Austria's Commitment to the 2030 Agenda

Guided by the BKMC's mission to foster leadership for the Sustainable Development Goals, we have been closely collaborating with the Austrian Federal Chancellery since 2018 to advance the implementation of the SDGs in and by Austria. On the margins of the UN High-Level Political Forum 2023, we are very proud to launch the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens publication “Austria’s Commitment to the 2030 Agenda”. The publication covers national, European, and global efforts to implement the SDGs.  Against the backdrop of multiple crises, it is now more important than ever to find global solutions based on cooperation, partnership, and sustainability. Dive into our report and check out milestone activities, good practice examples, and initiatives of SDG implementation in Austria from 2019 to 2023.

Executive Summary<br />

The Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens<br />

(BKMC) focuses on <strong>the</strong> implementation<br />

of <strong>the</strong> United Nations (UN) Sustainable<br />

Development Goals (SDGs) in and by<br />

Austria and since 2018 established a close<br />

collaboration with <strong>the</strong> Austrian Federal<br />

Chancellery (BKA) <strong>to</strong> advance <strong>the</strong>se goals<br />

and <strong>to</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r streng<strong>the</strong>n Austria’s pioneerrole<br />

in <strong>the</strong> international sphere.<br />

In line with this commitment, <strong>the</strong> following<br />

publication is aimed at <strong>the</strong> general public<br />

with <strong>the</strong> key objective of spreading knowledge<br />

and awareness about <strong>the</strong> SDGs. More<br />

than ever, we are facing multiple global<br />

challenges and it is <strong>the</strong> responsibility of<br />

all of us <strong>to</strong> work <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong>wards a better<br />

future for all. The <strong>2030</strong> <strong>Agenda</strong> provides<br />

us with a valuable roadmap in this regard.<br />

Leading up <strong>to</strong> <strong>2030</strong>, it is crucial <strong>to</strong> reflect<br />

not only on multifold past achievements<br />

in Austria, but also <strong>to</strong> look <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> future:<br />

We must maintain a respectful dialogue<br />

and <strong>the</strong> engagement of all stakeholders<br />

<strong>to</strong> achieve <strong>the</strong>se common goals.<br />

The second Austrian Voluntary Review<br />

(VNR) on <strong>the</strong> SDGs, which will be presented<br />

at <strong>the</strong> UN in 2024, is being prepared<br />

since 2023 with wide spread stakeholder<br />

involvement in Austria. This publication<br />

does not claim <strong>to</strong> be a comprehensive<br />

or an official implementation report, but<br />

is intended as complementary <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

VNR, offering motivational perspectives<br />

on Austria’s SDG work. It is <strong>the</strong> diversity<br />

of interlocking processes that enriches<br />

<strong>the</strong> extensive SDG implementation in<br />

Austria. Thus, this publication highlights in<br />

particular miles<strong>to</strong>ne activities, best practice<br />

examples and initiatives from 2019 <strong>to</strong> 2023.<br />

The publication first provides an overview<br />

of <strong>the</strong> processes and approaches <strong>to</strong> SDG<br />

implementation in Austria and outlines<br />

Austria’s current implementation status<br />

by analysing relevant rankings and indices.<br />

This is followed by <strong>the</strong> main section which<br />

is divided in<strong>to</strong> a national, European and<br />

international chapter.<br />
