Austria's Commitment to the 2030 Agenda

Guided by the BKMC's mission to foster leadership for the Sustainable Development Goals, we have been closely collaborating with the Austrian Federal Chancellery since 2018 to advance the implementation of the SDGs in and by Austria. On the margins of the UN High-Level Political Forum 2023, we are very proud to launch the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens publication “Austria’s Commitment to the 2030 Agenda”. The publication covers national, European, and global efforts to implement the SDGs.  Against the backdrop of multiple crises, it is now more important than ever to find global solutions based on cooperation, partnership, and sustainability. Dive into our report and check out milestone activities, good practice examples, and initiatives of SDG implementation in Austria from 2019 to 2023.

The project “17 Museums x 17 SDGs” shows that museums and exhibition<br />

halls in Austria can focus not only on <strong>the</strong> past, but also on <strong>the</strong> future.<br />

The importance of museums and exhibition<br />

halls for a sustainable future is at <strong>the</strong> core<br />

of <strong>the</strong> “17 Museums x 17 SDGs: Goals for<br />

Sustainable Development” project by ICOM<br />

Austria in cooperation with <strong>the</strong> Austrian<br />

Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, <strong>the</strong> Civil<br />

Service and Sport (BMKÖS). 17 Museums and<br />

exhibition halls from all federal states across<br />

Austria were invited in 2021 <strong>to</strong> work on 17<br />

SDGs from February <strong>to</strong> December 2021. The<br />

assignement of <strong>the</strong> SDGs <strong>to</strong> individual halls<br />

was done by live lottery. Until <strong>the</strong> end of 2021<br />

<strong>the</strong> museums worked on <strong>the</strong> projects, which<br />

were also accompanied by communication<br />

measures. On 12th May 2022, <strong>the</strong> results of<br />

<strong>the</strong> initiative and a respective publication in<br />

this regard were presented <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> public in<br />

<strong>the</strong> context of <strong>the</strong> international Bodensee<br />

Symposium.<br />

Exemplary implementation<br />

Fistly, <strong>the</strong> museum for modern art in<br />

Salzburg (Museum der Moderne Salzburg)<br />

implemented projects on SDG 2 - zero<br />

hunger. During <strong>the</strong> project development,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y focused on nourishing an regional<br />

produce. The programme included an<br />

action day on 16th Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 2021 - official<br />

World Food Day - in cooperation with <strong>the</strong><br />

Salzburger Freilichtmuseum, a fund-raising<br />

campaign in cooperation with Caritas and<br />

a collection of home recipes as a digital<br />

reference guide for <strong>the</strong> public.<br />

The focus of <strong>the</strong>, <strong>the</strong> focus of <strong>the</strong> project<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Werner Berg Museum in Bleiburg,<br />

Carinthia was on gender equality (SDG<br />

5) through building awareness and <strong>the</strong><br />

discourse on traditional and new role<br />
