Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: We spent some time outside at Beach Plum Farm on Stevens 

Street in West Cape May. Drive slow down the dirt road which will 

guide you through the trees to their Farm Market inside the barn. Beach 

Plum is operated by Cape Resorts — the same team behind many of 

Cape May’s most popular properties like Congress Hall, The Rusty Nail, 

and The Ebbitt Room. 

The vibe: The property at Beach Plum is made up of gardens 

filled with flowers blooming, fruits and vegetables thriving and herbs 

wrapped all throughout. They are a fully operational farm so there’s 

acres of farmland in addition to the center of the property where the 

market and kitchen are located. Picnic tables are set up within the gardens 

creating a colorful natural backdrop for your dining experience. 

Chickens wander the grounds near the coops and hoop house looking 

for something to snack while the Berkshire hogs are sunbathing further 

into the grounds. If you’re looking for a true farm-to-table dining experience, 

Beach Plum Farm is the place to be. We had been talking about 

going for a couple of weeks and decided what better place for a nice 

send-off lunch for our second-year intern Emma. 

The drinks: They offer a variety of homemade beverages. From the 

selection, Emma and Courtney went for the blueberry lemonade while 

Jack, Nicole and Kayla had peach lemonade. It was perfectly sweet and 

refreshing on this hot afternoon. 

The food: It’s a farm-to-table experience so what’s on the menu 

is based on what’s in season and harvested that day. Nicole and Kayla 

enjoyed egg salad sandwiches made with green onion and Kewpie 

mayo - DELISH. Emma enjoyed a BLT while Jack and Courtney had 

the smoked chicken salad sandwich. We also couldn’t pass up the fried 

potatoes for the table made with pepper jelly — a little sweet and spicy. 

The takeaway: Beach Plum Farm’s market and farm are open Wed- 

Sun from 8am-4pm and the kitchen is open until 2pm. Check out their 

farm-to-table dinner series for seasonal experiences all year long.

Bird Droppings 

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

This time of year, it’s all about martins, 

Purple Martins, our largest swallow 

species. In late July and August, the 

birds begin gathering in pre-migratory 

roosts. The closest is along the 

banks of the Maurice River where up to half 

a million birds gather each evening after a 

day of foraging across the insect-rich skies of 

the Delaware Bayshore. Designed to snap up 

large insects in flight, flying beetles and dragonflies 

are the martin’s ideal fare. 

Found across much of the US and southern 

Canada, the birds once nested in rocky 

cliffs and abandoned woodpecker cavities 

over beaver ponds. But even before European 

colonists arrived on our shores, Native 

Americans had lured the birds into their villages 

by hanging dried and hollow gourds 

which the birds quickly converted into homesteads. 

Later, Europeans started building 

multi-chambered Purple Martin apartments. 

Innkeepers took to erecting them in front of 

their establishments, to help rid the air of the 

flies that gather wherever we do. 

But, now it is all about southbound martins 

and their morning and evening concentrations, 

so dense, they appear on weather 

radar. Appearing as a tell-tale ring, in the 

evening, birds gather in towering tornados as 

the sun sets that spiral down into the marsh 

here the birds perch on the stalks of reed grass 

until that morning when stirred by northwest 

winds, the birds set out on the great 

circle route that will via the trade winds ferry 

them to the insect-rich skies over the Amazon 

Basin where our martins will remain until 

February, when the first northbound birds 

reach Florida. Most breeding martins arrive 

no earlier than April. A late Spring may find 

returning adults unable to find flying insects 

resulting in a poor breeding year, affecting the 

number of birds gathered on the banks of the 

Maurice River. Roosting birds begin gathering 

over the town an hour before sunset and the 

steeple of the Methodist church is a popular 

resting place. Be down by the riverside park at 

sunset. The actual roost site changes year to 

year, sometimes above the bridge, sometimes 

below. The ranks of martins are augmented 

by thousands of smaller, emerald-backed Tree 

Swallows and tine-tailed Barn Swallows. The 

annual gathering is a spectacle worth savoring 

and the Citizens United for the Protection 

of the Maurice River (or CU) also hosts Purple 

Martin boat cruises. The river also hosts the 

state’s greatest concentration of nesting 

Osprey and Bald Eagles. Look for otters — 

they’re common and used to boat traffic.

