ing John of Saxony described the valley of the Mueglitz as the most<br />
beautiful valley in Saxony. Lau<strong>en</strong>stein Castle, built on a steep rock,<br />
is worth a visit not only because of its beautiful surroundings. A spacious<br />
resid<strong>en</strong>tial castle was built here in the 16th c<strong>en</strong>tury on the foundation<br />
walls of a medieval castle, and its owners decorated it with great artistic<br />
flair. Ev<strong>en</strong> today, you can admire the murals in the Bird Hall, the magnific<strong>en</strong>t<br />
vaulted stucco ceiling of the Coat of Arms Hall and the portrait<br />
sculptures in the Castle Chapel.<br />
Lau<strong>en</strong>stein Castle with Baroque Gard<strong>en</strong><br />
It may very well be possible that the impressive architecture also inspired<br />
Lau<strong>en</strong>stein’s most famous resid<strong>en</strong>t, George Baehr, architectural g<strong>en</strong>ius and<br />
builder of the Frau<strong>en</strong>kirche Dresd<strong>en</strong>. The castle, which is a UNESCO<br />
World Heritage Site as part of the Ore Mountains / Krušnohoří Mining<br />
Region, now houses the Eastern Ore Mountains Museum – with perman<strong>en</strong>t<br />
exhibitions covering the building history of the castle and chateau,<br />
the life and work of George Baehr, and mining and minerals in the region<br />
in more than 30 rooms.<br />
