ith its striking white gables, Colditz Castle is one of the most<br />

beautiful C<strong>en</strong>tral German architectural monum<strong>en</strong>ts of the<br />

16th c<strong>en</strong>tury. It served as an important POW camp for high-ranking<br />

officers of the Western Allies during World War II; Winston Churchill’s<br />

nephew and the nephew of the th<strong>en</strong> British King George VI were also<br />

among its prisoners. Secret radio rooms, tunnels brok<strong>en</strong> through the<br />

masonry and a secretly built glider are examples of the many tales told of<br />

the many creative escape attempts in the »Escape Museum«. The book<br />

<strong>en</strong>titled »The Colditz Story« and its film adaptation have made Colditz<br />

world famous.<br />

Today, guests from all over the world can <strong>en</strong>joy a princely stay at the<br />

European Youth Hostel with its modern rooms, fri<strong>en</strong>dly ambi<strong>en</strong>ce and<br />

outstanding cuisine. Guests can <strong>en</strong>joy the unique atmosphere of Colditz<br />

Castle at ev<strong>en</strong>ts and concerts, in special exhibitions and on guided tours<br />

such as »In the Footsteps of the Prisoners« featuring a prisoners’ feast.<br />

From 2024, the stately and institutional rooms can be <strong>en</strong>tered and discovered<br />

for the first time. The »HistoPad«, an interactive tablet guide,<br />

takes guests on a journey through time in this fascinating lost place. The<br />

tour leads through the R<strong>en</strong>aissance and into the time of World War II.<br />
