our watercourses than spend money treating it (which, as I recall, is actually a key part of their job!) And then there is the issue of agricultural run-off – the chemicals and 3,511 6,466 pollutants that leech out from farmland when it rains. Thankfully, there ARE some people trying to control this but it’s a hard task. The water guardians in the UK are in a difficult predicament because of the way funding works and who pays what. In Europe there is an EU-funded project called Digital Water City with scientists from major cities looking at how digital technology can improve water quality so our rivers are safer to swim in. In the US, the Clean Water Act – which is now more than 50-yearsold – attempted to tackle much of this head-on with legislation and permits and yet there are still many high-profile pollution events and some areas are simply not covered by the law. And that has a massive knock-on effect on our industry. Without decent water quality in our rivers, we have reduced stocks of fish and that means fewer interested anglers. And even if the fish were able to survive, who wants to spend their free time fishing in a sewer? But we DO have a voice. The tackle industry globally not only understands the water environment and has conservation and preservation at its heart, but it also has the ears of billions of anglers who all have a vote and a say.
