When Ann Archer was a sophomore in
college and suddenly sent home during the
pandemic, she had so much time on her
hands that she decided to start baking. She
added photos of her baking to Instagram.
After someone asked her if she sold the
cakes, she decided, “Why not?” She began
to get orders.
Last year, Ann moved back to Auburn
after graduating from Ole Miss and taught
kindergarten. She continued baking and
has enjoyed having cookie and cake classes
with children.
“I love being in the kitchen and in my
apron,” Ann says, “so I decided to go ahead
first and open up my bakeshop and party
store, Everything Sweet, in late July. Some
of my most popular items are my Annabelle
cake, a secret family recipe that is a light
and fluffy pound cake with a cinnamon
swirl in the middle, sugar cookies that I
paint to be custom for any occasion, and my
favorite, my strawberry cake.
“I am so grateful for the opportunity to
bring life to celebrations and celebrations
to life,” Ann adds. “I believe every day is a
gift and should be celebrated as one!”
Melissa Dorman Baysinger and Derek Land, who
both grew up in Lee County, opened their online
cottage business, Jewel Green Baking Company,
in November last year. While Melissa handles the
baking, Derek manages the business side.
The baking company offers a variety of baked
goods, including their seasonal cookie trays with
a variety mix and cookie decorating kits that children
will enjoy. They are also continuing to expand
their custom cake business in order to offer birthday
cakes, groom cakes, graduation cakes and
more.
This fall they will be offering a variety of baked
goods perfect for get-togethers with family. “We
will be offering a variety of pies and breads,” Derek
says. “Some flavors we will be offering are pecan
pie, apple pie, pumpkin spice swirl loaf, cinnamon
coffee cake, and other classic fall flavors.”
They also offer Wayne’s buttermilk pie that
they are naming after a local veteran. Derek and
Melissa want to donate 100 percent of sales of this
pie to a local veteran’s organization as their way of
giving back to the community.
When they are not working at their cottage business,
they are busy with private chef and catered
events.
They require at least 48 hours for orders.
