Barbara Milani holds a Masters degree in Pharmaceutical<br />
Chemistry and Technology from<br />
the University <strong>of</strong> Ferrara in Italy and a post<br />
graduate Diploma in Tropical medicine from<br />
the Institute <strong>of</strong> Tropical Medicine "Prince<br />
Leopold" in Belgium. For the past 10 years she<br />
has been working in the area <strong>of</strong> public health<br />
in different capacities ranging from serving as<br />
a front-line pharmacist to advising on procurement<br />
and supply systems to contributing to<br />
essential medicines policy development and implementation.<br />
She has gained her international<br />
expertise working in Africa with NGOs including<br />
Médicins Sans Frontières and later with The<br />
Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and<br />
Malaria and the World Health Organization<br />
(WHO).<br />
In her current role with the WHO Access to<br />
Controlled Medications Programme she is<br />
technically responsible for managing the development<br />
<strong>of</strong> WHO's treatment guidelines on<br />
pain.<br />
Barbara Milani has recently presented at the<br />
International Association for Hospice and Palliative<br />
Care workshop on access to opioids in<br />
Latin America in Lima, Peru and served as an<br />
organizer and facilitator <strong>of</strong> the WHO guidelines<br />
development meeting on paediatric persisting<br />
pain, Rockefeller Conference Center, Bellagio,<br />
Italy.
