Insider Tip of the Romantics<br />
High atop Oybin, the most famous rock massif of the Zittau Mountains,<br />
tower the fascinating ruins of the Bohemian royal castle and<br />
the Oybin monastery. They became world famous in the 18th and 19th<br />
c<strong>en</strong>turies thanks to Romantic painters such as Caspar David Friedrich<br />
and Carl Gustav Carus. What started out as a simple fortification was<br />
expanded into a well-def<strong>en</strong>ded complex in the early 14th c<strong>en</strong>tury.<br />

The German Emperor Charles IV built an imperial house on the castle<br />
grounds and donated a monastery to the Order of the Celestines. Its<br />
imposing church was built with the help of the famous Prague cathedral<br />
builders. Monastic life <strong>en</strong>ded with the dawning of Reformation in the<br />
16th c<strong>en</strong>tury – and nature reclaimed Oybin. In combination with the<br />
impressive natural features, the ruins of the medieval buildings form a<br />
unique <strong>en</strong>semble of nature and architecture and repres<strong>en</strong>t one of the<br />
highlights wh<strong>en</strong> visiting the Zittau Mountains Nature Park.<br />
