Watercolorist Clint Herring captures Southern scenes in figurative and architectural realism, blending shadows and light while emitting raw emotion. The East Alabama native’s work has been featured throughout the United States, but his barefoot childhood pulls him South. Clint recently embarked on an ambitious artistic journey exploring Delta Blues musicians in a new book set for a 2023 completion. Copyright 2023 Clint Herring Copyright 2023 Clint Herring “This casebound book will be nearly 300 pages and will feature over 70 portraits and conceptual works,” says Clint. “These paintings are of bluesmen of notoriety, legends of the past and various blues icons that have greatly been influenced by the blues from the Delta of Mississippi.” Clint grew up in a country setting in the Dixie Community, located near Marvyn. His paternal grandfather, who was a farmer, lived next door, and his mother’s family were all farmers. “I grew up in a lot of dirt,” he says, remembering childhood days. He also sketched pictures a great deal at an early age, with many based on his mother’s stories. “I can remember in the first-grade drawing Rudolph with ornaments hanging off his antlers at Christmas,” Clint says. “The kids in the class wanted me to draw one for them. I told them I would for a quarter. Those were my first art sales.” EAST ALABAMA LIVING 77
