Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Cape May Grilled Cheese Co. in the Washington Commons 

in Cape May next to Mario’s Pizza. 

The vibe: Inside Cape May Grilled Cheese Co. you’ll find a few 

tables to grab a seat at after you place your order at the counter. There’s 

plenty to look at while you wait — the walls are filled with famous paintings 

that include a hidden twist. You’ll find a grilled cheese in about 

every painting hanging on the wall including the Mona Lisa, American 

Gothic and Girl with a Pearl Earring. Music fills the room and its super 

fun and welcoming for all ages. 

The food: We’ve been craving Cape May Grilled Cheese Co. since 

our last visit and we got a little taste during a recent photoshoot for 

this year’s Cool Cape May book. Kayla went for what she considers 

“the best fries in the world,” their Jersey Jam fries featuring their homemade 

tomato jam, black garlic aioli and grated parmesan. Emma, our 

lovely marketing intern, enjoyed the Carolina-style grilled cheese — 

pulled pork, coleslaw and provolone. The tasty afternoon didn’t stop 

there. Owner Mike McCloskey suggested two of their summer specials 

that we couldn’t pass up. First, the Delco grilled cheese — pork 

roll, bacon, coleslaw, honey-chipotle sriracha sauce and cooper sharp 

cheese on sourdough. PLUS, the Smash Burger grilled cheese — homemade 

smash burger with diced tomato, pickles, red onion and their 

house burger sauce with white cheddar on Texas toast. In addition to 

these two sandwiches, they’ll also have a Tuna Melt grilled cheese and 

Chicken Caesar grilled cheese all summer long. 

The takeaway: Cape May Grilled Cheese is open 11am to 8pm Tuesday-Sunday 

for eat-in, take-out and, new this summer, beach delivery! 

Give them a call to place your order and let the team know which beach 

you’re relaxing at. They’ll meet you at the entrance to deliver your food 

— you’ll just have to make a quick walk but toward the promenade. 

Super convenient and now you can enjoy Cape May Grilled Cheese in

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

One advantage to being attuned to the 

natural world is that you are never 

bored. There is always something 

happening to engage the attentive 

mind — miracles at every turn. 

This afternoon Ma Nature was serving up 

Osprey and Otter. The riverside park near our 

home offers front-row seating to the universe 

and a constant parade of birds crossing the 

river. I make a game out of pinning names 

to them before mid-span, then following 

them in to see if I’m right. Grackles have a 

level flight. Red-winged Blackbirds bounce. 

Cardinals seem to struggle in flight. Too much 

tail, I suspect. Eastern Kingbirds have fluttering 

wings. Purple Martins glide a lot. Barn 

Swallows swoop and wheel. 

The Osprey in the Alpha nest appears 

to have young. The adults fuss about and no 

longer settle to incubate. Arrival to chicks 

about eight weeks. Three weeks till they fledge 

and then things really get boisterous. Hungry 

chicks filling the air with their strident “feed 

me” whistles. It seems like only yesterday I 

was waiting for the first Osprey to return to 

our river. Now the next generation is at hand. 

I share the park with assorted fishermen 

and casual viewers, one of whom got to see 

the otter after I pointed it out. Typically, the 

aquatic weasels hug the far bank but this large 

male was hugging the near bank and utterly 

nonplussed by my presence. Swimming with 

the tide, the animal took a left hand turn just 

before the bridge and headed for the slough 

that crosses the road into town. It is a favorite 

crossing point and sadly one that has claimed 

the life of more than one animal. I’m pretty 

injured to road-killed wildlife but a roadkilled 

otter seems particularly tragic. 

River Otter are found in fresh and saltwater, 

their presence is most often heralded 

by the silvery slicks of otter scatt deposited at 

prime crossing points. In Cape May, the South 

Cape May Meadows is particularly patrolled 

by otters, a tribute to the health of the aquatic 

environment. Fish and crabs are the animal’s 

primary prey, hence the silvery cast to the 

scatt. I’ve seen them swimming in Bunker 

Pond, Lake Lilly, Jakes Landing and Scotch 

Bonnet Creek near Stone Harbor. 

Yes, I know this is supposed to be a bird column, 

but I’m an equal-opportunity observer. 

Furred, scaled or feathered, if it crosses my 

path, it becomes fodder for my nature-calibrated 

eyes. For a really mind-bending experience, 

train your close-focusing binoculars 

on a flower blossom. It’s like stepping into a 

Georgia O’Keefe painting.

Our community was stunned at the 

passing of Stefan Prosky, a wonderful 

husband, father, son, brother, 

and friend. Stefan was curator for 

the Cape May Film Festival for 20 

years and an instructor for its film camp. 

Stefan was also a professor of film and 

animation, showcasing many of the films 

from his students. That was the essence of 

Stefan. Positive affirmations, building up, and 

kindness. Stefan was a “family first” and gentle 

man. His insights were fair and thoughtful. 

The film fest selections were in such good 

hands because of him. He also loved to examine 

how things worked — beyond their engineering 

to how they brought people together. 

Explorer, mentor, film buff… here are 

tributes to our “Tefman!” 

Annie Mullock, who held the festival 

together for many years, says, “Hearing the 

name Stefan floods my mind with precious 

memories of film camp, a place where, thanks 

to Stefan, no level of creativity was too far and 

no bad ideas existed. Stefan was a brilliant

My condolences to John and Andy. We are all 

poorer for this loss.”

the details that others would overlook. But he 

knew, and he passed on that knowledge with 

an infectious joy. He believed those intricacies 

built on each other were what make

times mate with whales, but “wholphins” have 

been born in captivity and the wild. 

