<strong>EAL</strong> EATS AREA BAKE SHOPS On the Rise BY ANN CIPPERLY Tall, luscious cakes, yummy fruit pies, crisp cookies or freshly baked breads can enhance a simple meal or turn an occasion into a special event. While we don’t always have the time to bake our own, numerous bakeries in East Alabama offer an assortment of scrumptious desserts from southern classics to gourmet confections, along with pastries, muffins and sourdough breads. No matter what it is, it will be made from scratch.” Carie also makes incredible cakes. Custom cakes have included a pink T-Rex, a shark, storm trooper helmet from Star Wars, among many others. “Anything we do we try to have fun with it,” she says. Custom cakes and cookies are by appointment. Along with birthday and wedding cakes with Swiss meringue buttercream, they make chocolate cakes, red velvet cakes, carrot cakes and others. The bakery is open for walk-in business. Space is available to enjoy a cup of coffee and freshly baked pastries and desserts. Among the cookies available for walkin, pick-up include, chocolate chip cookies, funfetti cookies, cosmic brownie cookies, snickerdoodle cookies, an assortment of shortbread cookies, six different flavors of macarons daily, five different flavors of cake pops, cheesecake cookie bars and decorated sugar cookies. Fresh bread Fridays will return this fall as well as chocolate croissants and ham and Swiss croissants. Seasonal treats will also be created. Carie offers daily coffee specials. The bakery also has treat boxes for dogs. The bakery food truck will be at home football games. 54 EAST ALABAMA LIVING
Wild Flour Bakery 1015 Mayberry, Waverly Tues.-Fri. 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. & Sat. 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. 334.755.6513 • Wfbakeryllc@gmail.com www.facebook.com/wildflour.microbakery Located on Mayberry Street in the small town of Waverly, Wild Flour Bakery prepares a wide range of baked goods, including cheesecakes, flourless chocolate cakes, tiramisu, assorted pastries, cookies, muffins, sourdough bread, gluten free desserts and many others. A selection of coffees and teas, breakfast pastries and two lunch dishes are also served. When owner Sarah Jones was growing up in Gig Harbor, Wash., her mother worked long hours, and she was mentored by two ladies from her church, who enjoyed baking. Sarah was 8 years old when the ladies taught her how to use a rubber spatula and prepare a variety of items, which fostered her love of baking. After Sarah met her husband Howard, who was in the military, she began baking and cooking more. When their two children were born, they decided to move and have more space. At first, they moved to Montgomery and lived there two months, then found a home in Reeltown. A neighbor asked Sarah to bake muffins for her. Since she had some muffins left over, Sarah posted them on Facebook, saying they were for sale. The people who purchased them said if she baked them again, they would buy them. She began baking muffins every week and meeting buyers at the school for pickup. That was how her selling of baking items began. Sarah was working at a coffee shop in Tallassee when she met Corrie Sid, the owner of Grove Station. Corrie asked her to come to work at her business. Sarah and Howard opened their bakery, Wild Flour, inside Grove Station and also baked for two coffee shops. They were growing so quickly that they needed more space. Scott and Amy Peek approached them about space they had available at Standard Deluxe in Waverly. Sarah and Howard found the space appealing, with the walls covered in posters of entertainers who had played at Standard Deluxe. A baking space was added to the café. Wild Flour moved April 4, <strong>2023</strong>, one year exactly after opening at Grove Station. Sarah and her staff also bake for eight other shops with small to large orders from Opelika to Montgomery. Howard manages the coffee side of the business. They serve Toomers Coffee and Thankfully Coffee, two local brands. They serve a variety of European style coffee drinks and offer tea. Along with desserts and breads, two lunch choices are offered, generally sandwiches made with homemade bread. Sarah is planning on making soup for lunch during the fall to serve with sourdough bread or a fresh baguette. Their children, Hannah, 14, Caleb, 11, have an interest in learning the business. Hannah will work in front at the bakery. Sarah is looking forward to the holidays and the special desserts she will be baking. She posts photos of freshly baked items and the lunch menu daily on their Facebook page. “We have been encouraged by the outpouring of support,” Sarah says, “and we look forward to growing.” “It has always been a dream of ours to have our own business,” adds Howard. “It has been good to have our kids here. It has been an old school business where we have our kids here doing school and working the business. We are all doing the work.
