Mild<strong>en</strong>stein Castle<br />
A Symbol of Power Carved in Stone<br />

M<br />
ild<strong>en</strong>stein Castle was first m<strong>en</strong>tioned<br />
in 1046 and is one of the oldest castles<br />
in Saxony. Salian kings, Staufers and the Wettin<br />
margraves all held court here. The Wettins built<br />
the castle’s first dungeon cells behind the meter<br />
thick walls. The mere sight of the many locked<br />
doors, torture instrum<strong>en</strong>ts and practices of the<br />
medieval p<strong>en</strong>al system in the prison wing,<br />
which is still preserved today, truly makes one<br />
shudder.<br />
The wood<strong>en</strong> construction of the Gothic granary<br />
floor, the keep, the Romanesque Castle Chapel<br />
with its three-winged altar and the medieval<br />
Knights’ Halls never cease to impress. »Frieder<br />
Berg«, the keep brought to life, tells of its<br />
experi<strong>en</strong>ces in the castle. The interactive search<br />
for the treasure of William the One-Eyed offers<br />
hours of puzzle fun for the whole family and<br />
culminates in an escape room.<br />
In the restored manor house, the exhibition<br />
»The Court of the Young Lordship – Mild<strong>en</strong>stein<br />
Castle as the Elector’s Nursery« complem<strong>en</strong>ts<br />
the family-fri<strong>en</strong>dly, interactive offerings. The<br />
»Princes’ Parlor« and the three Knights’ Halls<br />
are available for weddings, family celebrations<br />
and confer<strong>en</strong>ces in a unique setting. In the Black<br />
Kitch<strong>en</strong>, you can cook medieval cuisine over<br />
an op<strong>en</strong> fire.<br />