Cape May offers a few dolphin-watching 

options. The two big boats have similar 

names and websites, so make sure you’re at 

the right place. The Cape May Whale Watcher 

(red boat — capemaywhalewatcher.com) 

and Cape May Whale Watch and Research 

Center (blue boat — capemaywhalewatch. 

com) have restrooms on board and snacks 

Orcas are in the headlines for attacking 

boats around the Iberian peninsula, 

so it seems like a good time 

to check on their local cousins. Pay 

attention to the smaller members of 

the order cetacea on a dolphin-watching tour. 

The Atlantic bottlenose dolphin is the 

animal we usually see frolicking along Cape 

May. Considered to be one of the most intelligent 

creatures on the planet, the dolphin 

remains somewhat mysterious to scientists. 

Dolphins travel in complex social groups, call 

each other by name, and sometimes care for 

disabled or elderly pod members. They “make 

friends” with other species. In Hawaii, scientists 

observed dolphins and humpback whales 

playing together, with the dolphin using the 

whale as a slide, then teaching other dolphins 

to do the same. In the Puget Sound, dolphins 

have been observed “hanging out” with southern 

resident orcas, who won’t eat them, while 

avoiding the identical Biggs orcas, who would. 

Scientists have yet to determine how the dolphins 

tell the two apart or why they somefor 

sale. The Cape May Whale Watcher is 

wheelchair accessible. Tickets are similar, 

about $40 for adults for two-hour cruises, $50 

for three-hours, with discounts for children. 

You can find specials online or in brochures. 

Reservations are strongly recommended. 

Prepare for your dolphin watching tour 

as you would for any other boat ride — shoes 

with non-slip soles, comfortable clothes that 

dry quickly, hat and sunglasses with straps, 

and sunscreen. Keep an eye on small children 

and don’t let them climb on things meant 

to keep them from falling into the ocean. 

Pay attention to the boat’s staff; in addition 

to entertaining you, they want to keep you 

safe. Have your camera ready, but don’t be 

disappointed if you don’t get THE shot of the 

animals. You’ll get more enjoyment out of 

reaction pictures of your group. Leave your 

camera or phone behind on the speed boat

a week, so I am well aware of gym etiquette. A 

six-foot, barrel-chested man came and asked 

me if he could use the machine I was using. I 

was halfway through my routine and told him 

I would be done soon. He proceeded to pace 

in front of me in a very intimidating manner. 

I am a woman and just over five-feet tall. He 

would’ve never approached a man like that. 

I stood firm and finished but was furious and 

now regret not confronting him. What do you

My best friend and I were at Harpoon’s by 

the Bay last Sunday where she met a guy that 

she really liked. I was so happy for her — she’s 

coming off a nasty breakup. They agreed to 

meet back at Harpoon’s the next night and 

all’s well, except — the minute she went to 

the bathroom, he asked for my number. I was 

afraid to say anything. They met the next 

night and are having dinner this weekend. She 

has a history of picking the wrong men, but I’m 

worried if I say anything she’ll turn on me. By 

the way, she has a good job and makes a ton of 

money. You see where I think this is going. —

themselves, but you can be there to pick up 

the pieces. The time to tell her about the phone 

number was at the moment it was happening, 

but it may not have mattered. You are a good 

friend, but often people who are successful 

in their work life are not so good in personal

friend is otherwise occupied, find another 

friend to go to Harpoon’s with so you can enjoy 

the sunset without worry.

ZEKE is a one-and-a-half-year-old boy who 

came to the shelter when his owner could no 

longer care for him. He is a happy pup who 

loves attention. Zeke is learning proper leash 

manners and enjoys his brisk walks. He also 

loves car rides and is crate trained. Zeke would 

make a wonderful companion for a family 

with older children. 

BOWIE is an active, seven-month-old puppy 

who came to the shelter when his family 

moved and couldn’t take him with them. 

He enjoys being with people and is learning 

appropriate leash manners. Bowie is good 

with children, sleeps in a crate and loves car 

rides. He would be a great addition to a family 

who will continue his training. 

COOPER is a sweet and lovable boy who lived 

with a family for two years, but they can no 

longer take care of him. He is a 115-pound boy, 

and his leash skills are improving daily, but 

he loves to explore his surroundings. Cooper 

would be better suited for a family with older 

children as he tends to be protective of his 

family.

faced financial issues. She is a three-year-old, 

quiet lady who wants a warm, peaceful environment 

to live. Coco is very friendly and loves 

attention — she warms right up to you when 

you pet her. She is up to date on all vaccinations

CUPCAKE had a home for 10 years with his 

sister before their owner moved and couldn’t 

bring them along. Initially, he and his sister 

were adopted together, but the adopters 

brought him back shortly after claiming he 

wasn’t housebroken. Cupcake uses his litter 

box every time at the shelter with no issues. At 

11 years old, he deserves a loving home. 

TOFFEE AND TWIX are two of seven cats 

that came to the shelter from a hoarder house. 

They were in horrific condition when they 

arrived, but have since blossomed into gorgeous 

house cats. Toffee and Twix are scared, 

but very sweet and a quiet home would be 

best. This pair would do well in a home with 

other cats and a lot of love.