This week’s movie is like that ancient 

Buddhist parable about three blind 

men describing an elephant. Their 

separate perspectives are limited 

based on touch. One feels a narrow 

trunk, another its broadside, and another its 

mammoth foot! Now imagine three different 

people trying to describe a Barbie doll. 

With millions of dollars earned so far, the 

Barbie movie is wildly successful despite heaps 

of controversy. A few countries have banned 

the movie and some wackos in the U.S. actually 

burned Barbies to protest it. Why? They 

think it’s a man-hating movie. That is truly as 

lame as it sounds. More on why that’s lame in

Still others simply aren’t sure. One mom 

asked me if her small daughters would get 

the girl-power or other complex themes. Not 

to worry! One of my favorites — three-time 

Oscar-nominated Greta Gerwig — directs so 

everyone gets it! She skillfully crafts a reimagining 

that’s playful AND deep. 

Colorful action and zany humor deliver 

The Movie Column

good vibes and laughs. On the other hand, 

the story explores being female and male, 

and the real struggles for both sexes. How 

can one movie accomplish this? Gerwig. She 

expertly weaves her vision so we all enjoy… 

and feel. Her subject matter (that is, Barbie) is 

as complicated as it is fun — naturally, a film 

adaptation needs to be both. 

The idea of Barbie, according to inventor 

Ruth Handler in 1959, was to help girls envi- 

sion their future. If that future was destined 

for high fashion and even higher privilege, 

then sure it worked. If you were a child of 

color, you had to wait until 1967 to see a Barbie 

who looked like you. Bold career Barbies came 

later, too. Until then, kids would have to see 

themselves in limited, stereotypical roles. 

You’ve got to be grateful Barbie evolved. 

Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are 

magnificent as mostly dreamy but certainly 

conflicted Barbie and Ken. The Dua Lipa song 

“Dance the Night” is my favorite current hit! 

It’s featured first in its original mix during a 

hilarious dance scene then in various adaptations 

as theme music. I’m a big fan. 

Mattel, the doll’s manufacturer, plays 

prominently in the story. For this reason, you 

wouldn’t expect it to go too far in criticizing 

franchise folklore or cultural impact. But here 

again, Gerwig subtly and surely inserts muchneeded 

reality checks to balance silliness and 

creativity. So the trailer is right — whether you 

love Barbie or hate Barbie, this movie is for 

you. Fashionable hats off to Gerwig!

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, learn some new moves 

Kenny Loggins’ 1984 hit “Footloose” is 

trendy again, thanks to a video of a 

flash mob dancing to the song near 

Vanderbilt University’s campus in 

Nashville. The song exhorts us all to 

dance away our workday blues, and in the viral 

video, you can see bystanders start tapping their 

toes to the music. It’s a very human reaction. 

Prehistoric humans did circle dancing and 

line dancing. Historians speculate the dances 

might have been religious, but they also may 

have been for courtship or entertainment. People 

were belly dancing on the Indian subcontinent 

6000 years ago. Hula dancing came to Hawaii 

with the first Polynesians, and the movements 

tell stories. The haka of the Maori people began 

as a way to show the strength of the tribe. The 

haka has evolved to celebrate — and to kick off 

the rugby matches of the All Blacks. American 

square dancing combined African, European 

and Native influences, with drums, cakewalk 

and call-and-response mingled with the reels 

from Scotland and quadrilles from France. 

Early 20th century American dancers 

learned from vaudeville, where performers like 

Harry Fox showed them the foxtrot and Bill 

“Bojangles” Robinson dazzled with tap dancing. 

