progressed to working from photographs
as reference material; mostly his own or
an amalgamation of collected sources that
would inspire original interpretations.
Clint painted mostly architectural structures,
such as old barns, houses, churches,
old country stores and other rural scenes.
He admired art by Andrew Wyeth and
Stephen Scott Young, who was doing figurative
painting of children in the Bahamas.
He ventured out to find people to paint,
especially people of color, but they often
didn’t want their picture taken by someone
they didn’t know. After talking to Stephen
Scott Young, Clint made a trip to Harbor
Island in the Bahamas. Architectural structures
on the island were much like the
South with white picket fences and clapboard
houses.
“I fell in love with Harbor Island and the
people,” he says. “I took a lot of photos of
the structures and people.”
Along with painting country scenes
locally, in the Bahamas, and Texas Hill
Country, he also painted historic houses
in Charleston, S.C., for the Charleston
Renaissance Gallery, owned by Robert
Hicklin, who is writing the introduction
