Per Hansson is pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> clinical pain research<br />
at Karolinska Institutet and a specialist<br />
in neurology and pain medicine at the Karolinska<br />
University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Hansson is head <strong>of</strong> and a senior consultant<br />
at the <strong>Pain</strong> Center, Department <strong>of</strong><br />
Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, and head<br />
<strong>of</strong> Clinical <strong>Pain</strong> Research, Department <strong>of</strong> Molecular<br />
Medicine and Surgery at Karolinska Institutet.<br />
He received his dental and medical<br />
degrees from the Karolinska Institute in 1979<br />
and 1986, respectively, and his PhD in physiology<br />
at the same institute in 1985. He was appointed<br />
associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> physiology in<br />
1991 and pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> clinical pain research<br />
in 2000.<br />
Peripheral and central neuropathic pain,<br />
somato-sensory testing, endogenous pain controlling<br />
systems and functional brain imaging<br />
represent major areas <strong>of</strong> interest in Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
Hansson’s research.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Hansson is a reviewer for many scientific<br />
journals and has served as co-editor <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Pain</strong> Reviews, on the editorial board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pain</strong>,<br />
Clinical Updates and is currently field editor for<br />
clinical medicine/neurology <strong>of</strong> the European<br />
Journal <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pain</strong>. He has published close to 150<br />
journal articles and book chapters, and has<br />
lectured at numerous conferences and symposia<br />
worldwide. He is co-editor <strong>of</strong> 2 books<br />
published by the IASP Press.<br />
Per Hansson is a member <strong>of</strong> several pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
societies such as the International Association<br />
for the Study <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pain</strong> and has served<br />
as scientific secretary <strong>of</strong> the Swedish Society<br />
<strong>of</strong> Algology and as scientific advisor to the<br />
Swedish Medical Product Agency. From 2003-<br />
2006 he was president <strong>of</strong> the Scandinavian<br />
Association for the Study <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pain</strong>. He is currently<br />
Honorary Secretary <strong>of</strong> the European Federation<br />
<strong>of</strong> IASP Chapters.<br />
