Austria's Commitment to the 2030 Agenda

Guided by the BKMC's mission to foster leadership for the Sustainable Development Goals, we have been closely collaborating with the Austrian Federal Chancellery since 2018 to advance the implementation of the SDGs in and by Austria. On the margins of the UN High-Level Political Forum 2023, we are very proud to launch the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens publication “Austria’s Commitment to the 2030 Agenda”. The publication covers national, European, and global efforts to implement the SDGs.  Against the backdrop of multiple crises, it is now more important than ever to find global solutions based on cooperation, partnership, and sustainability. Moni<strong>to</strong>ring of <strong>the</strong> <strong>2030</strong> <strong>Agenda</strong> in Austria:<br />

Supervision of <strong>the</strong> Sustainable Development<br />

Goals on a statistical level<br />

Independent moni<strong>to</strong>ring of reliable statistical<br />

performance indica<strong>to</strong>rs is necessary<br />

<strong>to</strong> indicate which goals of <strong>the</strong> <strong>2030</strong> <strong>Agenda</strong><br />

have already been successfully implemented<br />

or which areas need particular<br />

action. In Austria, Statistics Austria with<br />

its national SDG indica<strong>to</strong>rs set issued since<br />

2017 guarantees 14 , that <strong>the</strong> performance<br />

indica<strong>to</strong>rs are calculated according <strong>to</strong><br />

international standards or comply with<br />

<strong>the</strong> highest quality standards. Currently,<br />

about 200 indica<strong>to</strong>rs which are annually<br />

updated and developed are included. The<br />

creation of <strong>the</strong>se comprehensive sets, also<br />

as compared internationally, requires broad<br />

cooperation and coordination activities<br />

with o<strong>the</strong>r data owners and stakeholders.<br />

The third indica<strong>to</strong>rs report 15 of April 2023<br />

allows us <strong>to</strong> catch a glimpse of <strong>the</strong> progress<br />

Austria has made until <strong>the</strong> data year 2021 in<br />

achievement of <strong>the</strong> SDGs. At <strong>the</strong> same time,<br />

<strong>the</strong> report focuses on 126 content-related<br />

targets of which 29 are already considered<br />

as partly or entirely reached in 2021. For <strong>the</strong><br />

majority of <strong>the</strong>se targets, <strong>the</strong>re are indica<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

available whose development trends<br />

are evaluated according <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eurostat<br />

methods: if <strong>the</strong>re is a time sequence and<br />

clear normative target course, a positive or<br />

negative development is marked according<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>tal of 4 characteristics. It was<br />

possible <strong>to</strong> evaluate 83 indica<strong>to</strong>rs, no trend<br />

evaluation was possible for 37 o<strong>the</strong>r indica<strong>to</strong>rs.<br />

The development from 2010 <strong>to</strong> 2021<br />

was approx. 80% positive, almost one fifth<br />

(19.3%) of <strong>the</strong> indica<strong>to</strong>rs were evaluated as<br />

moderately or significantly negative. The<br />

report also disclosed important data gaps<br />

where no moni<strong>to</strong>ring of goal achievement<br />

was possible.<br />

<strong>the</strong> implementation of <strong>the</strong> <strong>2030</strong> <strong>Agenda</strong> and<br />
