A tall, elegant, albeit a slightly raw one, defensive
midfielder, Wieffer has shown great promise in his first
season with Feyenoord in the Eredivisie this past
season. His timing of a tackle and when to move in and
take the ball off his opponent is an ability beyond his
years (he ranks in the 98 th percentile for ball recoveries
compared to his peers) and its his use of the ball
immediately after turning the ball over is what sets him
apart from a lot of other DM’s as he uses the ball wisely
making simple 5–10-yard passes, letting others do the
more creative phase of the passing move. That being
said, overall, his offensive numbers are very good for
his usual on-field position and to dismiss him as having
less a creative influence is unwise. He can play as a leftsided
DM in a 4-2-3-1 or as a RM or a CM in a midfield
three and so he has versatility on his side as well.
The big question is this, and with all due respect, could
he make the jump from having one full season in the
Eredivisie to playing in the EPL?
