n the tri-border region, directly on the Neisse River, lies Germany’s<br />
oldest Cistercian conv<strong>en</strong>t: St. Mari<strong>en</strong>thal Monastery. Nine nuns<br />
curr<strong>en</strong>tly still live in the abbey, which was founded in 1234. Lovingly<br />
restored guest rooms, lounges and confer<strong>en</strong>ce rooms offer a relaxing<br />
atmosphere surrounded by beautiful nature. In addition to the monastery’s<br />
church, the gard<strong>en</strong> of biblical plants, its own apiary and the large meadow<br />
orchard, Germany’s easternmost vineyard is yet a further attraction for<br />
visitors to Ostritz.<br />

Annual highlights are the Easter Seed Riding and the Fruit and Wine<br />
Festival. The charming surroundings around St. Mari<strong>en</strong>thal provide<br />
ample opportunities for outdoor activities. You can explore the region<br />
betwe<strong>en</strong> the Zittau Mountains and the old town of Goerlitz on the<br />
Oder-Neisse Cycle Path. In addition, the Zittau, Jizera and Krkonoše<br />
Mountains are also perfect for hiking or the Lake Berzdorfer for cooling<br />
off after a walk. St. Mari<strong>en</strong>thal is part of the »Via Sacra«, a cultural route<br />
in the tri-border region of Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic that<br />
connects 20 sacral sights.<br />