After the Great War, America embraced “contortions” 

like the charleston and the shimmy, 

which could be done without a partner. Dance 

marathons kept the gentle one-step in vogue 

during the Depression, but swing dance and the 

jitterbug took over in the 1940s. In the 1970s, 

American Bandstand and Soul Train brought dance 

trends out of night clubs and into the living 

rooms, where teenagers could practice the Stroll 

and the Bump on Saturday mornings. Old-style 

MTV let us copy moves from music videos. 

Social media dances helped us connect during 

pandemic lockdowns. People learned to floss 

with their kids and copied claps and stomps from 

strangers dancing in their driveways. One of 

the most unexpected trends was the Jerusalema 

challenge with young people in Angola dancing 

to a Zulu gospel song. The upbeat tune went 

viral, famously making the leap to Ireland, where 

squads of Garda met the challenge on streets, 

rooftops, castles and beaches. 

While dancing in your living room is fun, 

try out your moves in public. Get down to 

Cape May’s Convention Hall for Dance Nights. 

Admission is free and you can learn new moves 

or just show off your own. August 9 is Latin Night 

— learn to salsa! On August 16, Kids Dancing is 

from 4 to 6pm, and Ballroom Dancing is from 

6:30- 8:30pm. Country Line Dance Night is

against our religious beliefs, it’s lunacy. She 

ignores our concerns and is now also planning 

the wedding shower around the same “star 

alignments.” She has decided to hold the 

reception at Congress Hall. I’m not sure her 

dates and their dates will “align.” Where have 

we failed? What can we say to her to bring her

My mother passed about a year ago and 

my sister and I have divided her possessions 

pretty fairly, with the exception of her china 

set. My sister thinks “pretty dishes” are 

frivolous and silly, but won’t give them to me 

because I’m a guy. I entertain and would relish 

setting the table with that china. If the china is 

being used, my mother’s memory continues. 

One day, I went to my mother’s house with the 

intent of taking them, only to find she already 

had put it in her attic — where they still sit 

languishing. We haven’t spoken since. What

CHEDDAR is a lively little guy who came to 

the shelter as a stray. It takes a little patience 

to get him to relax, but once he’s comfortable, 

he loves to be pet. He loves to walk and wander 

the yard, sniffing everything in his path. 

Cheddar needs to be with a family that understands 

his defensiveness and work with food 

resource guarding. 

BISQUICK is an eight-year-old girl who came 

to the shelter as a stray. She is quickly becoming 

a favorite of volunteers and staff. Bisquick 

is an energetic, social girl who loves to play in 

the baby pool. Her leash skills are good and 

she enjoys a walk with new smells and sights. 

This sweet girl would do well in a home with 

older children. 

LILLY is a lively 11-year-old lab mix. Her 

owner passed away and no one in the family 

could keep her. Lilly is an energetic girl who 

loves to run around the yard and play fetch. 

She walks quickly on a leash chasing down 

every scent she finds. Lilly is a sweet pup 

looking for a loving home to live out her senior 

years.

DELSEA is a beautiful 10-month-old lady who 

was taken from a very bad neighborhood. She 

had a battle with a cyst inside her cheek and 

had difficulty eating. Delsea had it removed 

and is now healthy — just trying to gain some 

weight. She is a friendly girl who would be 

good in a home with children. Contact the 

shelter about giving Delsea a better home. 

CORAL was so malnourished with nursing 

kittens when she came to the shelter. Unfortunately, 

two did not survive, but the other 

two are now healthy and happy thanks to the 

shelter staff. She is a nine-month-old girl who 

would take kindly to a warm home where she 

would be well cared for. Coral is also good with 

children and would make a lovely pet. 

ROCKY is a 16-year-old domestic short hair 

who lived between two homes as an outdoor 

cat for his entire life. He came to the shelter 

when he scratched a child bothering him and 

animal control was called. Rocky has adjusted 

well and a warm, quiet and loving home would 

be great for this kitty. He would do well in a 

home with other dogs and children.
