Issues in the health technology assessment
of treatments for pain
The Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) provides
the health service in Scotland with advice
on the clinical and cost-effectiveness of all new
medicines with the aim of improving the
process for the managed introduction of new
technologies. The focus of this presentation
will be to give an overview of the work of the
SMC, how economic models are used within
its process and some of the main issues that
arise with these health technology assessments.
Discussion will be given on the trends
seen in the evaluation of the treatments for
pain that have been submitted to SMC, alongside
consideration of particular concerns that
arise in the health economic evaluation of such
treatments.
