»During my lifetime, the Margraviate of Meiss<strong>en</strong> flourished. I cleared forests, reclaimed land and<br />
founded lordships. Cities such as Leipzig and Freiberg were founded. Proud, fortified castles secured<br />
the new settlem<strong>en</strong>ts and trade routes. Some of them are so well preserved that ev<strong>en</strong> today, one<br />
might think that at any mom<strong>en</strong>t the castle gate could op<strong>en</strong> and the lord of the castle and his companions<br />
would charge across the drawbridge on their steeds.<br />
Bowery and keep, knights’ halls, castle chapels and dreary dungeons take you on a magical journey<br />
back to the Middle Ages. The spirit of the Middle Ages is palpable in the castles of Mild<strong>en</strong>stein,<br />
Gnandstein and Scharf<strong>en</strong>stein. Monasteries such as the Cistercian abbey in Altzella are outstanding<br />
examples of medieval culture and education. Its library was one of the most important in the empire.<br />
My eponymous wealth made the Margraviate of Meiss<strong>en</strong> shine with spl<strong>en</strong>dor. I owed this to the<br />
Saxon soil, for rich silver deposits were discovered in the d<strong>en</strong>sely wooded mountains not far from<br />
the monastery in 1168. A »Berggeschrey« (mining rush) began, drawing miners and hewers, charcoal<br />
burners and merchants to Saxony. On request, I gave everyone the freedom to mine in the Ore<br />
Mountains. This was an inc<strong>en</strong>tive – and the mining duty, known as the »Bergzehnte«, filled my<br />
coffers ...«<br />
